  • Owwww !!! His pad is definitely hot

  • does he use his fingers in german grip?... any helps appreciated

  • Comment removed

  • At this point Travis Barker is a MEME, he's no longer a drummer.

People write comments about this guy "just because" it's now normal?

He's become the Just Beiber of You Tube Drum comments.

It's amazing how such and average drummer has turned into the go-to-guy for bashing and praise.

  • I've spent last 8 years trying to play clean rolls accentuating the second hit and I still can't make it the way Jim does it. Music is so weird, it seems like the more you practice, the more you find those little details that you have to pulish in order to become a true profesional. And it's only drummers like Jim that can help you through all that stuff! R.I.P Jim

  • @camoacu True. I had a teacher that told me practicing this type of stuff the "wrong way", can actually reduce your precision and time. He'd make me stop practicing something, as soon as he saw I had gotten it. I thought that was weird, but he'd just say "once your extremities know how to do it correctly, what's the point in you questioning whether they do or not?" :-)

  • A great technician and teacher.

  • OOWWWWWWWWWWW!

  • This guy reminds me of Christopher Walken.

  • Call it whatever name you will but this technique is still relevant as was everything these cats did. Brain mantia had a section on this on his dvd...abd he's a total different style of drummer. Billy rhymer from Dillinger was doing this at a clinic. Gotta keep Learning.

  • OW!!!

  • I agree with what he is saying here BUT, I'm one of those drummers who plays into the head (like right through the fricking floor) on my snare drum and it works for me. I play mostly single stroke rolls though. So what I'm saying is this isn't the only way to approach rolls. Check out my solos on here (my tributes to Buddy Rich).

  • really great

  • One question to all you guys. Why these are called "open rolls"? What distinguishes them from other rolls?

  • @ChemoTherapy87

There are also closed rolls (or buzz rolls), these involve many bounces per down movement of the hand. In an open roll (when executed right) you can clearly hear both hits per hand movement. A closed roll only gives a buzz sound and the strikes are less pronounced. Perhaps you recognise the closed roll as the ``circus roll''.

  • @sikory Ah, so this is the idea. Thanks for quick and accurate response!

  • @ChemoTherapy87

Open refers to the beginning and ending part of a drum rudiment. He is discussing the 1st Rudiment called "long roll" Every rudiment starts slow, evenly/gradually speed up, hold the fastest part for a moment, then slow the rudiment back down (ie open it back up again) The accents are when the long roll is slow and should gradually disappear as you speed up and the reappear when you slow it back down.

  • dude reminds me of Christopher Walken

  • Bloody freak!

  • This guy is The Man.

  • His face.. pure focus

  • Comment removed

  • @AceDrumm3r You practise accenting the second stroke to even the roll out. As you speed it up the accent becomes less defined. It also stops you from digging the stick into the head.

  • Holy fuck what a boss.

  • i wonder if doing those excercies would help u with ur dynamics with open rolls.

  • After watching this video, I kinda finally got it.

  • I was fortunate enough to study with Mr. Chapin on a few occasions several years ago. A total class act, great guy, passionate about teaching. Let me tell you, guys like that, especially in the music biz, are few and far between. He is missed....

  • fuck hes good. i really need to practice rudiments

  • Also called Mama Dada!

  • SUPREME RULER OF THIS UNIVERSE !

  • Thank you for posting this video! It really helped!

  • no more travis barker compered with this master drummers for god sake !

  • this Travis Barker meme is ridiculous. Every drum video I see has him mentioned on the comments. Enough! He's cool, but for fuck's sake!!

  • Why does everybody mention Travis Barker under Mr. Chapin's videos? Is he somewoh connected with him? Or just the only popular drummer in America?

  • travis barker made two accounts to vote this video and after that he felt he should practice more instead of watching youtube videos :P

  • OW!

  • "a preeetty powerfull open roll"...haha, fantastic !!! - thank for uploading...

  • If I could do this when I reached his age I would die happy.

  • that man's skill is quite terrifying

  • i wish i had this guy as my drum teacher that would be awesome man

  • Beautiful. Precise.

