  • Cool shit, homeboy.

  • Marty Still the Main Man love your teaching.

  • awesome !!!, nice lesson

  • "duh guh duh guh buh duh"lmao

  • Hey Marty, nice job.... I am in a rut and this will help!

  • Getting my daily dose of Marty In the Morning..... whew. Hey Marty, what kind of guitar you playing in this video?

  • @tundragyr A 535 semi-hollow by Heritage, of Kalamazoo MI. Similar to the 335 by Gibson.

  • @vinorama

Perhaps some people see more in it than simply playing a guitar in standard tuning. There are many other new tunings to learn about and you can slowly hear more and experience expansion :0)

  • priceless! THANKS!

  • my guitar is open g but with a g in the bass. try this if your guitar can handle it (.56 gauge strings help too) G,D,G,D,Gb,B

  • Why spend all that time on the actual tuning of the guitar?

  • Hey Marty, so if you play satisfaction for excample you still play it on the string that used to be the A string?:)

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR,Marty:))))

  • nice guitar brah

  • He looks like Dan Aykroyd - The blues brothers, but no glasses. lol

Great job, man! Tks \º/ Yeahhhhh

  • Open G tuning.... I wish I had known about this 20 years ago.

  • Great video man... thanks

  • Awesome Marty, thanks!!!

  • "The stAONes!" gotta love Marty

  • honestly hands down the best guitar lesson's out there, i try by my self and if i really cant figure out something or want to learn something different i go to you lol and then i get. thanks Marty

  • I used to tune in Open G but then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • Ogh! Beautiful!

  • he looks like La Bamba from the Conan O Brian show lol

  • Check "Rosetta West - Underground" for some cool open G slide guitar.

  • Why can't someone just get to the point straight away in these vids nstead of giving us a history lesson first?

  • Great beginner lesson. I've known so many good guitar players that get spooked by open and alternate tunings and they have no idea of the freedom that can be achieved with different tunings. The Stones in G, Van Halen in D, to modern bands like Meshuggah in double drop D, the songs practically play themselves. On another note, who wants to take odds on whether or not ol' Marty's got very little hair underneath that hat?

  • Read Keith Richards book. He learned about Open G tuning from one of the Everly brothers.

  • @GusBlues1006 Keith Richards is a known liar.

  • Marty!

  • eugene from flight of the conchords!

  • Love open G. Laura Marling makes it sound way beautiful!

  • Everything in open G sounds like the Rolling stones? What?!

    No.

  • i never heard mart say shit in a video before he must of been excired at 5:52

  • B note is H note in eastern part of europe. but there's also a B which denotes the Bb note. so B=H and Bb=B

no musical professor I came across in my life doesn't have an explanation why is that so and why would it be convenient in any way.

  • Stuff Keith Richards, I just sussed this is the tuning used by Jimmy Page in Led Zeppelins Bron y Aur stomp. COOL!

  • rockongoodpeople:

I have been playing guitar for 30 plus years and believe it or not I have never tuned my guitars to OPEN-G TUNING! I literally couldn't stop playing the hammer on KEITH RICHARDS chords after I tuned my guitar tonight! Their are some great alternate chords that can be found in OPEN G tuning! THANKS A BUNCH! GREAT FUN!!!

  • Incredible man...really a great lesson...from a great dude!

  • the hat sucks

  • jew

  • @respect43 guess that makes you a Nazi.........

  • brown sugar

  • the stAONes!!!!

  • Marty GET ON WITH IT MAN, U took 2mins before U stopped rabbiting, maybe I am inpatient, but 10secs of talking and strait into the action is better, or talk wile U play man

  • thanks Mardi , you do great JOB !!!

  • 666 videos

  • what H is B in german he said? thats not quiet right

  • @BOTiTTE hes right

  • rather than take the 6th string off some bands tune G-G-D-G-B-D. and the doubled low G apparently gives the guitar a bass frequency. eagles of death metal do it

  • This is good natured, chatty and informative better than some other instructional vids where pomposity or suppressed ego is colouring the fun part of lick and chop learning....lick your chops man!

  • Marty, you do a great job and damn nice to see you on a Heritage mate...I am the distributor all the way down here in New Zealand. They (Heritage) are the biggest secret in the guitar world...they are magical. Keep up the cool vids!

  • You forgot to mention that keith takes the low E string off and plays it as a 5 string guitar. Because playing ther low E over the A turned G string is open G/D lower octave. And it doesn't really sound good. Most open Gplayers don't play the low D string. Keith has the sense to just take the whole string off. The man with 5 strings and 9 lives

    Still a great lesson Marty!

  • thanks

  • good job, Marty!

  • My favorite tune...Open G

  • Lots of chat up front but cool stuff

  • 30 seconds of instruction - 10 and a half minutes of shootin the bull. Can't people just get on with things without all the filler crap?

  • thanks marty i will try it rate me

  • MARTY!!

