Notice how there is a fairground ride in the studio (?). You see it from 2.14 onwards. That must have been so weird to be performing with that thing going round just a few feet away. Notice also how Edge was showing no signs of his later baldness. Dave has a full head of hair at this time in his life!
This is so badly mixed. I'd kill the sound guyhere. It's ok to make the sound sound punchier with more bass and bass drum. But wtf, you can barely listen to Bono.
I have a few bootlegs from back in the day where they actually do play THBAO, but, for some reason, it never quite sounds as good as the studio version.
Which is weird because U2 almost always sounds better live than on record.
TOTP always required a taped performance, period. As far as I know, U2 rerecorded Two Hearts at the TOTP studios for this "performance", then mimed to it. I've seen a couple bands not even try to mime to the prerecorded track, which is hilarious and just plain awesome.
Great performance, although if memory serves me correctly, after their appearance on this particular show, Two Hearts' sales actually went down, causing U2 to decline further appearances on the show, citing their fans' being the type of people not caring much about what's on Top of the Pops.
I remember watching this or something like it around that time and remember saying to myself, "OMG Who are these guys! They are freaking awesome." At the ripe age of 13, U2 had captured my heart and still do to this day. Even 26 years later, they are still my favorite band. Seeing that it is my birthday today, Rock on Bono!!!!
Jesus. None of them were older than what, 23, when this was taped? Unbelievable. People forget what an amazing live band they were/are. I loved this period, back when they seemed desperate to get your attention, like whatever gig they were playing was the last gig they would ever play...like their lives depended on it.
"Let's Twist Again"! A Hit in the sixties and eighties I think for Chubby Checker. Bono often sang it during gigs at the time getting the audience to sing a long as well...
Probably the greatest U2 song ever...it has all the elements...driving drums, soaring vocals, scorching guitar riff and the best bass lines I've ever heard.
i dont want to compare any band to another but to me U2 and the Beattles are the best bands that have ever existed! i mean there words are so deep and poetic unlike other bands that have been around.
to finish off the sentence at the end- in the world...

@phewsonfreak it's weird but you're right. this isn't even the studio version, but the vocals are somehow recorded before?

I love that U2 refused to lipsync on TOTP. That would have sucked.

Amen to that! I would have rather heard them play this than "Unforgettable Fire" at Giants Stadium.
By the way, does anybody know if they used a tape for this or performed it live?
