I think the cgi was although not needed, it worked better than most cgi movies. He doesn't move too freely like most cgi characters, and the only problem with it is that he seems too perfect. But when the character is perfect, then where is the problem.

It was all CGI, however it was all based on something real.

The face was Billy Crudup's face and the body was made from a scan from a celebrity health instructor.

So they basically used CGI to fix the actor's head onto the body model's body and then the skin texture was built in the computer.
