Stunnning musicianship and piano playing in the old school 'grand' manner - which is not just a 'big' sound, but a keen sense of bringing out the full scope of these large architectural pieces. Almost makes me like Brahms, he's that good.
"Moscow in flames [again]... film at eleven." LOL.
He was a performer who changed you, that's for sure. Saw him once, at a solo recital at Carnegie in the early 80's. Beethoven sonatas (Waldstein, Appassionata) and Brahms, I think some Chopin for encores. Afterward I walked out onto 57th St. trembling all over, not wanting to talk or hear anything more. Nearly 30 yrs. ago. Never seen another performer who could appear before a very sophisticated, urbane audience, and basically own them before intermission...
This last month both Brahms Concertos (Arrau played the two of them on the same night in Moscow) were released on the Doremi label. Although the transfers were taken from vinyl rather than master tapes the sound is excellent; much better than what I've posted. I can't recommend them highly enough.
@kasyapa: really? this is much slower than Horowitz/Walter and Horowitz/Toscanini, and I say, much more reasonable of a tempo (though I know you disagree)

..doubtless claudio arrau was the greatest interpreter of the first brahms piano concerto.
obviously he practised pretty much for this outstanding event playing in russia,a country with such great musical tradition.
it´s really a firework and a great pleasure listen to such extraordinary artistical mastership.
the russian orchestra seems to be awed by arraus great art, because the tutti-entrance has been failed completely at the end! ;))
the french horn solo before sounds horrible..
