  • thanks for the helpful tutorial

i did exactly what you did but i cant touch or see the displacements i made

    do you know why?

  • thanks so much this will forever help me. :)

  • Not seew, it's sew. Like sewing a blanket back together. SOH.

  • Can I ask how you created the grass growing down the sides of the top of the rock (before you started displacing it)?

  • @aeisou that was just how the texture was. an effect like that can be achieved with "Alpha" painting.

  • can u send me ur VHE???

  • @hassanziadon My VMF of the map you mean? Nope. I never saved it. :P

  • @badATchaos no man i mean the software...

  • hey man really need ur help. how do i make trees in my map??

cant figure out how to create trees in the map.

  • @hassanziadon You need to add a static prop and select a tree model. If you want to make your own tree you'll need to model one in an outside program such as Maya or 3ds Max. A brief tutorial of adding pre-existing props can be found here:

  • Thank you! I was wondering how to make realistic terrain for my map!

  • thank you, very helpful

  • i have a problem , every time i test the map i cant walk in the surface, i just walk in the skybox...i have tries nocliping there but nothing happens, please reply :(

  • @456justaguy All i can say is make sure you spawn on top of it, otherwise I don't know what the issue is.

  • great

  • very nice video , good job . i gonna make the gta vc map for garrys mod , but this will take a while

  • best tut ever awesome sound effects lol

  • where do i download hammer?

  • @wildkorean In Steam go to the Library. From the drop down menu on the left select Tools. In Tools double click on Source SDK. Once Source SDK is downloaded open it and you should see the Source SDK menu. From the menu the top object should be Hammer Editor.

  • @badATchaos for mine its library>view>tools>source SDK>then dowload just dint know if it was mine or other peoples was like that so i thought i would share:D Love your vids!

  • im not bad with displacements but for some reason my 2 displacements dont sew together and they are aligned so can u answer why if u know

  • gr8 tutorial! keep them coming!

  • Thanks man, i subscribed, i made an awesome map.

  • hey how do i make a massive displacement... I made one and it was all pointy and shit

  • @hewtoi As I described in the video its best to uses a bunch of smaller patches. That way you can have a lot more definition.

  • @badATchaos tanks

  • @badATchaos

When I make a bunch of patches I always get shadow lines where the all the pieces meet one and other. How would I stop this? Should I try grouping them?

  • @CerebralZombie Try either grouping them or try disabling shadows if the option exists.

  • That was an awesome tutorial!

  • on flat ground there are no problems but i have offroad cars and i want to drive them on the mountain

  • hi all ...i made a map with a mountain in half life 2 and when i spawn the jeep ... it fell down through the ground (the mountain ground) can someone help with with this problem because i really want to play with my friends ... oh yeah .... one more thing ... i run the maps in Garry's mod. PLEASE HELP!!!

  • @ilian4 did u try spawning it on a flat area?

  • @ilian4 if it does that reduce the mountain size of make the mountain out of smaller ones.

  • hey dude thanks so much for making this. before i thought i had to place clipped blocks everywere for hills. ugh.

    im subscribing to you! ^^

  • Is there any ways to invert blocks?

And is it possible to select all blocks in a map at once without clicking on every single one of them?

  • @TheMrSmisk

There is a way to mirror them if that's what your asking.

There is a Select All option under Edit if I remember right. However that will select EVERYTHING. What you can do is use VisGroups to hide everything else but the BSP blocks you want to keep. Once everything else is hidden you can either make a marque selection from one the grids or Select All the remaining.

If you don't know how to use VisGroups check out my tutorial. :P

  • thank you so fucking much!

  • scew lol syou ?

  • Most helpful video in a while. EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thanks.

  • subscribed. btw sew is pronounced "so" which u probably facepalmed your self about reviewing the video. XD thx for the tutorial!!!!

  • How did you get so many small geometry boxes? I just get big ones..

  • @Str4ndB3rg as i expanded in the video one thing you can do to combat that is to had multiple brushes and be sure to set them to the power of 4. Start watching at 3:00.

