I saw this in Woking in 2006! It was beyond amazing! Loved every minute! I have to admit I did duck during the 3D bit! It was the best 3D I've ever seen! I have both versions of the sound track and I love them both!Going to see the new tour on may the 12th so excited!!
I think that 3D is to be honest cheating. True they couldn't work with a lot of track for the UK tour because then it would be expensive. But still what made the original london production great was that seeing the characters race throughout the stage and the audience on race tracks surprised alot of people. If you take away that element you take away what made the show great.
@pixargod It wasn't just because of the expense. Many of the theatres in the UK physically wouldn't be able to hold the tracks that leave the main stage. Did you see the 3D tour live? I did, and it was amazing. They pulled it together so well it was almost seamless, the transition from stage to 3D was phenomenal. As for how they "took away what made the show great" ... No. They compensated one small element for another. You seem to be forgetting all the other bits that make it amazing.
Oh yes the fact that the orchestra is completely invisible during the whole performance and also the roller skates is also what makes the musical amazing as well as the bridge that forms into a ramp during the song AC/DC.
@pixargod Well the orchestra pit is generally hidden from the audiences view in theatre productions... and... well, duh. The roller skates are what make starlight express so unique. :D <3
I've never gotten to see it live, and that's probaby why. I'm told it's a show you have to see to fully appreciate. Mostly it's because I feel like Pearl's music is never performed to it's full potential. Vocally, the actresses tend to lack power. Now, on the original album, Pearl is great in "Only He" but she gets breathy and cheesy in evey other song!
Gotta love Starlight Express. I like the music and the concept, but I hate the original album. Why can't I find a Pearl I like? She has such powerful music, and these nasally kids just ruin it. Nothing against teenagers playing Pearl, since I'm 16 and would kill for a role like that. I'm just curious as to why these weak, fake sopranos seem to always get cast when the role demands much more.
Her name was Stephanie Lawrence, who also acted in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats when it played at the New London Theatre from 1981-2002. She sadly died at the age of 50 in 2000 of liver cancer.
@jenniebackman - Me too!! That would be the most awesome thing, I miss this show so much. Went to see it many times in London and was there for the final show, would be great to have Starlight on DVD as a memory!

you hate the original album? are you mad? did you ever see Starlight Express at the apollo Vic ??

@PyroDefysGravity ... Try getting the actual album. You'll find that the actress is of west-end quality, and not one of "those nasally kids".