  • Just practice your doubles on a floor Tom gradually picking up the tempo(gradually)!!! On your biggest Tom that is. Then you'll have the best doubles possible.

  • So in this video , what you do is

    (1) tap the first stroke letting the stick drop.

    (2) the stick comes back naturally (leave your hand down) and then catch small rebound

    (3) You are now in perfect position after the "catch" for the secondary FULL STROKE. Throw the stick back down and LEAVE YOUR HAND DOWN, let the stick bounce back and catch

    (4) you are now in position for the low stroke throw/catch

  • The Moeller Technique is well worth the exploration & study it takes to execute & master. When learning the Moeller Double Stroke it's very important to stay at a slow tempo for a long time, making sure you over exagerate the secondary accent. As the tempo increases to a certain level you will feel the accent wanting to fade, allow this to happen & before you know it, your rolls will be supercharged with an increase in acceleration you have never known. It works beleive me, you won't regret it.

  • it makes me sick to watch a great video by Jim Chapin only to look to my right and see the featured video is expertvillage telling me "how to play a drum roll"

  • I'm glad i can do it this fast now lol

  • It really seems funny to me how he is coming from the crushed rolls (and I assume buzz as well) and the double stroke is what seem likes the more advanced rudiment, when I come from a Drum Corp back round, so applying double strokes to my set or concert is easy, but I really have to apply my self to get smooth buzz or crush rolls.

Just goes to show the diversity of drumming and percussion.

  • It's funny how he talks like he expect people to be able to do this XD

  • i would love to do the double rolls with the jazz/american style! but damn!! its hard!

  • coool

  • My ears have been blessed

....now let's get that secondary pop fellas

  • this guy has awesome tichniques in drumming, but anyways I learned from you, thanks man!

  • these guys are awesome. i just think up on my rolls. through the roof.

  • Legendary drummer. I love the sound and the feel of double stroke rolls.

  • I love the sound and the feel of EVEN double stroke rolls lol. Listening to uneven rolls (such as my own :[ ) just disgusts me.

  • haha! I hear ya man. My own double stroke rolls used to disgust me too! I finally incorporated the technique Jim is describing here.... made a world of a difference.

  • great

  • Great Jim.....RIP.....

  • I... Am not worthy

  • I've tried doing this and I always feel the need to make the first hit an accent and not the second hit like he's explaining. And even if I do get it down, how is he able to pull away so fast on the upstroke when he gets up to tempo like 1:30

  • He makes some sort of reversed motion; he comes down with the stick pointing down, when it hits the pad, he pulls the stick up and makes a louder stroke, ergo the accent is omn the second stroke

  • @jkman10 im not yet really good at this yet, but ive noticed that you can do this with little less tempo easily by doing the first stroke with really loose grip on the stick, so it gets nice bounce but not that loud sound, and then instantly when the stick hits your pad try to quickly squeeze your fingers to tight fist (still keeping the grip between your thumb and the first finger pretty loose and relaxed). And then practice to make your fingerst faster.

  • @jkman10

Think about the Gladstone stroke. IF you don't know of it , learn about it. All of this stuff is inter-related. Gladstone is simply pushing down with the hand, letting the stick rebound while leaving your hand down. Once you get that motion down, you will see it's not your hand lifting the stick, but it's the stick rebounding and *you catching the stick when it's well back in your hand*. gladstone.

  • @jkman10 Here's the key.,First you need to relax your arm muscles as much as you can .,You have to use your entire arm up to the elbow .Flap your wings slightly so to speak ,

  • @jkman10

    Practice this:

    R lL rR lL rR

^^ lead with an accented right but only one note. Practice for 10 minutes a day VERY SLOWLY and deliberately, you want to get the motion down perfectly , otherwise you'll never get it up to speed fluidly

  • @jkman10 i think its down to his fingers aswel partly. i dont know if your doing it like this already, but if you imagine your pinching the stick (loosely) and allow the stick to fall, you then pull it back up with your other 3 fingers. this is mainly for match grip but you can see his right hand doing something similar to this. when i got taught this it really helped with my speed and control, also use positivelybored's technique.

if your already doing this im sorry for waisting your time =D

  • just love the skills any drummer has to offer dudes!

