  • Like... hipsville...

  • The comic strip was apparently the subject of sustained protests by a number of fundamentalist groups for a while because it promoted "Darwinism".

It doesn't get much sillier than that.

  • I love this song! I loved this when I was a kid, and now I love it more!

  • I'm 63 and this my all time favorite song. It came out when I was 12.

  • I've thought the lead singer's voice is yabba dabba dabbado hot.

  • I always liked this song even though it is sort of silly. is Gary "Flip" Paxton any relation to Bill Paxton, the actor who was active from the early 80,s till----? maybe his dad?

  • my bf loves this song

  • Facebook Challenge:

    1. Find out the song that was #1 the week you were born. (Mine is July 11, 1960)

    2. Find that song on YouTube.

    3. Post that video on your FB wall without shame

  • @markd60 Sir Duke Stevie Wonder was #1 during June 2nd 1977 when I was born. Fortunately for me he is my favorite singer and he gives tribute to all the musicians who paved the way b-4 him. The ones I like the most especially Sir Duke (Duke Ellington)

  • fun!!!!

  • @triptoheaveandho Mine is either Elvis doing Teddy Bear, or Debbie Reynolds singing Tammy. (I'd definitely choose song A.)

  • This is one of the best Fun Songs ever. Thank you for posting memories.

  • Do you have any idea if this song is in the Public Domain?? Is it still copyright protected?????

  • Remember hearing this song on a CD I had when I was a kid called "Goofy Greats" haha.

I love this old music and I'm only 19.

  • @CarlChub A Cee Dee? We didn't have no Cee Dees when this song came out!

  • @markd60 Lol I sure hope you're being sarcastic...

  • There's a version of this song the Greaseman did based off of Bill McKinney's character from Deliverance.

  • look at those caveman go....

  • We all loved this song and did "The Stroll" to it. Great memories! Thanks!

  • he sure is hip, ain't he

  • Today Ali would be arrested for Domestic violence and the VIEW would destroy his character and protray him a bigger villian than G.W. PITA would have him indicted for animal abuse and his cave would be reposesed . Being a white male he would not be eligible for affirmative action or handouts he would committ suicide by standing the path of a Tyranasauras rex.

  • @wilcarr1 I'm a woman and have to agree with you there

  • THIS TAKES ME BACK TO MY SCHOOL DAYS

  • this is fantastic, haven't heard in so long

  • I havent heard this song in yrs, only reason why i remembered it, searched for it was b/c i was doing a search for planteriums, museums here in colorado. i was born 7 yrs after this song came out, i sure love it

  • It's in the soundtrack of Shag!!!

  • love it love it love it

  • its a cool song. lots of hep jive, beatnik then.early 60s , you hear the words "whats happening"." hes sure hep aint he?" Terms 60s hippies later used mid 60s late 60s. it was hep, beatniks, yippies, hippies. Liked the beat generation the best. The guy who wrote this was later a poet writer in the village N Y. He said they were smashed when they did it.

  • i have always liked this song, like music should be

  • dub dub dub .gocomics.com/alley-oop/

  • Shag! "Alley Oop! Oop, Oop, Oop, Oop!"

    i love this song! lol

  • My grandpa just showed me this song on his record player and he's 68

  • Three people are Neanderthals.

  • He "shore" is hip, ain't he? LMAO!!

  • oh so good remmber when.Yes ,I do.

  • I think this song is really cool.

  • Dante and the Evergreens sounded like they were trying very hard to imitate this. Hollywood Argyles are the best.

  • Anybody remember actually reading Alley Oop in the Sunday funnies?

Want a brain teaser try to think back to all the great old comics we have

lost over the years. The new ones are stupid, but not funny stupid.

How about Mandrake the Magician, Buz Sawyer, Gasoline Alley, Sad

Sack, Our Boarding House, Barney Google & Snuffy Smith, etc.

My faves were Lil Abner & Pogo, (both of which were political satire).

More American iconic culture disappearing into the past.

  • I find it amusing when people say the old analog music on Youtube sounds better. Don't they know what they are hearing is DIGITAL? Everything that goes over the internet is digital. Old music sounds better because back then they didn't process the hell out of it with compressors and limiters and crap like Autotune.

  • Olha o Brucutu

  • yea like hipsville!

  • NICE!!!!!!!!:D

  • This song scared me shitless when i was little.

  • wtf

  • These guys sing better, and the pictures from the comic books are WAY ahead.

  • JoeSzilagy, stop filling the heads of ignorant newbies with bullshit. The thing about analog is that it was/is full of second order distortion, which sounds nice. Yes, it sounds "nice" but it's not "accurate". It's not faithful to the original. Digital is a thousand times more accurate than analog. If you don't like a particular CD don't criticize digital, complain about the sound engineer who didn't know what he was doing.

Hollywood Argyles was a creation of my friend Kim Fowley

  • One of the dumbest songs ever written and I totally love it!

  • My first 45

  • this is back in the day ladies and gents.

  • Billboard's 70th #1 hit of the rock era. God bless!

  • this song creeps the shit outve me........ its just the tune

  • don't know who the hell dante and the evergreens are, but this is the original, the greatest, the one they stole

  • @anthonypepitoneVideo Then why did there version bomb on the charts, while Gary Paxton's far superior make it to Number One?

  • Paxton and Tammy Faye Bakker were an item back in the day (????)

  • By the way, this song was not written by Gary Paxton. It was written by my good friend, the brilliant Dallas Frazier, when he was nineteen years old. He went on to write many other hits, including 1967 CMA Song of the Year "There Goes My Everything" and the Oak Ridge Boys classic "Elvira". Dallas is alive and well and still writing great music. Still funny, too.

