They are playing 9 ball! the 9 is on the bottom left of the table. Two rail position shot was the best and probably only way to fall on the 9. People who keep saying he hit it too hard, you tell me how you would have played that. The probability of the ball jumping out is so small and it really wasn't his fault, it was the table's.
