  • OK, I have been a Yes fan forever and was a big Zep fan, but this does not hold a candle to solo Squire projects or to Yes. Who is Erik kidding thinking this would have paralleled Yes or Zep. It would have had a little FM play, a video on the long forgotten MTV and died.

  • @EriktheHermit

Before Telephone Secrets the piece was Satellite from the Drama sessions. After Yes went on hiatus the song Squire developed the song into Telephone Secrets.

Yes never recreated this song. The only XYZ song they recreated was Can You See which was changed to Can You Imagine on Magnification

  • This would be huge.

  • Interesting -- Squire's vocals, to me, sound a lot like Sting here!

  • @trfesok Yes, I've noticed from repeated listening that both Squire and Sting have a very phlegmy touch to their singing

  • @trfesok haha that's true!

  • this is gonna be the basis for an album in 2012 by yes.

  • @Flyfromhere2011 well nothing's been confirmed of course but i hope so, it could become a masterpiece has a great groove!

  • What was and never came to be or The band remains the same?

  • Chris has one of the most unique and brilliant voices in all of music. I just don't see how somebody couldn't like it. Blows my mind.

  • This is fucking brilliant. The tempo is so perfect as well.

  • people you need to remeber these are DEMOS! THe respective musicians were probably playing the 'current' arrangements after working out the basic changes, and trying out a few things. These are not polished recordings, Critiquing them as if they were is pointess.

  • @jpirard You are right. As for Jimmy Page, I have heard demos of Zeppelin songs and what they started off with was usually far different than the finished project. They'd end up becoming a lot better and tighter than what they were in the beginning. I play music and record it just for fun. You lay down something you came up with, listen to it, think about it, and then go back and make changes to it. These demos were just the seeds. Rough drafts.

  • @jpirard Well said. This is just a very interesting peep into how the tunes evolved from as you said demos. Fascinating stuff!

  • yeah, i'm shocked by Alan White's useless playing on some of these demos (was the casio drum machine broken?) and Squire's playing too. (All 3 sound like they're going thru the motions, and I think it's obvious the CHEMISTRY was not there. Page is very different personality-wise to these guys. And I say that as someone who would've LOVED this group to succeed.

  • Squire's voice is one of the best in music, and I don't think I have to mention his bass skills, do I? Anyway, Page was not in the best of conditions at the time this was recorded (heroin, alcohol, etc.) and he was mourning the death of Bonham. Given all that, he still played like the genius he is, even if the music doesn't have a lot of spark. Heaven knows I could listen to Chris Squire play bass for hours on end.

  • @dmreeoogdaq I love both zep and yes, and I love Squire, but his vocals are not suited for LEAD vocals. fantastic backing vocals, um, yes.

  • @TouchingYou For someone who is not considered a "lead vocalist" I think Squire sings way better than many who are the front person for a group.

  • I think it could have worked if Plant had been allowed to do his own thing over the grooves - I think Squire saw them as finished songs? I don't know! I don't think Plant wanted to do it anyway? :-)

  • @kettlezone Robert Plant was too busy being an asshole then, like he is now. The biggest reason, in my opinion, on why refuses to tour with Page and Jones is because he doesn't want to split tour money. He has also said he doesn't like Yes, because they are "boring".

  • @zzzxxyy That's not true. Plant has a monster amount of integrity. He always fought to have Zep LOSE money by not releasing singles; by putting royalties towards crazy album packaging, etc. He didn't work with allison kraus or the honeydrippers to get rich!

  • I've always liked Chris's throaty smooth thing he's got in his voice.

  • Listening to these jam sessions makes me want to cry thinking of what could have been...

  • I kinda like Chris's voice on this one.

  • should have had ginger baker or bill bruford on drums - somebody who could add multi-dimensional rhythms

  • Like he said, "Satellite" is on the remastered 2004 release of Drama. It wasn't on the LP [which I had in 1986] or the first two CD releases.

  • Plant stated he did not like the complex music. page was trying to continue his no quater, achlis last stand, ect style.

    nobody else came close.

  • Thanks for posting, I like this version better than satellite

  • Wait...this definitely isn't the one I downloaded. I downloaded the four XYZ tunes as part of a torrent (a more or less complete collection of Jimmy Page's discography) and Telephone Secrets is a badass 4:17 instrumental...Definitely not what's up here.

Does anybody have an idea of what I actually have? It sounds nothing like this.

  • A ver quien la monta en cover primero.

  • Someone should post up the Yes version "Song No. 4 (Satellite). It's on the Drama album...it was written back then and it's Chris, Alan and Steve. Steve came up with a lot more melodic stuff on this song.

  • i would have loved to seen this project go through, while 90125 era yes was alright, i think it would have been better if squire and white pursued this band instead

  • I also heard that Plant attended one rehearsal but wasn't interested in "prog rock."Geez, Page and Plant with Squire and White behind them?Imagine that sound with Squire singing them harmonies with Plant.

  • plant not interested in prog rock? well, i know he is a sucker of country and blues, but he did record songs like "the song remains the same", "no quarter", "in the evening", "dazed and confused", "black dog", "the battle of evermore" "all my love" and "achilles last stand" which, tho they are definitely blues/country-rooted, they still gotcomplex composition and tempo changes, and in some cases they got heavy complex keyboard stuff, if that's not prog rock i dont know what's it!