  • I'm surprised!

  • you should shut up

  • This line of conversation is pretty hard to follow because I wasn't completely agreeing with either of you. YouTube's pretty confusing. Let's just see if he actually bothers to say something in response to all this. Probably not.

  • ok what the hell travis barker got to with this video, i dont see he him in it or any statements relating to him anywhere???

  • I was talking more towards the troll who thinks he's a pioneer and has doesn't aspire to be as good as these people. But, because you mention it, consider Travis' fanbase. If he didn't beat the shit out of his equipment, his fans wouldn't like him. My teacher was a student of Chapin's, and when he plays whatever will pay the rent, but plays amazing jazz on his own. Even if Travis doesn't, I doubt he'd look at these videos and think he can do better.

  • I see all these trolls coming here talking about Travis Barker being better than X, Y, and Z. I don't even think HE thinks he's better than them. To his credit, he knows his instrument and is able to reach an audience that these classics would not, but if you don't think Travis idolized them or at least learned something from their techniques, then you must not know much about percussion.

  • great!

  • @travisBrulzz Dude! Are you kidding me! Travis couldn't play half of this shit. Apparently you know nothing about music. The only thing Travis has over this guy is the ability to hit as hard as he can, which any dumbass could pull off

  • He makes it look so easy, but it's not! RESPECT!!

  • Thank you Jim for leaving a legendary drum hand technique video. You are missed.

  • Kool vid..R.I.P.

  • when he died???

  • July 4th of this year.

  • this guy was good

  • RIP

  • RIP Jim...

  • jim chapin rocks his been doing before you where born travis barker yuck i respect old school drummser like peter criis eric carr and ringo starr and jim chapin keep rocking in heavan jim

  • ringo starr was a terrible drummer... in an interview with the beetles, they were were asked "so you guys must think ringo is the best drummer in the world, right?" and the reply was "hell, he's not the best drummer in the band"

  • im sorry i miss quoted John Lennon's classic answer to the question "Is Ringo Starr the best drummer in the world?" which was in fact "I don't even think he is the best drummer in the Beatles."

you find it your self before your so quick to accuse me of making shit up. i'll be honest the most of the Beatles songs wouldn't have worked without Ringo's style of drumming, but is terrible compared to the rest of the drummers you mentioned. and i have been playing for little under 10 years, so fuck u

  • Ringo wasn't that great of a drummer, but The Beatles pwn.

  • love the outfit, love the techniques and phrases. RIP old man

  • I know you people aren't on here comparing Travis Barker to this man. That should not even be a discussion. Travis Barker can come nowhere near this man. Seriously people Travis is good but he is not good enough to be compared to Jim Chapin. Travis has never done anything to impress me. I bet you all think Travis is as good as Buddy Rich too. LOL!!! Think again because you're wrong!

  • 1:50 god never though of that snapping sound, god damn, gonna use that for fills an shit.....

  • at 1.50 when he says here's another way to do it-am i right in the fact that the second stroke is thje weaker so opposite to the one technique befroe hand?

  • he died on 4 july 2009 RIP

  • oh he isnt, my bad

  • lmao hes probably not alive anymore

  • he actually died very recently and it was a hit to the drumming world. awesome drummer, was an ambassador for the moeller technique and was the last surviving student of moeller himself.

  • Travis faster than Jim Chapin? You're kidding, right??

  • hahahah ...young people....they're quite funny? dont' you agree?? ahah

  • I'm young...but I certainly appreciate this man WAY more than I could ever appreciate Travis Barker.

  • of course I used a clichè....Fortuantely there are also young people like you that are mature enough to understand what they are talking about ;-)

  • I can definitely understand where you are coming from though. Many people my age can't really tell talented musicians from mediocre ones any more...Thankfully I was put in the right direction by a handful of people and I got interested in musicianship early on.(:

  • These are INSTRUCTIONAL videos. Meant to INSTRUCT. Not to show off. And no, we DON'T know how great travis is on a set. Any experienced drummer or any experienced musician at all can tell you that all the hype over Mr. Barker is well over done and he is indeed very average.