  • In 1970 I was young and strong, ran into Ally Opp at a bar in San Jose Ca !!! He almost kicked my ass tiil his wild cat thoung fell off!!!!

  • A #1 hit for The Hollywood Argyles in the summer of 1960. This comic strip is still going today.

  • Nice.....

  • Used to have the single when I was a kid, and played it all the time. Sounded better. Is it true that analog sounds better than digital? Vinyl better than CD? For one thing, it sounded warmer, fuller and the percussive "clink" wasn't nearly so dominant. But the vocals still sound great.

  • @JoeSzilagy Posting it on youtube affects the sound quality, too.

  • @DayGloClam Either way, it's great that you took the time and effort to post it, and make the video. Thank you! By the way, do you do requests? I thought of a few other great songs from way back then. For example, "Because They're Young", or "Rebel Rouser" by Duane Eddy, or "Oh Little One"/"Burning Bridges" by Jack Scott

  • @DayGloClam Hi again, just looked at your channel and you like early British rock too! How about something a bit rare like "Everybody Knows" by the Dave Clark Five? Or "I like it Like That"? "Over, Under, Sideways, Down by The Yardbirds? Anyway, keep up the great work!

  • @JoeSzilagy yes!! analog is way better,my brother has a recording studio, and he still uses analog, and puts out some bad ass recordings..if you like you can e-mail me and I can put you in touch with him...he can give you his sight so you can hear some recording he did..don't get me wrong, this comment wasent put here for sales.

  • @JoeSzilagy Vinyl is way better than cd if it is in good shape played on a decent turntable with good needle and cartridge. Digital only records from 20 hz to 20 khz where as vinyl is full range giving more "spaciousness" and better separation remember we are analog creatures not digital, so anything recorded in a method that is natural to us will always be more convincing

  • @JoeSzilagy Those old recordings sound way better than today !! Analog is far superior to digital in my opinion!

  • @JoeSzilagy

I was about 3, and my mother said I played that, and only that, over and over to the point she thought she would lose her mind hearing it so much. She actually had dreams about ole "Alley Oop". Sadly, part of our burned, and that record was lost in the fire.

  • @alwellus sorry for your loss i too had a house fire as a kid lost toys, records and sadly our baby pictures. Just honor the memories and it will always be with you in spirit ;)

  • If memory serves me, think I saw them perform this (lip sync) on the Lloyd Thaxton Show in L.A. Could be wrong. Anybody confirm or correct?

  • when i wrestled that big guy out of the bar--i thought of this song-it was a good time by the way--the cave man was happy when he got up!

  • Fantastic !!! Ty !! not just for the song, but for the video of the most amazing comic strip Characters , that none of of have ever seen , just heard about !!! Bravo , you brought a whole bunch of Joy here !!! Hey , not extintic !! thanks to you !!! ty , DayGloClam !!!

  • @yukonnahanni You're welcome! I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

  • Fantastic !!!

  • because of this song i decided t name my cat Alley Oop.

  • Why won't it send?

  • You may not believe what this song REALLY means. Find out at the blog SongSense.info. Seriously, I'm not trying to sell anything.

  • Look at that caveman goooooooo!!!

  • love this song, and this is coming from a guy that likes death metal and metalcore music

  • I'm envious. Where did you find an Alley Oop figure, doll whatever its called, and the red tin it goes in?

  • @BrandonTxOthor Unfortunately I don't have it. It's just a picture I found on google image search.

  • Gary Paxton who wrote and sings this song needed a name for the group real fast so he happened to be on the corner of Hollywood and Argyle, thus the name of the group. Gary Paxton was also Flip of Skip & Flip who sand Chery Pie and It Was I, two more great songs....

  • @kennbix Gary also owned Gar-Pax, the label which had the hit Monster Mash. Gary produced that. He also produced a record for a friend of mine named Don Hinson, Monster Jerk and Riboflavin Flavored Non Carbonated Poly Unsaturated Blood. Gary also produced a great record for Roger Christian called Big Bad Hodad. Gary did get a Grammy for some Gospel recordings later.

  • hi, used to have this on a 45 back when but the flip side was a cool tune too, anyone know the name of the tune on the flip? bonne_to_be_wild@yahoo.com, thanks

  • @BONNEVILLAIN2012 It was called Sho know A Lot About Love and you can find it on youtube.

  • Ditn't the Hollywood Argyles also do a song in '61? Som'm to do with birds? I remember hearing that (catchy) song back then and it sounded like the Hollywood Argyles - well, at least, the lead singer. Yes, "sonny" I'm that OLD - gumming on my Graham cracker with my warm milk as I text. Oh my rhumatism! LOL.

  • This is for you David!! Enjoy! I have not heard from you for quite sometime!! If you have been sick..this song will make you smile!!

    Hugs,Haley

  • finally!! I've been waiting 3 years for this

  • Like, hipsville man.

  • Fabulous stuff, brings back some great memories, this song started a bit of a trend that went for some time, I think Alley Oop married the Pink Poker dotted pollywampus didn't he.

  • It is too bad this song is categorized as a novelty song. It is well constructed and easy to dance to. The back up vocals rival Elvis or Ricky Nelson.

  • Dang, I remember this song from Radio Disney!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cause he's a mean motor scoota and a bad go getta...

  • @parkman35 He's a mean motor scooter and BEAR go getter. LOL

  • @nelsondowney I thought it was "bad go getter"

  • best valentine ever

  • Dinny is the ultimate pet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How could anyone rate this less than 5 stars? Loved the song from the Hollywood Argyles, and the accompanying vid is great. Enjoyed seeing Alley Oop again.

  • Thanks.

  • @czekehazi This song is well constructed. The back up vocals are excellent and rival anything done by Elvis or Ricky Nelson.
