The best & worst part of SL is that it is always changing. There are updates regularly & occational problems arise. I personally love SL, work full time in it, & am having a great time making money, creating fun games, & socializing with people all over the world. If u need help, IM me in world.

Wow! It is great that instead of building a truly utopian world, Second Life is just importing our old tired failing Capitalist system into virtual space! This will be great when Capitalist greed and acculmulation finally destroys the last animals, water, plants and atmosphere of Earth! We can just Vanilla Sky our same boring lives into virtual space while our brains are connectively stored in "safe places" like Yucca Mountain! Good Times! Nothing feels as good as swimming in that virtual pool!
few more months been in there for a year now. I build, create armor, my wife (yes in sl and rl to) creates textures. Look crap or not you can make money. we do it for fun and some cash xtra im not rich. But maybe you should give it a FAIR chance. And xplore instead of like mose noobs do a for sex or b golddiggin..
Excellent introduction to the amazing tool fo SL! I see SL as applicable as the Internet. It is a more interesting, rich, and human way to organize and interact with digital bits of data. And yes, it is infotainment as well. I believe we will look back at our current compute experience -- which is filled with flat text, photos and videos of someone else -- like we look back at black and white TV. Ghastly Dark Age.
Thanks for your comments, Polly. It's definitely exciting to see how Second Life and other virtual worlds have evolved over the last year. There are so many opportunities to use these platforms for communication, education and collaboration. This is just the beginning...
i think its just amazing hard work from a new kind of society... the virtual public. It has so many ramifications, i just can think about 20 in the first look.
It might me more useful if it didn't have such stringent hardware requirements. And they still don't support Vista yet! It should have been made to be compatible with most any system, it would be more popular if it was.
First, you complain that you need good hardware to run Second Life, then you complain that Second Life doesn't support Vista. I've got Second Life running on a system that's a good six years old. Not running well, but well enough to be useable. Vista is barely useable on a 3 GHz Pentium D with a 6000-series nVidia card. That's more than enough to run Second Life. Also, Vista support for Second Life was in beta about a month ago. It might be officially supported already.
It just doesn't work. People lose focus and forgot that Second Life will always be a game. People play SL for entertainment. People will not play SL for work. Any company that plans to have a presence in SL must remember that. Unless you market FUN, you aren't going to get anywhere.
Who wants to live forever a material based life, the second clone the first, we have a real life inside us dreaming, tied 4 our psiqis. The big Q is who are working 4 waking up our real potencials? doyou whant a real power or a simulation? Yes second is a grat tool but how you use it makes the diference.
second life may soon enough become an only life for some... soon enough, second life could become too much like the real world where politics will dominate and wars will rage on. that i believe would be a factor of the downfall of real world civilization.
if anyone understands what i am trying to say, please feel free to share your opinions, good or bad, or try to add on to my thoughts. i am very curious
Hmm, i have never played second life, but i have Read numerous articles about it. Something about creating Weapons? IF someone didn't like a company, wouldn't they create a weapon and simply destroy it? One article mentioned a flaming bicycle cannon someone made, I belive second life may colapse Upon itself, but i do not belive any real world conciquences would come from this program.
Objects and buildings in Second Life can't be damaged by "weapons" unless they (the buildings) are specifically designed for that purpose. All you really have to worry about are "griefers," people who use every accountholder's ability to create objects as a tool for harassment, and they are easily dealt with just by banishing them from your site.
SL is totally customizable... so the person that owns the company can shut off the combat and weapons modes... you would need to try it to understand it! =)
I believe second life is too ambitious and that the puplic is not ready for this kind of breakthrough into digital life. Its a shame it was such a good concept.
I just don't get it. How is this better than regular web presence? What does SL do that you can't already do with a corporate website. Plus, you need someone to man an avatar all the time? Sure, it looks curious and perhaps even fun for a small demographic. But functional? I will believe it when I see some actual data rather than marketing points.
This is an immersive 3D environment that allows data to be browsed in a more "physical" manner, a nice compromise for people who prefer handling a magazine to reading a web page, for example. Products can be modeled in three dimensions and scripted to actually display functionality. Don't think of this as a replacement for your 2D website, think of it as a supplement.
And no, you don't need to have somebody constantly inworld. You can automate your site and receive notices in your email when somebody actually needs your attention.
I get what's in it for business, but, really, we get bombarded by advertising in real life enough to not want to have it follow us in our leisure time
this is great for second life users!!! companies will have things for resisdents to do extending the fun for everyone, because some people don't want to buy thier own land.
one day we will live in a compiuter! and leave for ever and then we can came back in our Biologic world with a clone of us..We can leave for ever..so when u die u transfer your memory and personality in the compiuter
I think it's wonderful to see a rl PR firm establishing a presence in SL. There are so many companies showing up there now and it's certainly a new way to look to market your brand. I run a small real life company that is spread over 6-8 countries on any given day and I LOVE having meetings in SL, vs our usual method of a skype chatroom. It's much more personal and you can really set it up to do anything you want, if you know what you're doing. Nice video!

