It is hard to do this variation without a gi because it is harder to hold on to the wrist (compared with the gi). One easier way to do this no-gi, is to use a de la Riva style hook on the arm (as opposed to the foot on the biceps). This off loads some of the grip to the hooking leg. The rest of the sweep is just the same. This sweep is still a little harder no-gi than it is gi.
You can use this in no-gi with a grip on the tricep with the left hand instead of the sleeve. But you don't have as much leverage against a wary opponent. In MMA...it's possible, but you had better be very good at it or expect to eat some punches if you miss.
not sure to be honest , i personally dont do it in no gi as i find it hard to keep the grip on the wrist (im not the one showing the move in the video)
@bilbaisim It is an open guard directed entirely for gi but I have seen a pretty cool variation for no gi where you grab behind the triceps instead of the sleeves near the wrist and put your shin on their arm instead of your foot, since its so much closer
its not suitable for mma , cant grab clothing and which will make it alot harder to control the arms from punches, and theas so many other sweeps to use in wea you arent so open to attack in mma, that said theas no reason why it cant be used you just will have to adapt it to suit your mma

@TheSovietAlliance saw the same thing at my dojo, and I was wondering about it as well. I would ask, but he doesn't read english, so I don't want to embarrass him.
Thats because you suck. Its VERY effective. A spinning heel kick works, you just have to practice to get good at it. Don't disrespect a postion you obviously don't know how to use.
Timing is essential no doubt but the problem with this technique the way it's shown is that you leave your self open and any fighter with some experience will take advantage of that. But if you mean those weak club fighters then yah if your timing is quick you can over come that venerable position.
This is a transitory technique. You open the guard and place the shin across the belly to goad your opponent into moving. If they don't move, you sweep. If they do move - i.e., push the knee, and go to the side - you hook the leg and sweep.
In any case, as long as you keep control of the arm, you have options even if the opponent gets to your side and you don't sweep him.
What are you talking about? I've seen the best guys use Spider Guard, including this technique, and they use it with out a problem. What about Caio Terra and Mauricio 'Tinguinha' Mariano? They are the best of the best of world hampions. They specialize in Spider Guard and its sweeps.
u can do it without the knee , but its harder since u have to hav the right timeing ; as soon as he starts to drop his weight on u to establish a side control you'll do it ..

this looks a little risky to use in MMA. has anybody here used it in an MMA fight or real fight with any consistent success?

@Angel7black im not sure but i think its mainly for sport jiu jitsu, spider guard is mainly for sport gi bjj ...

@bilbaisim yeah but i assume theres a way to pull this off in no gi competion to right

@Angel7black no shit, it owuldnt work in mma, gi jiu jitsu is quite a bit different then no gi or mma jiu jitsu
TheTwill12 1 year ago
@Angel7black work on your grip and grab right above the gloves so they can not pull their hand back for MMA

We worked this sweep a lot yesterday in class and it is really nice. Once you sweep, you have some nice options to finish from there!

That's a really weak sweep! Don't try it in competition that's all I can say.

only weak if your technique i.e.timing is weak.

Oh, BTW, it's "vulnerable," not "venerable."

IMPOSSIBLE TO DO if your opponent pass the guard with his hips close to the ground (you can't slip your knee in)
Impossible à faire si votre adversaire passe avec les hanches au sol, pas la place de passer le genou.
