Im a confederate reenactor. Both sides dont take hits. But muskets dont have the best accuracy. Im goin to the 2013 Gettysburg reenactment. I was wondering if you have to have a bayonet for your gun because my unit in California says we dont need one for our reenactments
@bowiebackyard As a Sharpshooter, we did not use Springfields but Sharps Rifles which are quite accurate. As for the bayonet issue, my unit does not use them, but I see other infantry units use bayonets for stacking arms and marching to the battlefield. I can't say that it is necessary, but for now I would follow what your unit suggests and if you want a bayonet, go ahead and get one. I hope I helped and hope to see you on the battlefield.
i swear i saw one of the guys using a sharps 1853 rifle(i think i may have got the date wrong i was never good with dates so please don't have a go at me because you think i got it wrong)
the most sad thing about reenactment is that nobody wants to die, it would make it one hell of a lot more realistic if at least a couple of guys fell when they fired there volleys!
@OneSkiWonder It is actually the Union who take more hits, I've heard alot of Confederates wh say they take hits, but if you watch videos of reenactments, it clear that the Union sometimes take too many hits while the Rebs tend to not. At Cedar Creek last year, I saw 20 Rebs die after we fired 20 volleys... it doesn't add up.
@SLICSfootbaby It actually depends on the unit. There are reb units that think they are invincible and there are union units the same way. We did a reenactment of Cold Harbor and while the flag barrier was supposed to be the last man standing at the end, over half the union battalion retreated with the flag barrier.
@OneSkiWonder I know some Union units don't take hits, we call them Robo Yanks. At Cedar Creek last year, we had a unit of Regulars join us, they didn't follow orders and decided it would be a good idea to have an unscripted charge and hand-to-hand fight with some Rebs, but what was worse was thate they ran out in front of us twice when we were about to fire. They also walked away from the rebs when they realized they couldn't win. And they do it all in the name of historical accuracy.
Thanks. I'd like to get some pics from the successionists side, but the digital camera I have does have its limits. Witworths were only used in limited numers if at all. I think there might be one that is numbered and tallied to the Sharpshooters, but for the most part, they went to the impound or were snuck into Confederate hands. The standard for sharpshooters it the Sharps rifle. Though some were issued "heavy" rifles under certain circumstances.
thanks it was my first batle as a soldger i was the old drumer boy i was 16 in Longstreet's Assualt but in pickets charge we where comanded by picket so we all died but man see ing that wall of blue it was incredabul
oh cool what unit.....im 17th mississippi co. d but we fell in with the 26th N.C. but ill tell ya on sunday when we charged it was unbelievable.... great job
1st USSS, Co. B... Yeah, I have to admit, seeing Picket's Charge/Longstreet's Assualt was unreal. Too bad our unit was held in reserve for that battle and never saw action. Oh well, we saw plenty the day before.

What unit are you in? I'm starting Co. H of the 2nd, I'm pretty well set on the tactics, but do you have any advise as a Sharpshooter?

I just wait until i get tired and wait for the next yankee shot to be fired then i fall over. Im a good sport about it

Do you guys decide before hand who falls, or do you just fall if your at the front and a volley is fired?
zweg2 2 years ago
dont matter. if nobody wants to fall everybody just assumes the yankees can shoot for shit

You union doesn't like to take hits. Us Confederates know how to take hits.
OneSkiWonder 2 years ago
there were a number of us who took hits... And I have found myself in situations where Confederates refused to take hits.
loupgarou1863 2 years ago
I found myself in that same situation with the yanks. I took a hit when my gun got too hot to touch.
OneSkiWonder 2 years ago
That's probably the most hilarious thing i have ever heard today.
