  • These people should get Wayne Dyer's Pulling Your Own Strings and take a close look at a chapter about quiet effectiveness. Saying because I think this relates to the matter at hand(not assuming it's automatically obvious).

  • "The cake used to be a lie, but then it took an EPICK ARROW TO THE KNEE, omg winsauce"

    - Virgins, 2012

  • "This troper quoted a meme and it was so awesome I always wanted to do that and oh god I'm dying alone"

  • "anime club"

    SAY NO MORE

  • hey hey GUYS you have to come see THIS COMEDIAN you GUYS he gets up on stage and quotes anime for an entire hour-long set! i think this could be a NEW COMEDIC REVOLUTION you guys!

  • Do you have something against That Guy With The Glasses, or do you have something against tropers liking That Guy With The Glasses?

  • @TheEranster Well, he isn't funny, and that kind of awkward stupid thing is what the bad tropes latch onto like a lactating breast. Which they have never latched onto.

  • 0:33

That troper deserved that, you don't yell out shit like that.

  • I've always wanted to say take me to your leader

  • @GenPhilosopher

    Because TVTropes.

  • The fuck is an anime club.

  • @calvinjluther The Sum of all Fears.

  • My god. After watching many of these episodes, I'm realizing that a lot of Troper Tales are simply people trying bland everyday scenes from their lives as something epic and worthy of being shared with the rest of the world.

  • 0:09

This is the type of person you stare at for a couple seconds, then immediately shun afterwards for the rest of your life.

"Memetic mutation" is idiotic and just plain stupid. It barely works on the internet (good for impressionable young kids), and it's not funny when its transferred into real life.

  • I quit the internet.

  • :( Was the internet EVER funny?

  • @SchedeenIndeed well, the basic concept of flame wars is kind of funny, but that's about it.

  • I said something popular on the internet in real life, I'm so cool and edgy and unique!

  • This is nothing! One time I was at a meeting and there was a tray of shrimp set out on the table. I was eating the shrimp and one of my coworkers said "the ocean called, they're running out of shrimp," so I said "yeah, well the JERK STORE called, they're running out of YOU!"

  • Also, presumably half of these are made up because the troper was only fantasizing about getting the chance to say that, and the other half are eagerly typed in less than twenty minutes after the fact because it's their Crowning Moment of fuck it not going to even finish that. I'm not sure which is more depressing.

  • This reminds me of those MiSTings from, say, 1999-2001 that were composed of nothing BUT references. Don't get me wrong, there were some awesome ones too, nobody's hatin' on Eye of Argon, but the good ones spawned countless trainwrecks from people that just thought they could say funny stuff someone else said at semi-appropriate times and it was funny.

I say this, of course, having done that very thing, but at least I was 13 at the time and thus legally mentally incompetent.

  • @Delcat42 lol

  • In case anyone reading these comments hasn't seen it yet, there is a TV Tropes page and a forum article on this series as well now.

And yes, they have latched on to the 'Plainwalker' characters and treated it seriously.

  • @Protectorett It is super serious man. The characters are the most god damn important part of the series! Who cares about these tropers or whatever!

  • @CrazyGoggs Fittingly, the actual tropers are not mentioned in the page, with one or two exceptions. They give a list of the episode, so SpiritTsunami and the like are mentioned by name, but no reference is made to the things anyone on the Troper Tales pages say. Also break the cutie was listed as one of the tropes. Also there are complaints on the forum about the voice work. Also other stupid things. I'd ask you to do it for an episode, but it's too short right now.

  • @Protectorett

You have to make an episode on it

  • @Skinnyoompalumpa Wait for it to grow. It must have more mockable content before it can be made into an episode. As it stands, this youtube comments page is larger than the article. We must be patient.

  • @Protectorett Patient for what? There's nothing creepy or laughable on the page, it's just documenting what pages are done and what tropes are invoked in the descriptions. Hell, if anything the page has an overwhelmingly positive slant towards the series.

  • @EponymousKid This is why we must be patient. You have to wait a while before anything worth an episode surfaces, but the early signs are there if you look hard enough.

  • @Protectorett Eh, I guess. I suppose it would make for a decent finale or something, if it, ahem, "matures" properly.

  • @EponymousKid You know what I'd love? If they made a Troper Tales page on the article and it was full of the people featured in these episodes writing a bunch of long winded essays defending their creepy behaviour and stupid comments. That would be an epic worthy of the final episode.

  • @Protectorett See, that would be pretty funny, but I also think it would be obvious trollbait.

Well, let me rephrase that: I, personally, would totally add a bunch of troll entries pretending to be, for instance, the kid who broke pencils or the girl who likes "coon tunes."

  • @EponymousKid Well, hopefully it'll be signed so we can track down and verify it. I don't know. It's all just our fantasies at this point anyway. It'll be fun if it does happen at any rate.

  • @Protectorett Goddamn....

  • Whenever someone says, "The cake is a lie" I want to burn down a children's orphanage.

  • In a nutshell:

I said an internet meme in public! Am I COOL YET GUIZ?

  • @EdmacZ

    EPICCCCCC WEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNN

  • This Troper mistakes mindlessly parroting catchphrases from pop-culture media as being witty and a sign of having an actual sense of humor.

  • @BERTMARCH See also: Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series.

  • heh...the cake is a lie, points if you get the reference...it's p. obscure, I know...heh..

  • @NeonPowerdisk

I liked Portal before it was mainstream, stop ruining it, you sheep

  • The unfunny... It ruptured my spleen.

  • this is like a Bartlett's of shit

  • HA HA, HE SAID OVER 9000, That's totally not an overused joke that isn't funny anymore.

