i don't feel like she's being a gold digger (in ref to description) she just wants someone that can meet her at the level she's at or above so she wont have to take care of a grown man that has no ambition
In this time any woman is gold digger who is honest about money. Men in these days and times want to shack up. Have you cook, clean, and service them but feel like you are suppose to split everything, to hell with that you are not splitting the vagina. If a woman wants to split the bills she can do that with her girlfriend, a man is suppose to pay the rent, a woman can pay the utilities- becuz "men are suppose to be head of the house, according to the Lord." Ladies dont take advantage help out!!
@guv859 Well, she is with the Lord, but this is not to offend anyone but lazy men who use women, and never contribute to the household, and sorry to say there are a lot of men in this generation who are like that, they dont want to do anything but sit on their butts;play games and smoke bud all day. While the woman goes too work. But some of it is women's fault for being desperate and getting with losers, because they have to have a man and hate being alone. It is sad, but is meant to offend.
@blaquegirl77 Yes, this is still an offensive song, as it was then. By the 1980s women had already spent over a century struggling for equality, standing side by side with men who wanted to see them reap the same rewards as they for their hard work. I could go on and discuss the struggles of the working class for a decent wage and conditions, but there is limited space. This glib, mindless drivel has done nothing for equality.
Sooooo dumb!! People please. More men live off of women than the other way around and that's the TRUTH RUTH! In my personal experience, the only people offended by this song were either a) Moochers in their own right, or b) stingy people who always feel someone is trying to take them regardless. Maybe I'll play this song on the next date...see how he responds...lol
@michelesbiz I have to agree with you. As a GAY MAN... My mother had a man and all he do was sit on his ass. I make my own money, then frankly I had a man but I helped the hell out him. A month after my birthday we broke up because all he do was spend my money on beer and drugs. He wouldn't help himself. I believe a relationship suppose to be 50/50 not who get the money.
IF YOU'RE OFFENDED BY THIS SONG, YOU'RE PROBABLY A TRIFLIN ASS B!+(# (MALE/FEMALE) WHO WANTS SOMETHING FOR NOTHING. GO LOOK UP BILLIE PRESTON'S SONG "NOTHING FROM NOTHING" (LEAVES NOTHING, U GOTTA HAVE SOMETHIN IF U WANNA BE WITH ME). AND THAT'S COMING FROM A MAN. GET IT!!!
@icypolarbear No she is being an adult, and honest. Have you seen these men who are living with women, and dont have jobs. It is very ridiculous how many men are living on women black and white. It is so sad, because men dont want to be men, but the same goes for women.
This is for Gazillionaire Steve J-O-B-S, who just passed away. Remember, gazillionaires who are all men except for Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart, you can't take it with you, so pay your female employees MORE than men. Girl Brains get smarter with computers when the old fashioned carrot-and-stick approach is used. Otherwise, stick it up your greedy asses. Like the black dude ends every sentence on the TV show Office, Shove it up your butt. The senoritos don't care-o when there's no denaro.
i find it funny (and quite sad, honestly) that some people interpret the woman in the song to be a gold digger. to me, the lyrics say: if we are going to be together, you need to have a job and earn your own money, cause you sure as hell aren't going to live off of me. :p
Watch the vid again. The mercedes, the jewelry ..she specifically asks "what can you do for me?" It's a song about golddiggers. 'nothin from nothin' implies she has nothing.
@jewelz86 you're right that's what the song is about,it's just a play on words,I got what the song was about with the men i would meet, didn't have a job, didn't have a car, didn't have any money, live at home with his Mama! and i would anyways think of this song.
This is a classic song. I think people think too deep into a song, instead of enjoying it for it is, which is entertainment. In essence, we men should be working, instead of trying to be fake wanna be hustlers and what have you. A man who works is the first step to being a responsible human being.
If you are in Maryland and workout at either Ballys in Catonsville or Top Shape Fitness in Columbia beware of Andye Kitt. She's a gold digger big time.
i can´t choose which song from her is my favorite, but this one is very high on my list....MORE FANTASTIC ´80´s music at my channel!!! Take a look....
WRONG!!! Theres NOTHING in this song that even implies that the guy has to be rich. WHat he HAS to be is EMPLOYED and self-sufficient. Im a man, and Ive never been offended by this song, because Ive NEVER even contemplated the thought of being taken care of, by ANYBODY.
Gwen herself said it was about working together. Both should have jobs and work together. In the song she never claims she wants a man just for his money. RIP GG.
you got to have a j-o-b" . She never said you have to make six figures! Damn! It's about being a man and knowing how to treat a women. Part of being a man is being a provider. If you look at the words in the video, one of the words is "FAMILY". Take care of your family. If you can avoid wearing a condom, you must care about that woman enough to plant your seed in her and marry her so man up.
