Yes and no. The first movement only has a couple technically difficult passages (4:45 for example), but having the right intonation, dynamic contrasts and creating that warmth and richness of sound is what takes the most work. it's a great beginner piece to build confidence in both the low and high registers and to work on romantic, legato bowing. The cellist here does a fantastic job.
Oh really, I wish I can see her playing live on that Rach's repertoire, I don't expect anything close to the rendition back then with Halska but nonetheless she's always an idol to me, and I have never found Rach's this sonata so lively elsewhere else-duo, it could have been phenomenal but the duo have done it, again seeing here playing live (on video) is a definite joy and to me nostalgic... Thanks.
Awesome Barczyk! Probably she's got the best rendition among my collection (on vinyl albums, remember those!) on Rachmaninoff's cello sonata op.19 (with Halska on piano accompaniment), a studio recording back in the 80's with Muza in Poland. Barczyk looks older from this clip, she's was quite beautiful in the pic on the back of the album sleeve! Thanks for the clip!!! Now I can see Barczyk playing live!!! Lazyslip from Hongkong.
beautiful!