  • good stuff

  • dude you are going to heaven for sure, thanks

  • what kind of guitar is that? beautiful

  • @dmoor10 a Heritage one. very cool guitar by the way

  • @dmoor10 Sears autoplay

  • Marty Did'nt KR use only five strings. What did he drop? Vernon

  • DigaDigaDigaBuga.

  • YES! I watched like 6 other videos and didnt get it, until marty explained it.

  • What guitar is that Marty? Thx

  • take off the top string thats what keith richards does

  • Great as always Marty, thanks.

  • easy to remember: "I'm keith richards and i really digga digga Buddha" dgdgbd :)

  • marttty !! ur the shit man!! thx

  • I have a neurological condition that rendered my hands useless in regards to pressing the strings to the fret board. I played guitar and mandolin for 40 yrs. I was saddened that I could no longer play music. THEN, I bought a resonator guitar and discovered a whole new world in slide guitar and open "G" tuning. Thanks for the tips. Check out my Youtube video, Rodger Markham "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" By Bob Dylan. Thanks

  • dug uh dug uh buh duh

  • Great help Marty & fun to watch! Thanks You. Love ROGP channel!

  • Marty, you're a stone genius

Thanks mate... having stacks of fun with this one

  • @MrV1C7OR Nope, whatever guage you're using will work.

  • @MrV1C7OR Medium gauge works well for me, but I don't know if you need new strings

  • Comment removed

  • @MrV1C7OR Thicker gauge strings are recommended (11 or 12's), but if you have a medium or high action, you should be fine. If I play slide guitar, I use a Telecaster with 11's.

  • @MrV1C7OR no

  • @MrV1C7OR no

  • I switched to open G just before watching this video, just for something to do. I think I'm gonna have it be my main tuning from now on, I love the variety I get out of it.

  • @Deanbass77 same exact thing i just did

  • When Marty tried pronoucing the tuning, I did the same thing. At the same time we were both like dugadugaduga. Ha

  • Good stuff, Finally found someone who makes sense doing this on the internet, I am sure it is not easy todo. As far as the negative idiots per their comments, go cry to your mama, she doesn't give a shit either.

    Thanks Marty

  • Dig it man! Your rhythm sense is compelling. It made me want to just bang out those laid back open chords, like the drummer that actually am.. Then as I listened/played/thought about it, that's what makes Sir Keith such a great player. It's not just his melodies, it's his sense of timing and rhythm that moves the tunes. I've finally found a way of playing Guitar that makes sense for a drummer. I'm going to need to revisit all of my Stones albums with my new ears.

  • marty has both talent and fun, not a commen thing

  • i just fucking broke my guitar string trying to tune to a the first way you had it cuz it sounded beautiful and then i realized.. it's probably the guitar itself . so .. fuck youuu for making me break my damn guitar string . but thank you for the video . . and lesson ..

    you FUCK . :)

  • @wadafuxup351 How did you break the string loosening it? Retard. Have your mom make sure you have you pudgy little fingers on the right tuning key knob.

  • @borntoraisehogs you wanna know what's funny ? if you knew me i wouldn't be the one being called fat at all . and i broke it cuz i then realized his guitar in the video murders my guitar cuz, clearly they sound different . and if you're the one to talk about fat, try changin you screen name. since you were born to raise hogs . i bet you can't even wipe your ass right fatty. FIND YOUR PENIS !! ONE DOLLAR! lol, i'd prolly end up beating the shit outta you anyways :p
  • what are you doing at about 9:10 ,when you go down the neck hitting a few notes with dead sound

    thanks

  • its really creepy when he looks into the camera while he plays.

  • Nice Job Dude! . . . that was Great!

  • does anyone else think he looks like he'd make a good muppet?

  • Picked up "Brown Sugar" in about 2 min. with this tuning. Start me up took about another minute. Definitely dead on!

    Rock On Marty!

  • hahaha 2:05

  • Cheers m8y, your expertise is much appreciated. Big luv on ya

  • thanks marty,,,,you saved my life time over time with all the info you give,,,,you keep me alive ,,thanks

  • lol: diga diga diga buhduh

  • If you read Keith's book he talk a lot about how and when he discovered open tuning and how it affected his writing. It was like an epiphany for him and all these song came out... For a guitar guy it all made sense but for someone who doesn't play it wouldn't mean anything. Like theguitarguymike says, he only had 5 string on his guitar when he did all this writing. That comes from "banjo" tuning and all the blues he like to listen to in the 60s. Interesting read...

  • @mpoirier2323 Hi. I had been trying to sound like Keith Richard for 30 years until I read his incredible book.

Once i Got the secret its really easy. Most of his riffs are in this tuning apart from Gimme Shelter which is in open E.

  • @mpoirier2323 Keith Richards did not "discover" open tuning. He was taught it by Ry Cooder.

  • @toddster20 He used it for slide playing though. Keith came up with most of those chord shapes himself. He basically had to teach himself guitar again.