when I first heard of SL I thought it was the stupidest thing to do. Buying clothes for a virtual character? C'mon! But now that I'm in SL and I try to explain it to others they give me the same look like I'm from Jupiter. It's like the Matrix. A lot like it. You cannot be told what it is. You have to see it for yourself :)
I agree 100% ebayfan! Everyone likes something different, I personally enjoy SL, its a huge world with so much to do. Some people like it, some people don't. and Oddone, lol there are a lot of immature people in the adult SL too, they are everywhere you just have to run away! *runs with arms flailing*
personally, i think this is an incredibly stupid idea. you spend real money buying stuff for your character in a virtual world. sounds a lot like habbo hotel with brand names
So spending $15 a month to run around becoming a mage = stupid (WoW), spending $50 on the latest console game = stupid because you're wasting money on pixels, and spending $25 on you hobby is stupid because it's a waste of money. My point is, if you enjoy what you're doing, it's not waste of money. Spending a few dollars in SL can provide you with hours of entertainment.
i have played this game once (on the starter island) and it was boring. But i heard car companies sell cars on the game, but cant you fly, so what is the point?
i play teen second life cause im not old enough for the adult one...i hate teen second life, cause no one acts mature, and hardly anyone plays, it gets really lonely, and the teens that play it..well...they sorta suck at building LOL, cant wait till i can play the adult second life
on high graphics and veiw distances im not getting very imppresive frame rates ha i have a 7900gs its a combination of graphics intesity and lag mostly lag for me cause my graphics cards is good :P
I love secondlife, however, I find it kinda sad that it is about to change as companies start moving in. in the past couple of months, all of the buzz around secondlife has been about the huge potential for companies to further their brands via secondlife and use the users as "lab rats"...hope it doesnt change too much!
Look for a location that is closer to home I guess - also the more people in the same location = more lag. A faster internet connection and good graphics card will go along ways aswell.
Have you tweaked your preferences? Tools > Preferences. I use an AMD Sempron 3000+, 1GB ram and an nVidia GeForce 6200 256MB ram. Disable voice, lower distance to 128 or 96m, reduce particles to 1024, set avatar composite to 0, lower your resolution if you have to, check your internet speed (I have 4Mbit cable), and play with lowering other settings to see what works best. You may want to join a forum for Second Life to find more ways. (Second Life website has one).
IS there anywhere in Second life where i can fight people with a god damn katana... with a 9mm in the other hand.If so tell me cause this game is dull trying to make friends with some abnormal people
yah mine too always lag, i counted, every time i log in, it takes abt 2 mins to load and oh lord when people starts talking to me, it jams up everything!! i def need a new graphic card...hehe
One day this game will replace the world wide web which already is a featured item in this virtual world. It's obvious to me this will one day be how commerce is finally going to put a face and personality to all those web sites!! I LOVE THIS CONCEPT!!! IT ROCKS!!!
You might not be to far off. At least as far as the real estate speculators. If the prices keep rising no one will be able to buy it. Just look at the current real life market in the US.
Second Life can be the future drug and everyone will be inside home, 'living' a second life - artificial, and forgeting the real life... no more real relations with friends, family...now, just you and the fantasy. MATRIX
do NOT start playing this game. it's so dangerous I can't even describe: it will change you, us, the world. You can still stop it - now. Just do the research and you'll see what this game will do with you if you start it.
it´s unstoppable. and i´m not saying this in favor for SL. "snow crash" pointed in the direction of where these technologies will be going and it´s already happening. it´s a little bit like being in the year 1904 saying "this new invention of the telephone is dangerous". Don´t be a Luddite. As in RL you will continue to be forced to make up your own mind and decisions. And as in RL there´ll be a lot of misled folk around...
The problem with the "game" is that it lacks one key part of real life: Laws and law enforcement. Thats why's "banks" can close down and take your money, and why people can renege on promises. Theres no legal means in-game to prevent fraud and dishonestly.
>.< i tried second life it was retarted the only thing i did was fly like a NERD >.< and then i fell and now im stuck in this building >.< my advice (Dont waste your time plsying it >.<
Believe or Not this is just the beginning, Second Life will change our life in less then 10 years. One day will be look such as real dimension! playing it will be add-you!! like a drug! Most of the busieness company will go throught to sell real products and also virtual. Virtual market sounds ridicle right now to us later will not. Your childrens will probabily buy some virtual products for sure.
In a hundred years time we'll all be connected to a perfect, virtual world forever and there will be no more real world which isn't perfect. Well the rate in which technology is gowing this will be likely to happen.
That's just great, and going right into that Power Point that shows just what SL can do. These guys have made a great promotion tool and their own market. Fantastic. My hat is off to you :-)
Sithci It doesn't, To get credits costs money, but creating an account and playing doesn't.
Well i downloaded the game, and started playing yesterday, it's pretty cool - i've met afew nice people there. I guess the whole Richard and Judy discussion about it will gain the game quite afew extra players.
If anyone wants to add me, My name is Peter Bamaisin
I saw people talking about this on Richard and Judy earlier today, i'm really considering joining Second Life, it seems pretty cool. I've yet to try it out, so once i do i'll come down to your island!
Yeah right, and then imagine in the middle of your meeting some moron with a new script to try out floods your virtual conference room with a few thousand virtual penises.
Sorry but the video is a SL fantasy that ignores the fact the most of the people on SL are bored idiots who enjoy screwing with others. The idea of a useful virtual environment is good but SL isn't it and never will be because Linden Labs already has the reputation of pandering to the idiots.
Each parcel of land can have its own access list, preventing additional unwanted guests from interfering. Also, object creation and scripts can be turned off or individualized to a specific group, preventing outsiders from griefing.
It doesn't seem to be working here anymore. Is there another video hosting site that I can find it on. I'm planning on using it as part of a presentation on SL soon.
The camera panning in this was really nice -- how was that done? Cutting and narration are nice touches too. OMG is that Rez and Endira? Hehe, nice stuff.

