  • 7:28 Axel: Say your prayers >:) 7:33 Sparkster: CATCH ME IF YOU CAN!! 7:53 >:( Sparkster: TWO CAN PLAY THIS GAME!!! Axel: BRING IT ON!!! 8:04 Axe: Arrg If only we weren't so evenly matched 8:14 Sparkster: Fancy footwork 8:16 Sparkster: Wussing out already? Axel:......no Sparkster: Then stop cowarding away from me 8:39 Axel: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!! 8:45 POSSUM POWER BITCH!!
  • Brings back some memories. I sort of miss when games where orientated around a single badass anthropomorphic creature achieving the impossible.

  • Stage 5 background detail is lovely.. For a hard stage you can marvel in the beauty of RK 1930's design.

  • I remember dying millions of times on that robot chase scene before you get into your own back in the day :( can do it no problem now though haha

  • 7:31 ... when i was child... HOLY CRAP!!!

  • @hivemind99999 lmao dude same...that thing was so scary man but i loved taking it down. epic battle

  • Napoleon Pig is funny.

  • this game really puts some pressure on the genesis :D

  • And so, Steampunk was invented

  • Stage 5 music. Amazing.

I just love the aesthetic of this game in general. Sort of happy fantasy, but with a definite creepy side to it.

PS do you think Angry Birds stole the idea of green pigs from this game?

PPS STAGE V DAMN THAT IS A FUNKY-ASS BASELINE

  • Stage 5 music. Amazing.

  • Yes! you went for the life on the flying platform level like a pro.

  • I always had problems with Axle when I was younger, he seemed very smart for a Gen boss. Also at the end of stages I always tried to make Sparkster do something funny, but that was just me being a kid :)

  • As a kid I could NOT get past 4:50 for some reason. Because of that I'm waiting for this game to be re-released on the VC.

  • Makes you wonder how the hogs have all that technology in medival times... I'm pretty sure the machine drone 4 minutes in was also stolen by (or from) a Contra game on SNES. Damn it, if someone knows the game I'm talking about, let me know!

  • King Pig takes off into space like Dr. Evil.

  • 3:20

I expected to here something like 'destroy the pig!'

  • I want my challenging games back, this is what got me into rocket knight adventures in the first place along with it being an awesome game and having an awesome protagonist, end of rant.

  • Konami just don't make this series like they used to :(, they struck gold with this game, sparkster and rocket knight on the other hand pail in comparison, stupid casual gaming ruined this series, i don't want to speed run through rocket knight i want to have a blast (no pun intended) playing it i want a challenge, tough bosses, like the first one but more unpredictable and just as good but they never hit that mark and i hate his redesign just like punk sparkster it doesn't fit, this one did.

  • i remember being pissed as a kid whe he would run away.

  • I've always loved the Gradius/Lifeforce/Salamander references in this game.

  • Haha i love how there are so many similarities to Gradius

  • Question: "Why would swine never make successful empire?"

Answer: "They have technology that can create giant machines, energy launchers, and even force fields, and yet their airships depend on pigs on stationary bikes to function."

  • OMG this is the level I could NEVER EVER BEAT ARGHHHHH!!!! RAGEEEEE!

I always got crushed on the walls while the biggie was chasing me :(

  • Stage 5 was as far as I could get as a kid. By this point I was just physically and mentally exhausted. Maybe now that I'm older and more experienced I could finish it.

  • 1 hit kill pigs rocks.

  • 3:20 ITS THE BIG CORE.XD even in this game there are gradius references

  • 3.00 is the furthest I ever got as a kid. :(

  • I just noticed how in Megaman, Sonic, and the like the evil boss has the most nonsensical base. Granted, it's a lot more entertaining and neat than an overly predictable vent-route fortress in newer games these days.

  • It's amazing how the enemy can launch missiles in that perfect pattern...

  • 1:02

That thing used to scare me. so fucking scary....

  • I couldnt beat the first boss on this video for the longest time. But that was back when i was like 7 er 8yrs old? I dunno... Love the music

  • Stage 6 was as far as I ever got. I remember when this game came out. Rocket knight and pokemon red were the shit back then. ;-P

  • they were over 3 years between them

  • Ya, I know, but I played rocket knight a bit after it had come out. I would've been too young to even understand the concept of rocket knight if I had played it the moment it came out.

  • Whoa, how did you destroy that Junkbot so fast dude?!

  • Stage 5 is my favorite stage out of the others!

  • i did a playthrough on this too, actually my first playthrough on youtube. cant remember how many times i've beaten this game(probably over 50)everything is top-notch...especially the sprite design and music, when you play the game as much as we have...its simple

  • i remember axel's robot. used to scare the shit out of me.

  • yeah me too, a few of the bosses/monsters creeped me out as a kid. But I still went through the full game and beat it including the re-entry.

  • i hated that robot boss, today was my first time beatin it lol

  • this game has Porky((or ganon)) writen all over it!

  • Is this version easier than magadrive,is it tool assisted or are you a boss killer?

