  • The only version that I got goosebumps from!

  • how can anyone not love her.... she's just simply AMAZING........

  • Amazing !

  • @bc1050 Susan Boyle? are you kidding!?

  • This is a weak performance. Ethel Merman and Paulette Ann blow her away on this song.

  • She's a skilled actress! There's a reason why she's not singing it like Mama Rose! I don't thin she'd sing it less than the character without a reason! She's not stupid after all...

  • Honestly there's nothing here that I don't also feel from Bernadette Peter's version. She brings a slightly softer edge to the song at the beginning, but it all ends the same.

  • i love her dress. And , I do think she did a great job with this song. I don't picture her actually playing Momma Rose, but stranger things have happened. And yes, it is out of context, so she lightened it up quite a bit. In context, this song can be donright frightening.

  • I love me some Ruthie Henshall, however, this is not a good match for her, her voice is just to sultry and smooth for this number... it needs more brass, the actress needs to chew her words as she sings them

  • @Evilqueen1985

Well said & well put! I second that emotion!

  • This is the only song I've seen Ruthie do bad on. She's not enough of a diva to do this song justice.

  • she is way to nice for such a big role

  • Not bad.............

  • If she could manage her many affectations, she would be SENSATIONAL. She has so many cloying mannerisms but what a great natural instrument. The orchestration did not help. The end is just horrid.

  • Ruthie Henshall is a great singer and musical actor

  • Ruthie is my Favorite female singer, BUT this is not the right tune for her. As an analogy, contrast SueBo's pedestrian rendition of "I dreamed a dream" with Ruthie's Les Mis performance, where she brings gut-wrenching emotion to the song. Similarly, this song is meant to be sung by a manic stage mother in denial -- and meant to be BELTED --Patti Lupone's rendition at the Tonys is the standard. Ruthie is best with a song that builds slowly and climaxs: "maybe this time," "as long as he needs me"

  • I disagree. Ethel Mermon set the standard for this tune.

  • I disagree. I think Ruthie does this song justice, and i would LOVE to see her as Mama Rose. I personally do not care for Patti LuPone's portrayal of Mama Rose, I think she overacts.

  • I love Ruthie! She's one of the best out there!!!

  • Hey all,

this is a song for a mature monster-mother in showbiz. Even Bette Middler was to young to sing it. But try to get the first Gypsy movie, where Rosalind Russell plays the mother. That's the way how this song has to be sung!

  • I dont like Patti Lupones version of this song at all. It sounds terrible. Its so shouty and so crazy. This version however, I think is really really nice. I love it.

  • This just goes to show that certain songs fit certain singers. I love both Ruthie and Lupone (who doesn't?). I like Ruthies "I dreamed a dream" much better than Patti's; and similarly I think the fifty-eight year old Patti did a much better job with this tune at the 2008 Tony awards. Love Ruthie singing "Maybe this time"-- to me her version cleans Liza's clock-- Liza being too much razza-matazz and hot-cha-cha for me.

  • i sang this in a show it's good song i never herd her sing but wanted to listens and am diasapointed i thought she would be better

  • NOB

  • I love Ruthie, but i really don't like this version of the song. It's different... & i guess to some it could be considered good, but just not in my opinion...

  • Okay, I worship Patti, but Ruthie is fabulous too. And Ethel Merman is LEGEND !

  • Love this version, but the fact that they speed up the 'everything's coming up..." parts bothers me. I just can't get used to it no matter how much I try

  • I took this to competition and sang this...I'm only 16! So if your in your twenties..age doesn't matter honey:)

  • Bete midler is better. But Ruthie is definately a runner up! Well done Ruthie!

  • I sang this for a show. I'm in my 20s and one person complained I was too young to sing it! I preferred to sing it more in context, but I don't know how many people actually notice the difference unless they are into knowing about the show. But really why can't a younger person sing this?! It's a great song in it's self! It's not like she's playing Mama Rose here! Its a concert!

  • I Love Ruthie

  • i myself prefer bette midlers version of it! i have seen that film so many times and just gets better and better!

  • This is kinda not Ruthie's best.

  • when she says "eveything's coming up roses" at 2:50 she looks like she wants to kill you

  • omg this is not good.

i have nothing against ruthie (i even like her fantine better than patti lupone's) but this is just not anywhere close to what this song is about. the interpretation is off and she doesn't have a strong enough voice. watch patti lupone's tony award performance for the way this song should be performed. better yet, go see patti in gypsy- i saw it three times-it is AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • i agree with you, but i think that they may have taken it out of context on purpose,I give Ruthie and the director of this "show" more credit than to totally mis-interpret this song, its a classic. Thats all I'm saying, but I like it in context much better!

  • LuPone is OVERRATED

  • ok soooo in like 15 years she definitely has to play mama rose... like it shoud be a written theatre law, now, that she must when she is the right age!

  • i second that (:

(much better that Patti Lupone :P)

  • i think people are forgetting that she's singing this song out of context - she's trying to entertain the audience and sound good while bringing in elements of the dramatic circumstances. She is not trying to play Mama Rose. It's in concert for a television audience. She's doing a great job.

