I think I will give this oyakodon a try when I go to Japan, I am planning to someday (maybe in a lot of time) go to Japan for vacation or university, I wish Japan was the n. 1 nation of the world, and not United States, so everyone could speak their cool language.
I could be mistaken, but I do remember once getting a crash course on Portuguese culture when I read that their word of thanks is "Origato." Knowing that the Japanese language did get a lot of influence from the Portuguese missionaries and explorers, I thought, "Could this be the origin?
It's not origato in portuguese. It's obrigado. The formal way of saying thank you is agradecido. In brazil they use obrigado as well.
Of course, when contries have close relations with one another they influence each other. The japanese got the word igirisu (english-ingles), tabako (tabaco) manto (cloak - manto), kappa (raincoat-capa), kandeya (oil lamp-candeia), furasuko (flask-frasco) and so on. But arigatou has been used well before Japanese had any contact with Portugal.
Nevertheless, I gotta hand it to ya. There are probably not to many people that would notice a similarity or even wonder about the origin and connections.
No problem. Languages fascinate me and since I'm learning so many languages I try to find similarities between words and possible influences, original meaning and so I had already checked on obrigado and arigatou. If you're interested you can go to japanesepod101 and find "Learn Japanese Word Orgins 8" with the word arigatou. It has an interesting story behind it. I was going to explain it but Hiroko's video is better.
Linguists have noticed the similarities between the word "arigatou" in Japanese and "obrigado" in Portuguese, but apparently it is only a coincidence that they sound the same :)
Hiroko is my favorite sensei. She has actually done a utube video on oyakodon months ago on her "Hirokochannel" Japanesepod101 does great work with these videos. Thanks guys.
these videos are just AWESOME! more educational then some of the stuff you get in class, I mean, the examples you give and explanation of kanji is great

Thanks for the clear up. I pay attention to similarities and connections to words so I know what I'm really saying.

I am a little new to learning Japanese. But I have noticed some small things that I want to ask about.
I have noticed that many characters in Katakana are based on Kanji or Hiragana. like 八 (8 in Kanji) and ハ (ha in Katakana).
So I am not wrong in thinking that a lot of Katakana's etymology is from Kanji, right?

how is the egg done??
adotbyss 2 years ago
In most oyakodon, the egg is not thoroughly cooked, so it's still a little runny. If you get a chance, you should try it! :)