  • Thanks, realy helpfull. but when i make some small bumps i cannot run over them, i get to them and stop or go realy slowly, do you know whats happening? thanks

  • 1:20 instead of dragging like that, hold shift and click Z when over the view box, that will full screen it, and Shift + Z to toggle that.

  • depression. was the term for the hole type thingie, or divet.

  • I love your sound effects and your voice changes. :P

  • Finally my maps are not blocky. Thank you!

  • That was so helpful thanks!

    And feel subscribed.

  • Videos are very helpful. It's really hard to follow along with a "static" tutorial set up in webpage format. This is much more informative.

Just an aside: How come all the tutorial makers like to rapidly zoom in and out and skew and rotate around like madmen? It's distracting. I prefer slow panning if different angles are required.

  • nice

  • its sew right? thats like a sewing machine, or to sew fabric xD

Good job on the video though, IT HELPED A TON

  • aswesome, i had no idea there was a displacement tool.

    DERRR

  • I am very new to mapping and you make amazingly helpful videos so keep up the good work and have my virginity.

I think decorating interiors of houses, malls etcetera is the thing I find hardest about making good maps.

  • How do I make it smooth? Whenever I use displacements its all jagged now.

  • @0XSpartaX0 re-watch starting at 3:40. When smooth is selected be sure to make the radius large enough so that it encompasses a few surrounding vertexes.

  • Comment removed

  • You make the best tutorials, your videos should get more views

  • What about displacement grass?

  • Awesome tutorial, THANKS!

  • Verry Good Video Man

    I'll watch the Rest, 10/10

  • Sew won't work for me. I click Sew and nothing happens.

  • Hmm. Need more vertexes in common than I had.

  • Great displacement tutorial, I just have one question though; if you have played EP2, How can I get displacement cliffs and what not to look like that? I've tried everything and just cant get it right

  • @emetalce Yes, like the scene where Dog fight the Strider? One thing that u could done is decompile the level to see how they did it.

To decompile a map within the game u'll need two programs. Search for GCFScape and another one called VEMX. Use GCFScape to navigate thro the EP2 GCF to the maps folder. Click and drag the map u want onto your desktop. Next, use VEMX to decompile the BSP into a VMF. With that VMF you can view it in Hammer.

    Good luck.

  • Yeah I tried that. It shows me it but doesn't really teach me I guess. I'm guessing they use a bit of sub division and manipulate it, but I guess it is I'll have to look around.

  • haha welp maybe it's time for me to make another video ;)

I have been thinking of making some higher level videos other then just "basic" stuff. I've only made one advanced vid so far; about custom blend textures.

  • @badATchaos is there a way to make destructable cheasy elements, like say breaking wooden boxes only apply it to metal, so in a sense i would be making very dumbed down destructable environments, even applied to land in a very cheasy way, if there is that would be a great vid to show, on how to make those things.

like make a wood box but disguise it as metal or roof piece and when you shoot it holes open up big holes.

    so on and so on

  • @BillyandGrim

yep. You can have breakable metal too.

Make a brush (block) and hit ToEntity. Change it to func_breakable. Once converted you can change the material type to wood, metal, glass, rock and so on.

  • Please make A video about "run map" errors! Ive made so many maps and the best ones always come with errors!

  • @Lockstar7 There are sooo many ways to cause errors. Check out this site:

    interlopers. net/errors/

Scroll a ways down that page and u'll see a tab called "compile." Hit that and a list of many different errors will come up and ways to fix them. Hopefully your problem is on there.

    Good luck.

  • OMG, that was a "drastically" informative tutorial!

  • like your servers, good amount of people on them. but hey, do you know how to add custom textures to dod hammer?

  • yes i do. if you look through my videos i have one thats about making custom blends. if you watch it i should say what the directory is.

  • it says you put the custom textures in the dod/materials

is that it because it's still not working for me.

  • already have a video on it :p

  • Really useful :D

  • Cool!

  • thanks for the upload

  • You know what's funny, I just yesterday was looking for a tutorial on how to do this and couldn't find one.

    You're my savorier man!

    Thanks for this epic upload.
