LEDs are brighter, produce less heat than incandescent bulbs and last longer, so sure, it's a good idea to use them. However, it's not necessarily cost-effective. A LED kit can cost 200 bucks, so it's only worth it if your machine is constantly on. If you have a pinball at home that you only switch on to actually play, you'll likely never break even.
Great project! I used to own a Bride of Pinbot machine and regret selling it. Hopefully can get another one later and I'll do exactly that - it does look sharp with the colors!
why do this why mod it to something new and take that classic nostalgic warmth felling you get with incandescent a way.. LED's have the place in new machine but should be left out of the old ones. by the way you have taken the collectors price and just trashed it by updating with all the new lights. but hay to each their own.
@haker67 Wow...the bulbs are replicable for a reason, they burn out and need to be replaced. Changing the bulbs from one kind to another does nothing to the value of the machine, if anything it raises the value. Please make sure you know something about what your talking about before making a retarded comment. Thanks.
Thanks for the info. I'm still on the fence if the expense is worth it for me. I like the vivid colors but the intensity of light is a bit much for me. My games are only on for a short duration so it would take years in electricity savings to make up for the cost of an LED kit for me. Great info though.
You'd essentially save more if you were to have just kept in the incandescent bulbs, that is of course whether or not you've already the appropriate amount of LED bulbs to replace them, because they can be particularly costly. Replacing those lights would ultimately cost more, than if he were to keep the existing ones in, for it's not as though he's to keep the machine running for multiple hours at a time.
@UnknownXV obviously it isn't expensive to transfer power throughout Quebec because there is a ridiculously large amount of hydro power in Quebec... fuckin french
Props to a dad that helps his son with a cool science project! Also, this is worthy research that is so specific that people in the industry may pay twenty dollars for a full-fledged report breaking down expenses to switch over, labor, and savings. I'm sure George could make a great entrepreneur!
1) How many hours of operation does it take for the LEDs to pay for themselves?
(Ignoring, for a moment, the cost of your labor.)
2) Are these LEDs a substitute for the inherent qualities of incandescent bulbs? i.e. do the LEDs spread the light uniformly, and do they ramp their brightness over time? (Most LEDs, by design, have an instant-on-off operation, which is unattractive for pinball.)
@markeedragon =D seems like when he grows up he will be a great public speaker.. i would have been to shy to speak and know it would be shown to others.
Though.. when will the next MarkeeMarketing vids come? Been some time since Ive seen anything from that and they really helped me out a bit.. Ive made about 4000 dollar from that stuff.
@JakeyRofl Thats interesting because none of he's parents have very long necks.. however I dont think its that long tbh, he's just got a head thats about as big as his neck.. which makes the neck look a lot longer.
Great project, And nice score on the Bride :)

Uh, no. Since the bulbs are fully removable, the value hasn't changed at all. You obviously know nothing about pinball machines.

Yeah but if you buy the LED bulbs they cost alot even though it's cheaper it cancels eachother out so you are basically the same.

Leds look great under the controlled lamp inserts. However, they look terrible behind the backglass and under the plastics.

11 cents?
That's horrible 0_o.
Here in Quebec it's 0.054 cents for the first 30 KW /hour and then around 0.07 cents for the rest.
It's even less at night.
You're getting ripped off on electrical costs.

@MediaX3 Yeah I guess we are quite lucky.
The USA needs to make more nuclear power plants and wind // solar farms. Coal plants not only pollute but are extremely inefficient.