I loved this game, sadly, I had to delete it since I always lagged. >_<
The only thing I hated about it was that you had to pay for it, fortunatley, for having another account? lol, just check that it's your first.
I know everyone knows that trick, but really, those people are really stupid for actually making you pay for another account. >_<

MATRIX

yeah same can be said about books or films or anything else that someone else views as threatening.

The new "firstlook" client helps alot with graphical lag. I avg over 30fps now @ 1600x1200. I think it'll be the main release client within a week.

do NOT start playing this game. it's so dangerous I can't even describe: it will change you, us, the world.

Anjohl 5 years ago
There is no need for a "bank" in SL.
People "renege" on promises all the time in RL, what's the difference?

Funny, I was taught that locks keep honest people honest and that a thief will find a way to steal.

is it free?
brunaobr 5 years ago
Yes. General residents are free. You have to pay montly to have priviledge to own land and you have a 'tier' fee for all the land you own.
Other residents make products (clothing, buildings, vehicles) that you can purchase or you can make your own.

I know plenty of people making good money in SL. And the lag is only THAT bad when you have a cruddy computer, lol. And i don't ;-)

In a hundred years time we'll all be connected to a perfect, virtual world forever and there will be no more real world which isn't perfect. Well the rate in which technology is gowing this will be likely to happen.
nemesisevil202 5 years ago
Too bad the lag makes it unplayable.

That's just great, and going right into that Power Point that shows just what SL can do. These guys have made a great promotion tool and their own market. Fantastic. My hat is off to you :-)

Well i downloaded the game, and started playing yesterday, it's pretty cool - i've met afew nice people there. I guess the whole Richard and Judy discussion about it will gain the game quite afew extra players.