  • I agree completely!

Thank you for clearing that up.

  • @alwy15 A musical theater actress is performing for a show that's called "The Sound of Musicals". I would have expected more.

  • @alwy15, I also think that not enough people are reading your comment! D:

  • She's too young and good looking, but give her fifteen-twenty years and she could do this role easy. She's awesome and her belt is astonishing.

  • A lot of people say that this version is too nice, and I agree, but this was shown as Saturday night TV, so we shouldn't expect much in the way of interpretation. I personally would love to see Ruthie do Gypsy; having seen her in 'The Woman in White'I know that she does desperation well enough.

  • I saw Gypsy on Broadway... this version was pretty good too :)

  • I really, really love that dress. And Ruthie... well, I probably shouldn't start on her, because I would go on and on about how she is a goddess of musical theatre.

  • Ruthie Henshall is very talented, but nobody, i mean, NOBODY beats Angela Lansbury

  • Shed be a good Gypsy Rose Lee lol

  • Great!!!!!7

  • wow that smile (the voice goes with out saying)

  • I LOVE Ruthie, but this song was sung a little too sweetly for me. It lacked the grit of Rose

  • Agreed.

LOVE Ruthie & she gave a great performance. But this song is supposed to just *DRIP* of Desperation! Mama's gotta WANT it! Beautiful voice & yet it almost seemed like she coulda really pushed a lot more out, like she wasn't even giving this song her "ALL" Which speaks volumes about her talent: Ruthie exudes it!

YES- This version IS too conifident & upbeat for what it's about & why it's sung.

PS: Thanx for posting this Love seeing good entertainment out there So hard to find now

  • ~>AGREED.

    {Agreed, *Megmac3901*}

I mean I LOVES me some Ruthie & she gave a great performance.

~~>But this song is supposed to just *DRIP* & *REEK* of Desperation! Ya know?!?! Mama's gotta WANT it!

Beautiful voice & yet it almost seemed like she coulda really pushed a lot more out; like she wasn't even giving this song her "ALL!"

Which speaks volumes about her talent: Ruthie exudes it!

    So:

~~> YES: this version *IS* TOO CONFIDENT & UPBEAT for what it's about & WHY it's sung.

  • this makes me believe she could play mama in a few years, she just needs to get into it a little more, but that comes with the character and the rest of the show, well done ruthie x

  • I think this tempo's a bit to fast.

  • she sings this song so perfect!!!

  • She is too beautiful (:

  • it's from gypsey

  • i love her dress i love her voice i love her hair i love her!!!!!!!!!! ^^ xx<3

  • I prefer the chicago musical movie with Renne Zellwiger and Catherine Zeta Jones

  • Sorry, but I grew up listening to the movie and she just hasn't the energy or wit of Rosalind Russell in the same song. She has a good voice though.

  • i adore her she looks gorgeous and her voice is beautiful xxxx

  • when she say "HONEY EVERYTHINGS COMING UP ROSES", she kinda said that to fast from when i had to sing this sonf for our school play but it might be different last time....... ANYWAYS THAT WAS GREAT AND A WONDERFUL VOICE!!!

  • she's gorgious! i love her energy on stage, but i definitly don't like how she dropped her british accent on this song!! i love her british accent- this song kinda kills it...ehhh oh well. hahah she's pretty, makes up for it ;)

  • wow-"mama sure is hot, and sings well, too"

  • MAMA is gonna see to it !

  • Is it me or is she like really hyper :P ... Still a LEDGEND though <3

  • Love this version, but I was brought up with Rosemary Clooney's, and the straight "Everything's coming up roses." is hard for me to deal with.

  • Do you mean rosalind russell? she was in the original movie version with natalie wood.

  • No, I've never seen the movie. (I've seen clips, all the major musical numbers) But Rosemary Clooney recorded this song, too. That's the version I heard first, she sang the song with a lot more fluidity.

  • Love her performance of this.

    So different!

    Fantastic!!!

  • ruthie kicks ass!!!

  • I hate her fake Rs in "startin'" "everything" "star"

--is she Irish? In that case, she's forgiven. Otherwise...

  • She's british

  • AWESOME singer, as soon as I get a divorce from my wife, i'll try to marry Ruthie, WOW she IS a PERFORMER

  • oh Ruthie, you are amazing.

  • wtf???

  • After Ethel Merman blowing this song off the map, why does anyone else even bother.

  • umm...cuz she was great for her time, but now there are much better actors to sing it...and much better singers.

    and nicer people.

  • at first i wasn't impressed, but then i heard tha last note. wow!

  • This is so great!

I was wondering if you had her singing Anything Goes too? Someone had put up part of her singing the song but not all of it.

  • Thanks for posting this I have been posting many, many songs about Roses on Katie Melua's Forum and this Beauty was the ideal song for MY FINALE!

  • Amazing!

  • she's so adorable.

  • amazing as per usual...thanks 4 posting

  • nice

  • the next revival of Into the woods, i see Ruthie as the Baker's wife... :)

  • Thank you so much for this vid. She's so awesome! Heart The Henshall <3 lol

  • Shes wonderful as usual!