And for the record, I'm a MARRIED black women. There are a lot of black women who are not married because they choose not to date outside our race and they CHOOSE to be single instead of settling for bs from men who are on the dl, gay, incarcerated, convicts, have responsibility/commitment issues or are shallow. Not because they are gold diggers. Most black women are hard-working women and refuse to settle for a man who is not. That's why other ethnicities are checking for black women nowadays.
Ppl especially men take this the wrong way. Basically a woman gets feds up with a man who's not trying to do anything for her but screw her and not commit. You need to have more to offer than some dick and a disease. This song is not for the men who want a family and takes care of business. Its for the nothin ass men who want something for nothing. People ... she never said anything about shopping sprees and what not ... there's way more bills than the rent ... All she's saying is that if she has a man he has to be able to stand on his own. Get a freaking job so you can handle some damn bills ... is that too much to ask ??
in case anyone misunderstood my point, no i dont expect a man to pay all my bills and rent. and pay for dinner. but i DO expect him to help me out. its called 50/50. and yes we should want a man to treat us like the queens we are. they'll just go to next woman and treat them way better.
this song was and still is a disgrace to our community. and OF COURSE BLACK PEOPLE ARE TOO DUMB TO REALIZE IT. This song influenced black women to look at men as meal tickets and not partners who they can work with to achieve something. This is why 70% of black women are single today. black women always have their eyes on WHAT SOMEBODY CAN DO FOR THEM EXCEPT. but they should have their eyes on how can TWO PEOPLE WORK TOGETHER AND ACHIEVE WHAT THEY BOTH NEED AND WANT. WE ARE SO DUMB
@ImalHasan , If that is all you got out of this song and you truly feel that way about black women, then I have a bridge I want to sell you! And you can do whatever you want with it, maybe even jump off it into a cup of water!!!!!
talking about working together through partnerships would have been a better message for our people. Like I said before, this song has influence black women to think of men only as objects of money earners. other women in America do not think like this nor do they have songs like this. THIS IS WHY OTHER WOMEN EXCEPT FOR BLACK WOMEN ARE MARRIED.
MAN: "hey, baby, whats goin on?" WOMAN: "THE RENT, MUDDAFUCKA! u got a job?" MAN: "well....i...i..well...i...i" WOMAN: "well, get the fuck out my face!"
I used to enjoy this song as a kid. The song was controversial and insightful. However, the women I knew or know now who think this way suffer from a backlash. Which is.... not having their own shit together to make such demands. Plus, these same women get caught up in the "Shackin' Up Matrix". You know, gettin' involved with a man with "temporary money", and also wind up with a damn fool behind closed doors. LOL! Still in the end, there's no romance without finance.
I don't even know WHY this song was so controversial in the first place. I mean look at songs that talk about birthday sex, that have porno-looking videos, and all the unclassy B-ing & the H-ing goin on.
And why would you have a man in your life who you have to pay for with everything? How can you have a future with that guy? I don't go Dutch: I ain't in Amsterdam! Gwen Guthrie just paved the way for 'Call Tyrone', 'No Scrubs', and 'Bills, Bills, Bills' in the 90s.
Lol. As far as Amsterdam goes, the weed is great and the Red Light District is a sight to see! Lol....just kidding. Gwen Guthrie did pave the way for those other songs you mentioned. However, the subject matter in these songs will always lead to SOCIAL WARFARE between both genders. Especially between the BLACK WOMAN and BLACK MAN. Sometimes, such attitudes we have don't get us far in life. All the females I knew who was on such vibes live a life of mediocrity.
True....but only to a certain extent. With today's economy PERMANENT IS NOT SO PREVALENT these days. Might I add that when most people get married, they tend to mingle moneys and assets and don't have a backup plan. And if things fall apart, neither party has anything to show for their "marriage or struggle of marriage". I think they call that mess "community property"? Lol....then both parties have a problem with each other. Still, just have a backup plan even when you do the PERMANENT.
So, I can imagine that you tell women to fork up the cash also when payment is due, right, Marcus? Or do you just buy women all the time like prostitutes?
DO you prostitute yourself?
That's basically what this song advocates -- Prostitution!
Lol. To answer your question....the answer is no, I don't prostitute myself. Nor do I have the time to "trick off" with a chic....it's a recession out here! Lol....c'mon! I don't have time for that. I have powermoves to make, and I'm quite close to making them for that matter. And when I get to where I want to be in this precious life, my attitude still stay the same.
Recession or not, Marcus, the BEST power move ANY man can make is to recognize he is just as important as any woman and, more importantly, to STAND BY such a conviction.
Before you get to where you want to be in life, you must first recognize where you NEED to be -- loving enough of yourself as a man to not tolerate ANY KIND of female privilege over men.
And when you do get to where you WANT to be, you must CONTINUE to hold yourself in the highest of regard so you don't suffer later.
i don't feel like she's being a gold digger (in ref to description) she just wants someone that can meet her at the level she's at or above so she wont have to take care of a grown man that has no ambition

