SEGA replaced it in the PC re-release to avoid controversy.

You're not supposed to do it that way, use up and down alternately to build momenum and get the barrel moving, one it moves enough, jump off.

Oh i see, i always thought you're supposed to make the barrel jump BY jumping, so that you can pass by below it.

i know it's possible to get past that barrel at 1:57, cuz i've only done it once. i just need to know how to do it. i time out every time at that part even when i have the bubble shield, i get close, but not enough to get through

All you have to do is swing it (up to down, down to up, keep going) with the D pad. when it goes up, HOLD UP. Get to peak altitude and switch to HOLDING DOWN. Get to your furthest depth and switch to HOLDING UP. Get to your highest point and then switch to HOLDING DOWN. Keep on rocking it back and forth.

It sounds really complicated, but that's only because I wrote it out and explained it.

The way I do it on the video is completely the wrong way to do it, but it's quicker than the proper way.

that fuckin barrel is evil. my friend actually made it by timing his jumps perfectly.

it was only later on we found out your supposed to hold up as the barrel goes up and down when it does down.

you werent supposed to be jumping.

so that's how you got pass that level! i got pass it only by glicth with that bubble, slipped right through the wall and out. I HATED THAT DRUM BARREL!!

Have you tried playing this particular act as Knuckles? There's a certain trick (without debug) that you can use to actually take Sonic's path instead of Knux's, so that you can fight the Carnival Night boss (if you take the regular Knuckles path, you end up with no boss fight at all).

yeah, I accidentaly found that WAY back in the day, and then had to show about 20 people how to do it!

unfortunately you can't do the same with sonic, you can get to the knuckles path, but the teleporter won't activate.

(an interesting side note, I do prefer to play as knuckles than sonic, but was challenged to do an angel island speedrun as sonic, so thought "why not just do the entire game?")

I do use the level select to go to the levels, and a savestate at the beginning so i can re-record without having to bang in the level select again.