  • I can picture Plant singing this more than Anderson, but something is definately missing from the longer instrumental parts--they needed JPJ or Wakeman bad. As for vocals, can anyone picture old school Deep Purple Coverdale?? This def would have been a sic band, Atlantic signed the best back then

  • The story goes that one of the reasons the band never materialized was due to Jimmy Page being messed up on drugs.

  • Man these guys are really good but they didnt have the magic that Zeppelin or Yes had when they got together. But they are all so damn good, it doesnt even matter cause its so fucking cool to listen to.

  • Are you kidding me, this band would definitely have paralleled Yes or Zeppelin -- Yes failed terribly at recreating this song because XYZ was a magic of its own. I downloaded the whole jam session, and I loved everything I heard just as much as Yes and Zeppelin. Squire / White / Page was definitely a combo that should not have been abandoned just because Plant didn't want to join.

  • Nope sorry, Chris squire cant chalk up to anderson or plant

  • Not talent-wise, but for the contrast that the band set as a whole, I would rather hear Squire's voice over either Plant or Anderson.

  • No, I dont mean talent wise, they are all great, but as a singer Chris squire cant compete with Plant or Anderson

  • Well then I suppose that what I'm trying to say is I can't picture Plant or Anderson singing this song the way Chris does. He has a very unique voice of his own, and while he might not be as enthusiastic or emotional with his voice as the other two, it's got its own little magic that's worked its way into my mind :)

  • @EriktheHermit can you msg me where you got the jams from? Would be much appreciated cheers

  • @Staccatox erik here; got the jam off limewire a few years ago. it had this along with mind drive and can you imagine all as one song. dont know where to get it now but if you cant find message me

  • @EriktheHermit whats the name of the Yes version?

  • @Luxmaxnike Satellite ( watch?v=lbWDCZS5JyY )

  • @Luxmaxnike Erik here -- in the video description, as it says, the Yes version is called Song No. 4 (Satellite)... for me, it was released as a bonus track on the remastered Drama

  • @Topographic0ceans oh, ok thanks

  • Man, it is too bad they didn't stay together. Peter Gabriel would be an interesting choice. Just call the band XGYZ or XYZG if the first one sounds too dirty.

  • Correction to my previous comment... love the sound PAGE gives this.

  • This is interesting! I think I like this better than what was put on Drama. Maybe I'm wrong, though. It's been a while since I've listened to it! I like the sound Plant gives it.

  • @eennymo plant not HERE! Chris Squire Lead Vox!

  • Squire sounds like Pete Townsend on vocals.

  • I hope more demos turn up.

  • Why have a lead singer type at all? The power trio here could have handled it all. This is a demo- Squire's voice can be even stronger when he is doing a "proper" take- even one album would have been nice. Thankfully, Yes used all but a few of the XYZ ideas on later albums...

  • I dont even think they should have had vocals, they are so good on there instruments, its like the vocals are meaningless.

  • I hope these guys get back in studio and continue this work! It far more "real" than anything plant is doing these day's with his hillbilly garbage. Jimmy get at it bro

  • That would be "git er done" in hillbillyeze.

  • Jimmy Page sounds rusty and dried up on these tracks, but his groove is still there. Squire and White, as always, nice and tight. This could have taken off, but they asked the wrong man to their lead voclaist. Page suggested Robert Plant, but Plant hated prog rock, so it was called off. They should have gone after Brian Ferry, Peter Gabriel, John Wetton (Squire would have been demoted to keyboards) or (GASP!)Roger Daltrey. The Who were a shambles after Moonie died.

  • Squire demoted to keyboards? :O

What you say is blasphemy! Squire was born to play bass. He plays it better than everyone else. He would never have agreed, and it would have ruined the band.

And well, it was Ex-Yes-And-Zeppelin, so they would have needed to change the name if somebody from another band came. Although Peter Gabriel would have been cool.

  • I only said that if Wetton were the bass player, (he's great too!). JW also played guitar and piano, so he would have interchnaged with Page on guitar and Squire on bass and keys. No insult towards you or The Fish!

  • @elviszeppelin I THOUGHT THE SAME THING. He's sloppy on all these demos and we know he was too messed up in this period which is why Plant and JOnesy had to do In Thru The Out Door mostly themselves.

  • @TouchingYou That's why they are "demos". Of course if they were going to record the song and officially release it, it would be much more cleaned up. And how the hell could you call Alan's playing useless. It fits just perfectly.

  • This is a badass song...really complex. It's a shame it's never seen anything beyond a demo recording.

  • is that chris squire singing?

  • Yes Yes.... :)

  • Thank you ,never knew any recorded out put existed this is great !

  • I haven't seen them on tour. My brother saw them in San Diego in 1997 and was held by Alan White when he was a baby. I'm jealous of him because he doesn't even like Yes anymore and I still do. My Dad is trying to get me tickets to the Universal City show in August.

  • That's awesome man - I've been a Yes fan since infancy (like 10 months old) as well - my dad had Drama and 90125 and what I count as a semi-Yes album, the first Asia album. I listened to those a shitload when I was young and as I grew up and Napster came around, I discovered Fragile, CttE and the Yes Album. As I grew older (I'm 17, but starting at 16), I discovered everything else from the first Yes - Magnification and the bootlegs. Howe AND Banks are my heroes, and Rick Wakeman is my god. Peace

  • Great! I never heard anything from this mythical collaboration. Liv hearing Chris with Page.
