Radon gas is formed when nuclear material ( such as uranium) decomposes now it's very possible that there is some uranium mixed in with the counter top. Now unless they were using methods to purify the uranium in there counter top it wouldn't be a big threat. Or if they were eating yes i mean consuming the granite in there counter top ( because uranium and depleted uranium are very poisonous not because of radiation) they wouldn't be In much risk unless they were using their counter tops as
long term food storage where uranium could leach into their food and kill them.Like that ex-kgb agent a few years back That was more than likely purposefull, but again the radiation wouln't be the issue it would be a poisoning issue and you would die in hours, not get cancer. Unless the material was givin in small amounts and stayed in your liver until enough built up and dislodged. Then it would occur over a period of time but you would still die in hours.
thats possible granite is a common house hold upgrade but it is impossible for granite to hold radon or radiation sorry it was proved by the marble instatue of america
the fact that it is the marble institute proves its biased... a prestigious chemist at the university of Nottingham even said granite gives off radon. google periodic videos and select radon under the Nottingham sight
i work in granite shop. i know the difference when u cut the plastic garbage smells like pure cancer to me . granite dont make this odor .all u get from granite dust is small particles which clog your lungs = black lung . thath is it. if u wear a dust mask it wont get tghrouth , but the gas mask is no help when u work whith plastic .
ask any fireman .when they go to any factory that makes pvc or any kind f plastic. when it burns it makes toxic vapor. same smell when u cut quartz , silestone, or any other man made stuff. what it is they put stone gravel and mix it whit glue.
If there were no merit to this the issue would have been cleared up years ago. Correct me if I'm wrong, but we did not have the technology to test for Radon levels a few hundred years ago- or when the pyramids were built. If you granite people are so confident your product is safe, why are you so defensive about it?
You're totally right, this stuff is all a marketing ploy... that's why the New York Times ran a story on it... and the Today Show. It goes without saying that every story THOSE news organizations run has pretty much no basis in fact.
Silestone, the rascals behind all this false baloney, have used such a shallow marketing ploy to gain market share, its back firing. Granite is used in every significant construction -Pyramids to every known historical or modern time structure to our homes, and these quartz surface cos. like SLIMEBALLS...I mean Silestone, are trying to say what takes 3 million years to make by God,Granite,is not good and their crap made in 3 days with dust, powder, glue and some kaka is good.Get a life Slimeballs!!!
This has nothing to do with Americans freaking out. This is a marketing tactic by 2 companies to gain market share for their engineered stone and their "clean" granite. The same "clean" granite already being sold. Sealing granite to produce elevated levels of radon is inaccurate. Is anyone's home sealed? Is there not ventilation? Is there also not natural radon from soil gas? why yes, yes there is.
This is an effort to market, nothing more. And it's pretty crappy tactics.
BuildClean is funded by Cambria who is a manufacturer of engineered stone- the competition of natural stone. They tried this same thing about 10 years ago and it failed miserably when some actual "real" experts found that their was no basis to the scare. Its nothing more than a marketing scheme to try to scare people into buying engineered stone rather than natural stone.
what about people who cut granite can they die from radiation

Sounds like a bunch of granite shop owners whining cause they got caught selling hazardous materials.
Looks like we have a University professor and a prety expensive geiger counter saying this is a real concern.
Why would anyone try to prevent people from testing their countertops? To prevent being sued?
How about the families that live in these homes? Are your profits more important than lives here?