  • Thank you so much! Thats exactly how I feel, I just appreciate Jim way more. Travis is good too, nothing against him, but I definitely appreciate Jim way more too.

  • @doublebassdrummer1 coz u havnt seen travis barker s 1 handed rolls dumbass travis is a fucking god deuchnozel

  • Travis Barker's one handed rolls?

Are you daft? His one handed rolls are nothing remarkable

  • @doublebassdrummer1 Travis Barker is over rated

  • @doublebassdrummer1 - You can learn something from just about any drummer, even if it's how not to do a particular thing. Travis Barker contributes to this learning process too. Chapin, however, is a real master of technique and what he has to share can benefit every drummer in some way. I don't think it's fair to compare the two; they are very different. Take something from each drummer you encounter and make it your own. No matter what, tho', you have to put in the time to be good.

  • @doublebassdrummer1 Excellent. You are well on you way to becoming a musician!

  • @doublebassdrummer1 have you ever herd of travis ? oviously not dumbass if you did youd know trhat he can own this guy on a fucking drum set this guy is only good at playing on fucking snaires that sound wierd

  • @travisbarkerizdaman HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARH. "Fucking snaires that sounds weird". Dude please, people like Travis have much to learn from people like Chapin. You need to learn how to spell "Snare" correctly, as well as realize what the hell a practice pad is.

  • @travisbarkerizdaman wake up--jim chapin is/was the worlds foremost drum authority....

  • @doublebassdrummer1 It's strange how everybody is talking about Travis all of the time isn't it? Every type of video to do with music; his name crops up.

  • You're retarded.

  • If you can, you could ask to travis himself...you could be surprised from his answer ^_^

  • He created a new generation of drummers, contrary to travis, who managed to became only a commercial puppet, whose stupid fans ruin his memory. Pathetic comment of yours

  • travisBrulzz and you talk too much for a fetus, young twerp.

  • is he in his office?

  • No, man!!! "Travisbarker4prez" again!!!!

Say to my mother that I love her!

    Goodbye, cruel world!!!!!!!!!

    [POW]

  • you are a fucking moron. And by your user name its clear that you'd happily swallow about 9 loads from that useless waste of skin. Listen, leave your bedroom, and go to a few clubs and see that even the local cats in your community are better drummers than travis barker. That guy is all image. And its really really sad that you dont know who Jim Chapin is.

  • Dude, travis is good, he has great power/control. He re-did soldier boy and it sounds tits. Check out his snare drum solo in the studio....good power and definitely using Moeller method.

  • I don't discount that he's a good drummer. But some of my students are good drummers too. His 'soldier boy' remix is boring. Its just him bopping his stupid skull up and down and laying a hard-ass groove. I've seen guys playing tin cans at the subway that have more talent in their bucket-for-a-bassdrum than Travis. I guess what i'm trying to say is, I as a drummer resent someone like him because he sold his soul to reality TV. It's all image. There are too many guys that should be in his place.

  • Get over yourself....you prefer Travis played drums only in his basement and avoid getting paid. No offence, but you are a moron if you think people sell their soul to go on reality TV. It's called making a living, getting paid. Check out his snare solo in studio, you will see he is a shredder. If one never sells themselves, that's usually because they have nothing to sell...no image, no SKILL, no showmanship. You are making it obvious you don't intend on working as a drummer.

  • Name me one person that pulled the reality TV show card for anything more than money and quick fame. I admit, its ok if someone as desperate as Kim Karadshainianan(?) does it because she's just lazy and wants quick money. But when a musician does it, it's just a slap in the face to all of us. His TV show was a disgrace, and if he had based it solely on his music, then i would have applauded him. But he didn't. Hence, he sold is soul to reality TV.

  • Don't know your living situation/job, don't care, not my business. Answer this truthfully.....would you go on a TV show? (for whatever reason), sign a contract saying you will be paid 1 million dollars guranteed....lets even say 200k.

