Where is it's armor beside the basic armor? These have no slat armor, no reactive armor and not even smoke launchers. It also uses steel and ceramics which can be penetrated by any anti-tank weapon made from 1980 and up. So it was designed in 1976 and made in 1989, they should be upgrading it. Even the Leopard 2 is on its 5th upgrade.

you forgot to mention the Leopard2A1-4. The Type 90 of Japan clearly used the Leopard2 original turret as inspiration but is a bit weaker in terms of armor at the front and the back. However, the Type 90 uses an advanced autoloader to fire almost 15 shots per minute and weights 8 tons less than the Leopard2A1-4. Also, its height can be configurated.

The thing about the HJ8, well that's a Chinese made missile. Lots of people test their own missiles on their own tanks, so it doesn't say anything. The US Army tests all it's anti tank weapons against the M1A2 Abrams and the Heer (German Army) tests their missiles against their own Leopard 2s. That's not a very accurate claim for armor. Also there are many other tanks that can fire ATGMs, but it does not have better submerging capabilities then Leopard 2A6 or K2 Black Panther.

not sure wether the Merkava Mk4 has the best armor, but it's turret design is indeed a very good design to prevent direct-hits and so lower chance of penetration. But the Merkava Mk4 also weights too much at 65 tons! It could not traverse through soft terrain well and definetly a No-Go on many bridges. The heavier a tank, the worse it can be transported on trains and trucks too. That's why tanks like the K-2, Type 10 and Type99 are going to the new trend. All prevent to aproach the 60 tons mark.

Me neither, although the Type 99 and its newer variants sure are among the top ten MBTs now. The Type 99 has very good defensive capabilties and also high mobilty, but lacks in an bustle autoloader. Would be nice if newer variants include an autoloader that could fire at least 12 shots per minute instead of using the Russian style caroussel system that only fires 8 shots. But at least the gun has proven to be powerful and accurate enough.
