wheres the best place to buy paint i wanted a green metalic car looking type paint for my bick but i dont think the have it at lowes or home depot etc..
@uanastimaofaka Have a powder coater do it. It's a much cheaper and just as if not more durable way to color your bike like new. Just make sure he's done frames before so he'll know how to prep the frame (i.e. covering the headtube, bottom bracket, braze-ons, etc.)
This video is pretty awful. For a start it doesn't look very good when its finished. However, more importantly they neglect to tell you that you need the following tools:
A bottom bracket tool, crank extractor, chain-whip and a cassette-removal tool. On any bike built after about 1960, it is impossible to remove the chainset or the rear cassette without these.
I have been riding and repairing bikes all my life and have worked in bike shops. This video is a joke.
@sefjaguar I was able to fully disassemble a 1980's Schwinn with an adjustable wrench and a flathead. But you're right about the crank puller, that is a necessity.
@Otarku Ah yeah I realized after I posted that I was wrong about the cassette tool as you just take the wheels off.
Although saying that it would be better to give the bike a whole service which would require you to take apart and regrease the hubs and moving parts.
@sefjaguar You don't need a crank extractor. I just restored a Raleigh Rapide and I banged the pin out of with a hammer.............and the whole thing just pulled out
@forbiddenfriday honestly you have to take it apart to get the best paint job, u dont wanna sit there and use painters tape over painted stuff because sometime it could take paint off, so best bet is to take your bike completely apart and sand it down just enough where the paint will stick.
I do this to all the bikes I steal so they can't be recognized.

considering it only costs like, £40 to get a powder-coat, this seems like a potentially disastrous waste of time

I'm doing this right now and Sanding the bike is taking forever

I remove everything when I paint my bike. When I say everything I mean everything.

Wouldn't mind doing something like this...maybe when I move to Vancouver if I invest in a higher-end bike.

He coated the frame just after sanding? Without cleaning or something? The paint must hold for approximately one week, i guess.

You have to paint a bike like this
1.Take Out All Parts like in video
2.Sand It Down
3.Get Your Primer Paint on primer
4.Sand off primer then get anything to wipe down
5.paint on your choice of paint I choose gloss
6.Then clear coat it

Holy crap the cables looked awful on the finshed product! Oh and you don't have to take the cassette off the hub to paint a frame...duh.

How Much would it cost to make a shop do it? I've gotten really busy latley so I won't be able to have time to do it my self.

@sefjaguar Considering the price of specialized bicycle tools I wouldn't mind buying a tube of grease.
Otarku 1 year ago
@sefjaguar nah. you have to sand paper it so that paint can hold on to something. if you dont your paint might chip off
