@Wyrdmead The first boats that brought the bluestones were of reed (we had a lot of it hence thatched cottages and iron age houses in the past) so quite light weight - see my blog for a picture. The later heaver stones as the Sarsens we know at Stonehenge then large wooden barges.
Avebuy was a port or harbour - hence the vast ditches - Silbury hill had a flat top as it was used as a beacon with a large fire on top to attract and guide ships - Britain's first light house.