  • I assure you, there are no tools, trainers, hacks, cheats, or any other act of lameness.

the secret is being able to observe how the engine works when palying the game and using those properties to your advantage.

  • It's probably the Megadrive version. The Genesis version has you die in one hit on hard, as well as start you off with no extra lives and no continues. You essentially have to beat the game without getting hit once.

  • wrong, you are describing ultra hard mode, the code to unlock it is given to you after you beat the game on hard mode.

genesis and megadrive were identical systems, genesis was the name given to it in NA.

  • It seems a lot easier now.... ur killing the bosses way too fast.....

  • I remember, i always died on that Robot part haha

  • I wish I had thought of what you did when the roof was coming down I did it the hard way

  • played this game when i was 7 or 8 on megadrive. I loved (And love) stage 6 music

  • what animal is nr 5 boss

  • An opossum, like Sparkster.

  • Dude you were doing some dancing when that robot boxing match was going on.

  • 2:20 the music for this part, and this part itself is BEAST

  • god damn I used to hate those spikey armoured guys

  • this game brings the fuxxing ownage

  • dis game was the shit

  • Man this was my favorite game to play on the sega genesis.I wish it would come out on the the Wii shopping channel or something, but fat chance of that happening.

  • from 4:45 on the game actually gets tough

  • wait...why is a possem fighting a constant barige of pigs? Do possems and pigs hate each other? lol

  • maybe :D

  • Did anyone else notice how the boss out at 3:30 looks straight out of Gradius, another Konami game?

  • It's suppossed to, its a reference to gradius.

  • 4:52 "last one at at the door's dead!"

  • and the music...i know, it's been said soooo many times, but the music is still fucking awesome!

  • this game was soo much better than it's sequel. what were they thinking on the sequel?

  • Did you disappear? LOL!

  • That robot battle to me was sooooo fucking epic when I was a kid playing this ^_^

I busted like 20 nutts during this battle the first time I got here =P

  • the teleport capsule sound like a fart LOL

  • LOL at 3:13-3:14

  • That fourth boss (who showed up a couple times earlier in the level) looks like someone Snap, Crackle and Pop kicked out of their circle of friends...

  • I love the song of the stage 5 when you are flying above pork city and yeh, I first played this game back in the sega genesis times fucking time back and for to be honest i never finished the game back then, untill now

(I still got the game cartridge like a "trophy", one of the best games =D )

  • I loved how this game was loaded with quirky humour, I mean from silly expressions from troops to the poor devotindos trooper holding on to the rocket at 3:15. I still enjoy playing this years later!

  • did this do well in usa? cos its a forgotten game in ireland+uk. its a shame...falls in the box marked great but not known....with Dynamite Headdy, Greendog, Quackshot and fecking Tail Spin....Tail Spin !!! i should get a few thumbs up for remembering that....

  • Tail Spin, as in, the game based on the cartoon that was once my all time favourite?

    THEY HAD A GAME?

  • oh yeah you can find it on youtube ...and Tasmanian Devil the game that was great was well

  • Oh yeah I remember playing Tasmanian Devil back in the day!

It was alright, but was a tad frustrating and slippery too XD. Wasn't my favourite though. But it was satisfying to reach the end after going through hell with the entire game. But sure was funny grabbing and swallowing enemies!

Another good Looney Toons game was Road Runner for the MegaDrive. Tiny Toons was good as well. Oh, and not forgetting Mickey Mouse and Donald: Castle of Illusion, my all time favourite!

  • Castle of Illusion !!! and Quackshot with donald duck! was epic..i loved the fact that it wasnt really level1 - level2-level3 ...but trips around the world...and u had to complete the grand canyon and get the red plunger...so u can complete transylvania etc...etc..Castle of Illusion and quackshot stuck in my mind cos i didnt own them i rented COI once and it was a great game...and QS it was a swop think i had it for 3 days only..AHHHH swopping games as a kid the good old days.. memories !!!

  • Oh, wait... I just realised I made a mistake. I meant to say Mickey Mouse and Donald: WORLD of Illusion LOL. I hadn't played Castle of Illusion yet, nor did I play Quackshot.

I can still remember how I got World of Illusion. I was playing another Mickey Mouse game (the one that involved going back to Steamboat willie, ghost house and alchemist castle) which I borrowed from my sister's friend. I wanted to own it so badly that my sis accidentally bought WorldofIllusion. And I'm glad she did.

  • oh shit lol, I remember going to blockbuster and renting that game where you go back to Mickies old episodes. The first one was steamboat willie in white and black, i still remember that.

  • Apparently they also ported it to the Playstation, but I just didn't "feel" the playstation version as I did with the Megadrive version. Maybe its because of the loading times and the fact that its on a Playstation? XD

  • BATTLETOADS....

  • Life force Level 1 at the end

  • Watching the creepy train boss and the dancing pig makes me want to take acid and watch someone play this game.

  • Its very nice to see this game get some praise :) I'm not the only one yay!

