  • I have just watched this film and it absolutely blew me away, the scene when Ricky explains about the bag for the first time is astonishing. The only music that could have gone with that section is that of Thomas Newman, flawless simplistic beauty.

  • I usually listen to this when I have to make an important decision. It's calming and heartbreaking and just shows the painful beauty of life. I saw this movie ages ago and never understood it,but when I saw it again couple of months ago... Made me think about changing some things in my life.

  • I love how there is so much feeling and I feel some sort of emotional communion that comes out in Thomas Newman's music. He takes the time to pull the listener into the melody and imo really attempts to communicate something to the listener.

I agree with you 100% regarding Danny Elfman. his scores for the movies Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Darkman, Pee Wee's Great Adventure, Beetlejuice .....and on & on. I probably have more CDs from him than any other composer. I can't believe I didn't have him high on that short list. thanks for reminding me.

  • @avianskies101 Well, I don't disagree with you that Newman deserves an Oscar. But I don't think that should detract from Reznor's award. I think he fully deserved the award he got, but I understand people disagree with me there. I agree with you completely, Thomas deserves an Oscar. But that shouldn't cause people to belittle the accomplishments of another, equally respectable (though very different) artist. But that's just my opinion, I get what you're saying too.

  • It was over a year ago I posted a comment that seemed to touch many viewers. It was a time in my life I was troubled & uncertain about so many things and very little made any sense. I also didn't know there were so many lost or wayward souls out there. but in your empathy and this.(i have no words appropriate for Newman's music) got me through that time of turmoil. I don't know what waits for me in the near future or for that matter, for any of us. But i vow to "pay it forward" & help another<3

  • @305991523 My favorite composer is Thomas Newman; "Road To Perdition" is one of the greatest scores in cinema history. But my favorite score is "Lord of the Rings" by Howard Shore. I don't think that score will ever be equaled. Thanks for sharing your favorites; I would heartily agree that those are the best composers ever.

It's like everything comes alive, and you are overcome with purpose and beauty. Staring into space and simply breathing becomes the most satisfying feeling in the entire world.

  • @faithlesspr try two other Thomas Newman music / scores. from 'Meet Joe Black' three tunes: "That Next Place"

    "Whisper of a Thrill" & 'Somebody Else.' from "Road To Perdition" play 'The Main Title Theme.' Many people, other than myself fell the 10 minute play of "That Next Place" is the best musical creation written for any movie score that Newman has ever created. see what you think. i'd be interested to know.

  • @jpjordan90 I have heard all of 'Angels in America' and I agree with you that Newman is a genius.my top four music score / composers are: Thomas Newman - Hans Zimmer - Howard Shore & James Horner. close faves not listed: John Williams - James Newton Howard - Brian Tyler & Alan Silvestri. I'm curious to know what you and the other listeners choose as their faves.

  • @305991523 James Newton Howard is one of my favourites, a fateful meeting from king kong is one of my top tracks ever, and central park. i think Horner is talented too and Zimmer's CV is packed full of good scores, but Thomas Newman is really just something else. Alexandre Desplat is on the list too

  • @305991523 I agree; Thomas Newman is the best. Hans Zimmer is a fair second. I personally like Danny Elfman's work a lot, more than that of James Horner (just a lot of big strings). John Williams goes without saying, though somehow he lacks the delicacy and artistry of Newman. This score is so much about atmosphere and empty space, while Williams is the all time king of melody.

    James Horner is my all time favorite composer. The man is a fucking legend. I'm not a big John Williams fan, as I feel his scores are a little too loud or overdramatic.

  • This film is a film about humanity, about the beauty and interconnections of the human psyche between different people. Newman might not be Schubert, but this score is so beautiful, so simply inspiring, so manipulating emotionally. It moves your conscience. To the context of the movie, it is a beautiful accompaniment and it serves to provide the moral of the film, which is to explore the depths of humanity. The music creates the beauty.

  • sustains, parallel fifths, and harmonic transitions between minor 1 and major 4. 'profound'?- i would say masterfully written, quite pretty- but this is not a masterWORK. Go listen to Schubert, guys.

  • @chazzithebrit It isnt about being a masterwork, its about the conscience investment by Thomas Newman to bring out the affect in the film so that you not only view it but you feel it aswell

  • @roachie888 I would agree- Newman writes the score well . He is clearly masterful, using this metaphorical 'language' of semantics perceptively in conjunction with the screenplay- but I disagree with the sentiment (the one evoked within the sincere comments below) that this is 'innately' profound: that assertion vaguely fits conventional definitions (derived from the 19th century) of 'masterworks', such as the symphonies of Beethoven or Mozart. This is accessible, pretty- but not profound

  • @chazzithebrit Well that is true, and in that respect I totally concure, accessible and pretty are probably very good descriptions for this song, but with the evolution of music and the other art forms it accompanies, couldnt you say that it still can be a masterwork, that it can be profound. I do not remember what part of the film this music accompanies, but with the image and the music joined, dont they become compoundly profound?

  • @roachie888 i do not think think film is profound, I think its charming, but I also think its pretentious, especially the ending. By modern day definition- maybe it can be 'profound', but only on the most superficial level. Many, many people can write music of this kind.

  • some reason depressing toned music always cheers me up, I feel a personal connection to this song,. something hits me everytime I hear it, I'm still trying to figure out what makes me get so worked up when I hear it. I often think of my childhood and growing up and how I got where I am.

  • A masterpiece; it's not only soft as cotton, is like with every single sound at every single second I could feel the music rubbing my cheek passing down through my throat to reach my heart, and then it dances around it. I feel like shedding tears at time while listening, because it reminds me how beautiful thins are on the world and how hard is to see it.
