  • Thanks for the comment and you are correct that Arlo added his own touches to the song. He may have had a slightly more sophisticated sense of harmony as the original was pretty basic. Tough to say whether that was an improvement or detraction from the original. I know most singer/songwriters are more into the story and less into the presentation or marketability of their tunes. Those modifications certainly contributed to Steve becoming better known, respected and recognized.

  • I prefer the way Stevie actually wrote the tune! Originally, there was no "D" chord in the bridge and none of the liberties that Arlo took with the song. So, the song originally contained only 5 chords. Also, the rhythmic kicks that Arlo inserted, while interesting, weren't included either. Steve started to use the "D" chord after Arlo's version hit and recorded it as such on his first album. I know this for a fact because I used to play bass for Steve at the Earl of Old Town in Chicago!
