This game isn't difficult, it's just unforgiving. You play by the game's rules, you learn them, then follow them. It punishes the weak, impatient, ignorant, and perhaps even stupid. But when you learn that this isn't "your game," where you think you can do whatever you want, kill whatever you want, and go wherever you want with no worry (Skyrim), then you will finally see what Dark Souls is trying to teach you, and that is discipline.
I have to admit, I stumbled upon your playthrough and quite ashamed to stumble upon this and find out you gave up, generally because I enjoyed watching regardless of how good or bad you did. (I enjoy watching the evolution of players throughout playthroughs. See if they ever learn, get even more frustrated, etc)
Although, all irrelevant now as you gave up but then ACTUALLY have the nerve to rate and review it. All I hear in this video is more complaints then anything. Sigh, Damn shame.
He should return to this and look more often at the comments of his playthrough. If he had, he'd have known to bring a ton of moss clumps, knew there was a nearby bonfire and upgraded his gear, he wouldn't have gotten as frustrated.

Any fan of his would know that when things don't work out for Phil, he blames it on some other worldly flaw instead of admitting that he plain and downright sucks ass at the game. I'd advise for him to go ahead and finish toughing it out to the bonfire he quit right next to rather than bother using his Master Key to skip the bits of Blighttown he went through the trouble of beating (along with the Depths and Capra). It can't be said enough that he was actually at the 'end of the tunnel' and just sat there to rant in despair before running to his death (away from the bonfire).

Phil approached the game in such a different manner, it was sort of like a challenge run from his first playthrough. If he wouldve done things differently in the game he wouldnt think its so hard. When I saw his playthrough he did so many things that were not supposed to be done and at the end it made his playthrough even harder in the long run. Of course, he wouldnt know what to do or what not to do, but I just wish he would make a second char and give it a second shot.

I did however feel like it had the potential to be something really different from other games and had I listened to someone like you I would probably have missed out on what have become one of my favorite games ever. my first play-through took a little under 15 hours my ng+ took around 5 so 80 hours really? no i have not played demon souls nor did i use a guild or wiki i explored, talked to npc multiple times to see if they said anything different, if an enemy completely owned me despite my best efforts i took another path and lo and behold i found where im suppose to go. instead of constantly bitching and whining about controls or how unfair the game was i learned from my mistakes and beat the game.

the game is GOOD, it tells you the basics, and while you do have to search for some stuff and figure it out on your own, the world map isn't insanely huge to the point where you'd feel lost on what to do next.

The thing is, what's unique about it IS the difficulty. I like the gameplay of Dark Souls because I like the gameplay of other Hack n' Slash games, except that I feel like they're just mindlessly clicking the same button, and when they increase the difficulty level it's just by putting more enemies on the screen at once.
I want a game that will make me think, which is what I feel this game provides. Just that little modifier on a genre I already like.

i ended up not beating it aswell, but i got sl 712 on demons souls.. its the fact that any slip can kill you, even if its the beginning levels and ur sl 100, plus the multiplayer is not nearly as good as demons souls because i could never fking connect with any of my friends, and connecting with random people barely worked. the only place that was good was the forest, so all in all this game doubled the bullshit from ds and almost ruined the multiplayer. just my opinion.

I agree with this completely. There's a hardness is having to learn something, or using basic skills you know to overcome something, and getting one shot through a block that the game told you that you're supposed to use. Killing the same thing over and over again for hours because you got killed from something you had no way of knowing is stupid.
I'd say other than the difficulty, the selling point is precise controls, strategic combat more advanced than skyrim and getting a great feeling of leveling up that comes from beating lots of enemies.

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are awesome games because its challenging. This game does not hold your hand like other Role Playing Games.. I had a awesome time playing both of the games.
Whenever one of my friends wants to try Dark Souls but thinks it's too hard, I show them how even DSP was able to make progress despite how terrible he was, and then they realize it's actually not hard. This game really has no more penalty for dying than a Mario game.

@MRQ1257 I can't blame him I got really bored as well, and hell I was playing 3 other games at the same time, and Skyrim was just around the corner, and I was not gonna invest time into it, if the game had a difficulty setting, your character didn't look like a burn victim, you could save any were, and there wasn't near as much backtracking and grinding, then it would be a pretty epic game.
@LoryuoRaioneru No i'm a pretty hard core gamer, and besides I beat it already any way, but honestly I was just not willing to invest a lot of time into it, I was playing Rage Dead Island and Batman Arkham City as well so I went back into about January put in a hundred hours and beat the damn thing, last boss a bit of a let down but the 3 kings or whatever thy were called was hard as hell.
@Nihilist9784 Nowhere in the manual does it tell you to how to purchase magic, equip it, have the necessary stats to use it, and get a talisman. This is explained in the manual for demon's souls, not Dark Souls. If you listened to what Phil said you would have known what I meant.

I see your point, it is very unforgiving and you are supposed to figure it out for yourself. Unfortunately you missed out on the multiplayer aspect. If you were to check out the online play you would find that when helping out a person you are given a sort of free trial of each part of the game. You get to see all the traps and all of the monsters before you actually face them in your own world. As an added bonus, if you die in another person's world you don't lose any souls. Try playing online.

