I really regret that she never did the 3 Donizetti Queens in her prime. In spite of the "cluckatura" of her coloratura ...she could negotiate high notes only like Callas and Sutherland. Hearing some of her "pirated recordings" - specifically Norma and Armida - you get a new appreciation for La Deutekom! There is no one know with the capabilities of these three ..and thy wee almost all contemporaries.
@NEBESHIKU This was actually recorded long after her retirement and she did it more so for her fans. Of course the voice is not as wonderful as it was in her prime but ....
Boy, to succeed in this caballetta, you need to have the trils down pat, and the right tone.. the trills here are not clean and tight, and the tone, is better than the bright tone she sang with during her career.. Frankly, I was expecting this to be a lot worse than it is, but it is still not good.. This is some hard music.. The vibrato intereferes with her tone soooo much.. Always did.
@leonardo-- I agree about the difficulties she is having here, but I would like to add for the record, that her brightness of tone was one of the great delights to my ear. It was so refreshing and recalled the days when the darker voices of many mezzo-sopranos were brighter than many sopranos today. The result was soprano characters sounding young, which is the actual archetype of the soprano instrument in this medium of archetypes. Youth was considered the first acting duty of the soprano.
I agree whith eradesso. I don't think there's any sopranos nowadays that have the dramatic coloratura instruments of Deutekom no matter how much they wait and age.
No matter how long they wait, they they don't have Deutekom's dramatic voice.
And frankly, I don't think there's any sopranos nowadays that have the dramatic coloratura instruments of Deutekom and Moser - no matter how much they wait and age.
It's enough to listen to their early carreer recordings, the drama, colour and weight was already there.
She never gave any farewell concerts. She retired immediately after a 2nd period of heart problems.
This recording is indeed from 1997 - in the same year she made a surprise appearance in a benefit concert, singing Merce dilette amiche and Liebe, du Himmel auf Erden - bringing down the house.
Hi there, I am quite a fan of Deutekom but that last live recording of Merce Dilette was not good, better for you not to hear it and listen to her when she was in her prime. However, for nostalgic reasons it was a great thing

Bravissima!!!!

Here Deutekom shows she's out of her league with this assoluta role and just is a source of amusement and pity.

@NEBESHIKU In this case I must agree with you.

Deutekom is like the best wine... the older, the better. It's a pitty, that her health problems stopped her career so early :-(

Recorded live in 1997 after her heart attack.
Yes, she is older, the voice has thickened and the fioratura a bit labored but that unmistakable timbre is still there.
I have the complete recording and pull it out every now and then.

1997? Are you sure?
She retired in 1985 after giving farewell concerts also after her heart attack...
She was still in great shape... NO WOBBLE, but the vibrato loosened a bit