  • They've been wrong about every single thing they've ever done. Including this thing. They're not smart, they're not scientists, they're not doctors, they're not even full-time employees. Where did their lives go so wrong?

See, there are a TON funnier and more applicable lines to use from Portal than fucking "The Cake is a Lie!"

  • @chaosd1

Ugh, that's what I hated about Portal. It became a ton more unbearable because all the quotes and jokes were ruined by unfunny retards, and frankly, GLADOS was the only thing good about it.

  • The worst part about the Goblin Hollow thing is that it's a very poorly drawn furry comic. Yeah, that's real primo stuff to steal from.

  • The sad fact is they go around through life just thinking of these quotes all week hoping to use it.

  • Whenever I watch one of these, I want to misquote Hitler:

"Anyone who sees and paints their hair green and their skin blue ought to be sterilized."

"By the skillful and sustained use of Troper Tales, one can make a people see even heaven as hell or an extremely wretched life as paradise."

"Demoralize the enemy from within by perversion, fanboyism, obnoxiousness, anime. This is the war of the future."

"If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be mocked."

  • I thought they all have imaginary friends/elves/dragons to talk with.

  • 0:17 She must also be a Deadpan Snarker. That piece of dialogue definitely belongs there - it's just as retarded as all the rest.

  • so they're spergin about being on the same level of meme spewing /b/tards except memes die and stuff.

  • Comment removed

  • @mastokeen @mastokeen While elsewhere on the same site, sperging about how 4chan is full of terrible, unoriginal, forum-invading mouth breathers. But it's okay when THEY use the memes.

  • "I wonder what the other team though hearing names like Ball... OF JUSTICE! or DRAGON FURY TOSS!"

Probably "Damn, that kid's retarded." or "I'm really gonna hit him in the face now."

  • WELL WELL BANG A GONG. IF IT ISN'T THE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHNIME CLOUGHB

  • They probably thought you escaped from the special ed room.

  • Hold the phone...

"Last friday at anime club, it was a friend's birthday party"?

Having your birthday party... at an anime club... Is there anything more pathetic than that? All I can think of is if on top of that, no one showed up, and there actually WAS a cake ready for all the guests to eat.

  • It's really REALLY difficult to maintain this position after watching this video, but I stand by the idea that references, when used conservatively, naturally (no changing tone to make clear that you are quoting something), in context, and with people who can appreciate it, can actually be ok.

Of course, even at their best, references are shit compared to actual jokes and quick wits.

  • @321cheeseman

References are okay when they actually fit the situation at hand and don't come across as excessive or forced. Done wrong, they can be absolutely excruciating.

  • @321cheeseman Not really. A good reference can make or break a situation and being able to come up with one on the mark is comparable to quick wits.

  • @SpraxIAKS Hey man, I said references can be good. I just think they pale in comparison to actual jokes you actually had to think of on your own.

"Hey, this is sort of like that thing in that movie" is never as good as humorous and original content.

  • I like how the Goblin Hollow guy realized how empty and meaningless his life was afterwards. I wonder if he slipped into a deep depression and started drinking his life away. Probably last seen in an alleyway, muttering "They didn't get the REFERENCE" to himself over and over again.

Then again, wouldn't be surprised if that was what the guy normally did anyway.

  • 0:29 why is benzai in such an anti-tgwtg video

  • thankyou for cutting away at t in tgwtg

  • That Guy With The Glasses is half the reason this shit exists. What a depressingly awful site to dedicate your Aspergers to.

  • @samuraikarasu

This. Fuck that site to hell

  • 3:12

almost every one of them had to do with the "anime babes that make me think the wrong thing" line

  • It's funny to think one of the editing tips every user sees while making an edit is basically "fuck memes, that shit's weak." If only any of these morons knew how to read...

  • It's GOBLIN HOLLOW Mom you wouldn't understand

    GOD

  • "Hey, it's that thing I'm aware of!" should never be mistaken for actual wit or humor.

  • @EponymousKid Yes.

  • The cake is a lie was NEVER funny.

  • @TheTimeConsumer916 It was until people besides the game started saying it.

  • @YamiAura I never really found it all that amusing. It was like "Sure, yeah, I know where that's from, do you want me to laugh?" and now it's just "nope"

  • @TheTimeConsumer916 In context it has a bit of humor, but people who quote it think humor is just quoting things people recognize.

  • @TheTimeConsumer916 I don't care what gender you are, I want to marry you for this because I thought I was the only one on the entire planet that thought this way.

  • @TheTimeConsumer916

    THANK YOU. SO MUCH.

  • @TheTimeConsumer916 It's not, I agree. I played the game. That was the least entertaining part of the whole damn thing. It was an obvious plot twist that had been heavily, heavily foreshadowed. I mean, I liked Portal, but "The cake is a lie!" never made me crack up.

  • @TheTimeConsumer916 The proper response to all utterances of it is: "Oh is it 2007 again?"

  • @TheTimeConsumer916

It was funny, IN PORTAL! Outside the game, NOT FUNNY!

  • @TheTimeConsumer916 I would say it was mildly amusing when you first played Portal. It was sorta clever when you first heard somebody reference it. Then it became Jesus Fucking Christ I would rather people go back to quoting fucking Borat.

  • @TheTimeConsumer916 It was funny the first time.

Then,it was acceptable the second time.

Then,at the 5463138743848th time, you want to kill all of the fanboys with a rusty sword.

  • @TheTimeConsumer916 Most internet memes were never funny.

  • @TheTimeConsumer916 Even Valve doesn't think it's funny. They hate it now.

  • 1:05 They were probably thinking "What a fucktard."

  • Music?

  • @CaptainHusky Sequence Erase by the Aquabats