Now you are going to say no because you have some kind of honor or won't "sell your soul". I think you are looking at things the wrong way. Good luck to you.

  • Money and quick fame are good things IMO, beats flipping burgers at McD's.

  • I don't want to go off topic here, but please don't ever use the phrase "sounds like tits" ever again. Thanks.

  • Travisbarker4prez: You really need to stop sniffing glue.

  • You can't even spell "snare" My God. You are in no position to be talking about this. No, Travis Barker most certainly does not have better "snair" chops than Mr. Chapin. Guys like you embarass yourself when you say stuff like that.

  • Seriously! What is it with these people and their stinkin Travis Barker. Yeah he's good but Travis cannot touch this man in the drumming world. Jim Chapin is way better of a drummer than Travis. I'm with ya bro! It's usually the beginners that like Travis so much anyway. It'll take time but they will broaden their horizon a little more in the world of drums.

  • hahaha you cunt

  • R.I.P

  • He was the man ): I have his jazz book, R.I.P Jim chapin!! OMG everybody is dying this days what's happening!!??

  • Oh man!!!!!!! I didn't know he passed. He is total old school and I just watched his DVD last night. There are so many great quotes and he is very wise! "You must look at them in disbelief"...."Pretend you have some heavy crank case oil on your finger tips" lol

    Man was a true shredder!!!

  • Haha I've been drumming for years, and before even seeing this video I have been doing this and pretending it was hot! So ironic.

  • he was a great man may he r.i.p :'(

  • R.I.P Jim Chapin.

  • Lol, very good exercise, but if the pad is hot I can play with my sticks with no pain!

  • ...But not with your Fingers! And that´s what he meant... Just think about the Second Stroke (with the Stick) as painful, so...you trie to get the Stick away from the Pad-Surface...

    Simple!

  • does he go into a sort of trance? look at his eyes. like he's so focused. the man is a machine, every stroke is so powerful and precise.

  • haha I love Jim Chapin. He's so goofy.

  • omfg :x

  • he's a machine

  • Thomas Lang does his double stroke he way Chapin demonstrates at 0:55 (which Chapin says isn't the best way to do it). There are so many ways to do the same thing on drums!

  • OW!! you know

  • oh my god, I'm going to watch this video at least 7 times a week! :)

    JC the ultimate Moeller LEGEND!

  • this is like a porn video for drummers, just awesome

  • sexy man

  • So authoritative, so much control.

  • Can this be done with matched grip ?

  • of course since matched grip is the same as traditional except for the left hand, just mirror every exercise for the right hand on your left hand.

  • He's a character. A very animated person and a terrific teacher.

  • imagine the pad is hot

    AW!

    lol

  • hey,

it's funny but soem of the best drum teachers use stuff liek that, "imagine the pad is hot" or "imagine you are dribbling a basketball"

its awesome how it applies to what they are teaching, and it gives you a laugh

  • was he in dallas?

  • I will cut my hands and star began again

  • he looks kinda like he's gonna murder someone when he goes all normal facial expression-like... lol he is brilliant at teaching though I find it so easy to follow

  • ok...old man, I'm a shit ^^

  • Ow!

  • nobody ask me why, cuz i dont know myself, but i think he would be an amazing character in a zombie game like resident evil or something idk if its cuz his hands are just so ferocious he just seems like he is ready to shoot up some zombies

  • Jim is the man....

  • sir you have a fucking DW set behind you and you are playing in a pad what gives set up the drums and jam out dude

  • You're a fuckin Idiot!

  • A Real Living Leyend .

  • I think this guys is kind of famous but does anyone know if he is taking on students or doing clinics. I've seen his other videos and he's one of the best guys out there.

  • Jim Chapin is the man. Go google him and you will know the answer to your question...

  • Jim is in Florida, and he will teach if you go to him.

    He is very famous,,,,,,,,,,,,,

i was lucky enough to take lessons from him when he lived out here on Long Island.

He actually came to my house for lessons.

Oh, he also happens to be Harry Chapins dad.

    C :