  • @mpoirier2323 I meant how he became aware of it, not invented it. Never implied that was the case... Christopher Columbus discovered America, he didn't invent it, even though it was there all along, ask the Norse who came here 600 years before CC...

  • @mpoirier2323 he once also said that playing an orthodox lead parts isn't a thing for him. he always emphasised using two guitars in pairs and making more of a solo riff than shredding, licking and excessively bending anything. this is probably something that completely defined rolling stones. and you know what anything you hear from rolling stones you're just somehow not bothered by the fact that their music does not incorporate traditional rock solos

  • thank you thank you thank you i have been tryting to learn how to tune an open G and you made it so easy for me to pick it up WOW now i can try to play those richie havens music with his tumbs instead of holding to many bar chords which hurt my hands i think any ideas out there for me to improve?

  • Jumpin' Jack Flash is in open E. He also uses a capo,a lot, which is why you often see him with his left had and arm away from the guitar.

  • Sometimes he plays on the D,G, and B strings like he does in open G, in standard tuning (because those strings aren't changed in open G) and then plays on the other strings that are standard. See "Monkey Man".

  • Nice Marty....Seem Like a Good Dude.

  • I'd bring the top low E up to a G as well, more like Keith.

  • @Mojolightnin thats keith's "signiture" tuning. The Stones r very known for there wild tunings in songs.

  • @theguitarguymike Yeah, I know. Keith usually has only 5 strings on hid guitar when he's in open G, no top E string. So I don't have to remove a string, I just bring the top low E string up to a G as well.

  • @Mojolightnin ooo i didnt no he only uses 5 strings. well i think in the vid start me up hes got a six string...cause it does a close up of him

  • @Mojolightnin In the vid he's probably not even really playing. His Teles and open G guitars have 5 strings.

  • Hi Marty Great videos you have tought me alot. I have taken off 2 strings and tuned my guitar to open G. Check out my LInk and see my version of Honky tonk woman

Let me know what you think. Thanks

  • very cool thanks for the lesson

  • That;s correct, but his stageguitars have only five strings. He doesn't bother with six strings anymore

  • Keith plays a five string open G, not six

  • @Gsiem1 just don`t play the top string. And also, in some rare cases, he did play that top string like in "Tumbling Dice"

  • love your lessons great shit.

  • good job!

  • DiG DuG BuD how bout that? =P

  • what happens if you tune so that every time you bar it's a minor chord? what would the tuning be called, and what can you do with it?

  • @shukijo69 Just tune your B string to an A. I don't know if there's a name for it, but I call it G minor. Simple and easy way to switch from major to minor keys between songs, you can even do it while playing gigs!

  • Thanks Marty! Great tip. I really appreciate the post. Rock on!

  • digadigabid

  • ....well ..... I guess I can teach you much better .... hahahahaha ... you don't have the correct set up ... 5 strings / 2 fingers / 1 hassle ... Keith Richards

  • ....well ..... I guess I can teach you much better .... hahahahaha ... you don't have the correct set up ... 5 strings / 2 fingers / 1 hassle ... Keith Richards

  • Thanks man - that was great!

  • I started laughing hard when you went into the Stones vibe. You got your point across very well. Great job!

  • thanks man i just got it!

  • i discovered this as well ,but i wanted to keep it a secret,aw shucks!!

  • well, i didnt get the "h-chord" joke :D (i'm german )^^

  • @HulZor It's an old tradition for german composers to use H-chords. An h-chord is an B chord. But the German B-chord is a B flat chord if i remember correctly.

  • super guitar.

  • martyyy love the stoness all my lifee thankss so muchh;)

  • Thanks!!!!

  • Don't quit your day job.

  • Thank you much!

  • this guy is soooo annoying

  • @gingerleyham three words. Go fuck yourself.

  • Shush virgin

  • @Visualbreakdown I'm with you. I have no idea how somebody could find Marty annoying. He is the king!

  • @gingerleyham You should not even have access to youtube. This guy is a genius and has helped thousands and thousands of people learn the guitar. Please do not darken this channel with your presence any more. Marty is a music and teaching god.

  • @MrRockmeister1 ok I will do everything you say because I am impossibly threatend

  • H is B in German...what particular dialect of German pronounces their 'B's' as 'H'? you suck

  • @mrburnett bro, the musical notation for b is called h in germany because they call a# b instead, which is pretty confusing. so, forexample c-major scale is written like c, d, e, f, g, a, h. he doesnt suck.

  • @mrburnett H is B in German. They don't pronounce is as H.

  • He actually takes the low E off, making G the lowest note. But, not necessary for open G tuning, which this was ultimately about.

  • Keith plays actually with five strings he takes the high e off his guitar.

  • Sister Luck.

  • stoooooonwes haha

  • First of all I want to thank you for that bit of info MArty.

It does work. However, I don;t see it as an open "G" .

The High E you don;t play very often, I suppose.

    Interesting. though.

SOrry just saw you lowered the high e to do also.

AH now I know why Keith can;t play leads.