I have not played Dark Souls, but I have Demon's Souls. I never got frustrated when I die in that game. Other games, yeah, but not that one for some reason.
Basically, you need to play smart, think, and be patient with every enemy encounter, no matter how big or small. Without doing the above successfully, you will be punished for it, and it seems that was what DSP was having trouble with, even at the beginning tutorials. Either way, just like Demon Souls, Dark Souls isn't for everyone, but if anyone is looking for a gaming challenge, these games are definitely looking into.
Also, every enemy and every boss has its weakness, and you always have a strategy that will work. You might not see it at first, not the second time, maybe not even the third time, but you experiment untill you discover that one weakness and that one strategy. And after that, it feels so rewarding. You accomplished a difficult task, and the game knows you have.
What I've learned from Dark Souls is not to rush in like an amateur. From the very first boss battle I missed the plunging attack and was beaten fairly easily, but then I learned from my mistake and tried it again. I haven't gotten too far into the game, and I really wouldn't call myself a hardcore gamer, but I've been enjoying it thus far.

You didn't experiment with multiplayer, neither co-op or pvp, and you didn't make it past Blighttown! I respect that you still gave it an 8, putting aside your considerable personal bias, but you've got to understand that the rewards from this game come from getting good at it. You have to struggle to get there, and you don't notice it, but what took you hours the first time you play will take you 20 minutes later, and the only that has changed is you.
I LOVE dark souls. And I admit I suck at video games and even I beat it and have an ok pvp record. Mostly losses but whatever I have fun.
I love everything about dark souls including the people who bitch about it online for being too hard. Haha! cry more ya losers! The only thing sorta bad about dark souls is that it ruined Skyrim for me because IMO Skyrim sucks compared to dark souls and I stopped playing it after about 50 hours and went back to dark souls.
DS vets, and Dark Souls players like myself know that the beauty of the game is feeling helpless and not knowing what to do at first. But later on, becoming a unstoppable badass that can breeze through the game in no time.

He just mastered the hallways and Dodge almost all of the enemys and The bosses Most of them he already knew the pattern so it was easy and the last one he just parried.

my first play-through took a little under 15 hours my ng+ took around 5 so 80 hours really? no i have not played demon souls nor did i use a guild or wiki i explored, talked to npc multiple times to see if they said anything different, if an enemy completely owned me despite my best efforts i took another path and lo and behold i found where im suppose to go. instead of constantly bitching and whining about controls or how unfair the game was i learned from my mistakes and beat the game.

i'm not a RPG master or anything close to it, and managed to get my platinum in the game.
the game is GOOD, it tells you the basics, and while you do have to search for some stuff and figure it out on your own, the world map isn't insanely huge to the point where you'd feel lost on what to do next.

This seems like a fair review, I suppose.
The thing is, what's unique about it IS the difficulty. I like the gameplay of Dark Souls because I like the gameplay of other Hack n' Slash games, except that I feel like they're just mindlessly clicking the same button, and when they increase the difficulty level it's just by putting more enemies on the screen at once.
I want a game that will make me think, which is what I feel this game provides. Just that little modifier on a genre I already like.

i ended up not beating it aswell, but i got sl 712 on demons souls.. its the fact that any slip can kill you, even if its the beginning levels and ur sl 100, plus the multiplayer is not nearly as good as demons souls because i could never fking connect with any of my friends, and connecting with random people barely worked. the only place that was good was the forest, so all in all this game doubled the bullshit from ds and almost ruined the multiplayer. just my opinion.

There's a hardness is having to learn something, or using basic skills you know to overcome something, and getting one shot through a block that the game told you that you're supposed to use. Killing the same thing over and over again for hours because you got killed from something you had no way of knowing is stupid.

I see your point, it is very unforgiving and you are supposed to figure it out for yourself. Unfortunately you missed out on the multiplayer aspect. If you were to check out the online play you would find that when helping out a person you are given a sort of free trial of each part of the game. You get to see all the traps and all of the monsters before you actually face them in your own world. As an added bonus, if you die in another person's world you don't lose any souls. Try playing online.

Basically, you need to play smart, think, and be patient with every enemy encounter, no matter how big or small. Without doing the above successfully, you will be punished for it, and it seems that was what DSP was having trouble with, even at the beginning tutorials. Either way, just like Demon Souls, Dark Souls isn't for everyone, but if anyone is looking for a gaming challenge, these games are definitely looking into.

You might not see it at first, not the second time, maybe not even the third time, but you experiment untill you discover that one weakness and that one strategy. What I've learned from Dark Souls is not to rush in like an amateur. From the very first boss battle I missed the plunging attack and was beaten fairly easily, but then I learned from my mistake and tried it again. I haven't gotten too far into the game, and I really wouldn't call myself a hardcore gamer, but I've been enjoying it thus far.

He tells them that it's a very frustrating game that they may not enjoy unless they want to put in time replaying things over and over. Big difference.

@mjc0961 well, if u really did listen to his words and idk if u played and beat this game, i have, this guy doesnt even use common sence, he says the game doesnt tell u how to use spells and miracles yet...on the decription of a basic catalyst it says to equip catalyst and spell and to learn spell if not already. thats just 1 of the flaws in his comments, but it just proves that he shudnt have made this review, people will belive its a bad game if they r a big fan of him also the game isnt long

@bikermark666 And yet you're completely oblivious to the flaws in your own comments. Read this really slowly in your mind so it sinks in:
1. He did not say the game was bad.
2. He said the game takes a long time because you have to die a lot and replay a lot of sections, not because it's long in terms of content.
I mean really, are you actually that stupid? You keep saying his comments on the game are wrong, while every comment you make about this video is wrong.

Well, I watched a few episodes of a guide, it was my first game to play on Xbox (apart from the wii) and Dark Souls was really simple for me...