  • Too bad this game never really the hipe that it deserves. And you made stage 5 look WAY too easy, when in actuality its probably the hardest of all the stages.

  • Is this the European version of the game?

  • Another fantastic performance on some difficult levels.

  • 7:58 - Rock'em Sock'em Robots!

  • Sparkster 4 the next Smash bros game!!!!

  • Man I thought no one else played this game lol. I remember playing this at like 4 years old and trying my damnest to get past level 5. I just could never do it. I remember when my cousin came and beat it for me lol.

  • does anyone else think the song that plays while ur fighting the big bosses sound like a wicked techno song?

  • The main boss music is well fantastic. One of the best tunes on a video game.

  • At 3:13, I always wondered if you could hit the pig on the missile. It's probably there for laughs. I'm surprised you could own the first boss (the robot) so easily and in one round! I usually have to go about 3 rounds then lay the captain's behind out like he stole something!

  • definitely one of the best platforms ever made

  • Alot of the music from this game (especially stage 5) reminds me of Sonic Pinball. The music sound so similar. Seriously.

Especially during the Boss battle, in stage 5.

  • Actually it sounds More Like Castlevania for the X6800.

  • 0:57, back in 3rd grade, when me and my old friend first saw the boss, we dubbed it "The Doofus". Mind you, we got our butts kicked by the Doofus, and when we finally defeated the giant robot doofus thing, we got our butts kicked by the screaming little doofus because we had like one heart left and got hit by surprise. I loved this game...

  • tip: if your good enough than you can slip beetween the lasers in the stage five (flight portion)miniboss just watch out for when it sops or fires a ton of them at once

  • man i love this game! So awesome!

  • la stage 5 è la migliore impossibile non amarla e prendersi una certa dose di strizza e ottima esecuzione!

  • "Lord Axel! Sparkster has infiltrated the Engine Room!"

"What!?! How did he survive the series of cables and swinging platforms on the underside of the ship leading straight to the door? No matter. Release the Laser-Abdomen-Seizure-Bot! That will surely finish him off!"

  • You're not looking deep enough! Axel is Sparkster's father figure, he obviously set up the whole game and created the deus pig as a personal development challenge for his son. So in the end Sparkster is ready for the REAL challenge ahead (where the falling ceilings don't have a pathway...).

  • i don't remember the story section of the manual saying anything about Axel being any sort of father figure, if anything he was more like the stereotypical traitor, in fact i think he killed sparkster's master

  • I made it right to the beggining of this clip in the game

I was only four but I played the begging couple of levels a shitload of times.

I don't remember doing the actual levels tho, I just remember the boss battles!

    thanks for the post man!

  • Stage 5 was my fav. The music was best in the game and so were the visuals. Never hear the music much as I had to use slow mo all but one time. Did a yank the cart trick and the game glitched gave me endless lives. U can't tell me U don't see a few same things in this and sonic. And that Rockum sockum robot fight was a bitch

  • the key to the robot fight is to wait for him to attack, then backing off slightly allowing him to miss. if you did it right you should be able to attack immediately without being hit

  • you just can't beat giant pig robot battles.

    simply epic!

my favorite level has to be the space chase though lol, this is such a classic game, and I played it all the time as a kid..infact i still play it!

  • Stage 5, BEST in the game.

  • damn straight

  • Damn you owned that pig mech fast! I always used a different method that took longer. Oh wow I thought you screwed up at 5:08. Good job.

  • god damn, pig mech duel. Took me forever to beat him, and you do it like its nothing. Nice job.

  • I have a VHS somewhere of me one life-ing this game back in the day. :) Seems alot, shorter, now..

  • I was a Genesis fan but I never played this. Shame on me... I'll play it on an emulator. ;)

  • Anyone spot the Gradius references in this game? I do

  • Gradius? You're probably referring to the levels where he's flying.

  • and the sub-boss in the first part of level 5 (it resembles the Big Core from Gradius, then it imitates Tetran from Salamander)

  • I was cursing all the way to stage 7 when I played this. After watching this vid and seeing all the tricks you use, this game is not nearly as tough as I thought. It's because of videos like this that I love youtube. I have a new appreciation for how well designed this game is now

  • What the hell? I don't remember the level 4 boss being that easy...

  • I know! It took me about a dozen hits to put the smackdown on that one.

  • I still remember I did a boost one time towards my robot and I passed over it and fell dead...

  • Wow...big oops there. I think that happened to me once too. I got frustrated outta heck when that happened.

  • I hate that level! Stupid ass machine level!! I could never beat that level!!! ARRRGH!!!

  • Wow you wasted that giant pig boss really fast. You did excellent during the flying sequence.

  • Love this game! LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVE! It's been 14 yrs??? Wow!

  • How did you beat Axle Gear in World 5 so easily? I couldn't even get to the robot that easily because Sparkster goes a tad bit slow, they dont give you a head start right before Axle Gear starts chasing you, and the passageways you have to navigate through are too long.

  • It takes some practice ^^; Boss scared me half to death.

  • 4 Hits to the core and the big robot goes down that quick....
