good luck learning how to read and write! theres over 12 vowels haha..best thing to learn would probably be picking up some karaoke's and a thai english dictionary. or just living in thailand for a year!

Just curious, would living in Thailand for a year actually work? I here that it works for most languages. My cousin went to Quebec for a year and came back fluent, my sister to Mexico, and my friend did the same thing with Germany. My goal was Thailand. I am already fluent in Thai-Dam (I am Lao, not Thai), would that help at all?

yea it should help. if you know the basics as youre naturally forced to learn it. I am pretty fluent but didnt know how to read at all. After a year I can now read at a 2nd grade level! not bad i guess lol

I'd help but I'm Lao. Trust me, I have been trying to learn Thai and it's difficult. Lao and Thai are very similar too. Imagine this, take all the grammar structure you have ever learned, throw it in the garbage, and start from scratch. Being taught from birth is the only way to be fluent. I can understand bits and bobs of Thai, but wow.... hard.

hey, im Lao too..a little tip on understanding Thai...80% of Thai and Lao are the same..the words that r different in Thai are used in the sentence the same way the Lao word would be, so most of the time you will already understand what is being said.

Thanks, the differences are just so small but important. Examples are

love = "huk" in Lao but "ruk" in Thai.

sing = "long pheng" in Lao, but "rong pleng" in Thai. My dad is too lazy to teach me, lol, he says I don't "need" do know Thai. Oh well, I am going to Thailand and Lao in the future.

i grew up learning lao and english at the same time. I understood thai by watching thai movies. I believe that the differences are so minor that a lao person should be able to carry a conversation with a thai person without a problem. But there's one exception, if the thai person is snobby, he/she will say that they don't understand the Laotian. i need to puke.
