THIS IS THE ONE THAT STARTED IT ALL .THE ILL LOOK .THE SWAGGER.I CREATED A T-SHIRT OF IT FOR MYSELF IF ANYONE WANTS TO BUY IT.I THINK ;;HARD BOILED''IS A STRONG FOLLOW UP .
iv heard that some of the music from this film was used for a itv murder mystery and suspense trailer in the eighties if any one knows about this or can help please let us know cheers
@LukeMM95 Though Mark fell in standing to the bottom of the organization, he's not precisely a drunk hobo. He's ankle height, but not quite down the gutter. Also, it IS HK mafia. It's pretty easy to get ahold of guns and ammo.
Also, useless trivia concerning guns. Mark uses a Beretta M92 pistol, the classic John Woo semi-automatic that's in almost every movie of his. But the OTHER pistol Mark uses is a Browning Hi-Power, American semi-automatic that also uses 9mm ammo like the Beretta.
@HarpoTheVillain Thanks for the info. I'm well aware about the Beretta pistol and this is one of the rare scenes where John Woo has shown it being reloaded ;)
@mappingtheshit Well sorry if I'm not familar with how the triads work but at this point Mark has been reduced to a simple errand boy and I wasn't aware the triads armory was open for his low status.
lol I can understand changing the dialogue when dubbing a foreign film so you can match up with the lip sync but why would you change the subtitles so they don't match the actual spoken language? Is it so it matches the dubbed dialogue? Why would we need that? Plus, can't you do a better job with it? I'm guessing a foreign company did the actual subtitles with the awful grammar. Still, something is better than nothing. Hopefully, Dragon Dynasty releases this film and part II.
When i watch this movie I always think of the scene when Chow Yun Fat is on the speed boat with the money and is home free but then he turns back, if I could do the same thing.
I really hope a remaster of this movie is on Dragon Dynasty's radar. They apparently snuck out a Blu-Ray version of "The Killer" last month. The only movie I could want on Blu-Ray more than this would be "Hard Boiled," but apparently it's still only available on the deluxe version of "Stranglehold" on PS3.
@cubdukat yea and it's not a great Blu-Ray version of the movie. It's strictly the movie (which is not much better in quality than the DD copy but it has no special features, main menu, etc.
don't know. could be too old for making more movies and/or running out of ideas. what happened to chow yun fat? he's a mad actor. his movies were better in the 80's and 90's...that famous dual gun ballet
Hollywood's not interested in storytelling; that's why he ended up going back to Hong Kong to direct. I can't really say I blame him. They just won't let him do what he does best, even though that's why they hired him. The only movie he's made here that's come close to anything he did before then was "Face/Off." That's why a lot of the Hong Kong directors that came after him don't do American films anymore--too much bullshit with the Hollywood system.
I think John Woo left HK also because of the chinese takeover. He was worried that he wouldn't have freedom to create his films anymore. He comes over here, and he has even less freedom to create than he thought he would under the chinese system.
I would love to see him team up with Chow Yun Fat again for one more crime/cop drama.
You know, A bullet in the head was made from his plot for A Better Tomorrow 2. It was a flashback to Mark's origins, along with the bar scene he mentioned to Shing
It's almost hyprocritical, that they invited him to make films and then basically tried to screw him over. That's why low-budget films are so much better. This is a low-budget film, as is the case with many Hong Kong films, so you're right. Some of Woo's US stuff was good, but this HK generation was where he shined.
@BatesKrisbates I think nowadays the only two HK directors to have a really successful career here would be Wong Jing and Johnnie To. Wong Jing could take Michael Bay's place.
@BatesKrisbates They chewed up and spit out a lot of HK directors here--for a while, that was the flavor of the month in Hollywood. But in Woo's defense, at least he didn't let Jean-Claude Goddamn drive him back to Hong Kong like Ringo Lam and Tsui Hark did.
BTW, did Tsui make another American movie after "Knock-Off"?
This is the Anchor Bay DVD release. It's a solid transfer and the subtitles are fantastic, but the audio skips during the shoot-out in this scene and the beginning/end credits have been omitted (Anchor Bay used an international print to make their transfer).
This scene is great! Beautiful acting from Chow and Ti. A Better Tomorrow is my favourite film and Mark is just the best character ever. Thanks for posting!
I just came to take a look at those Alain Delon sunglasses... LOL

If Mark is suppossibly poor at the part, then how or where did he get two semi automatic pistols? Well, he did say he was a...God!!!
LukeMM95 1 year ago
@LukeMM95 He found a gang, stole a gun from one of the members, killed the entire gang and took all their weapons. It's Badass Economy 101.