in case anyone misunderstood my point, no i dont expect a man to pay all my bills and rent. and pay for dinner. but i DO expect him to help me out. its called 50/50. and yes we should want a man to treat us like the queens we are. they'll just go to next woman and treat them way better.

@kmcarte10
this song was and still is a disgrace to our community. and OF COURSE BLACK PEOPLE ARE TOO DUMB TO REALIZE IT.

@ImalHasan if a song told you to jump off a bridge or shoot dope would you do it? We have brains for a reason, booboo.
fanofprotopic 1 year ago 2
@ImalHasan , If that is all you got out of this song and you truly feel that way about black women, then I have a bridge I want to sell you! And you can do whatever you want with it, maybe even jump off it into a cup of water!!!!!
chevygurl2007 1 year ago 2
@chevygurl2007
talking about working together through partnerships would have been a better message for our people. Like I said before, this song has influence black women to think of men only as objects of money earners. other women in America do not think like this nor do they have songs like this. THIS IS WHY OTHER WOMEN EXCEPT FOR BLACK WOMEN ARE MARRIED.

WRONG, Lamar.
A man has to know whether a woman uses protection or not, and if she doesn't, HE should go. Don't even THINK of having sex with her.

Jesus Christ, I wouldn't fancy being Gwen's fella. Seriously, how much would the food bill alone be? We're talking big bucks, people.

Most of the feminist standards, sing by women while trooping their colours; written by men.
Chejour 2 years ago
I used to enjoy this song as a kid. The song was controversial and insightful. However, the women I knew or know now who think this way suffer from a backlash. Which is.... not having their own shit together to make such demands. Plus, these same women get caught up in the "Shackin' Up Matrix". You know, gettin' involved with a man with "temporary money", and also wind up with a damn fool behind closed doors. LOL! Still in the end, there's no romance without finance.
REAL TALK!!
MarcusHardy2741 2 years ago 2
I don't even know WHY this song was so controversial in the first place. I mean look at songs that talk about birthday sex, that have porno-looking videos, and all the unclassy B-ing & the H-ing goin on.
And why would you have a man in your life who you have to pay for with everything? How can you have a future with that guy? I don't go Dutch: I ain't in Amsterdam! Gwen Guthrie just paved the way for 'Call Tyrone', 'No Scrubs', and 'Bills, Bills, Bills' in the 90s.
jrmetmoi 2 years ago
Real Talk
MarcusHardy2741 2 years ago 2
It won't be that way once a woman gets married to a man with the PERMANENT and if she never steps foot in the 'Shackin Up Matrix'.
jrmetmoi 2 years ago
True....but only to a certain extent. With today's economy PERMANENT IS NOT SO PREVALENT these days. Might I add that when most people get married, they tend to mingle moneys and assets and don't have a backup plan. And if things fall apart, neither party has anything to show for their "marriage or struggle of marriage". I think they call that mess "community property"? Lol....then both parties have a problem with each other. Still, just have a backup plan even when you do the PERMANENT.
MarcusHardy2741 2 years ago
So, I can imagine that you tell women to fork up the cash also when payment is due, right, Marcus? Or do you just buy women all the time like prostitutes?
DO you prostitute yourself?
That's basically what this song advocates -- Prostitution!
--The Final Justice
FinalJusticeMovement 2 years ago
Real Talk....which is My Final Justice
MarcusHardy2741 2 years ago
Recession or not, Marcus, the BEST power move ANY man can make is to recognize he is just as important as any woman and, more importantly, to STAND BY such a conviction.
Before you get to where you want to be in life, you must first recognize where you NEED to be -- loving enough of yourself as a man to not tolerate ANY KIND of female privilege over men.
And when you do get to where you WANT to be, you must CONTINUE to hold yourself in the highest of regard so you don't suffer later.
