here are people without cosmetic surgery, silverware, luxuries, good dentistry but they are contented and that tugged at my heartstrings. the tour guide and the japanese girl were my fave characters.
this movie made the arabs look really bad , like is they were all very poor and living in deserts , no no no , why didn't the movie show us rich neighborhoods of Casablanca and Rabat and other cities , where lives moroccans in nice houses and drive expensive cars !!!!
@mimito92 it did not make them look bad at all, it just showed us what's on the other side of all that good living & westernization - abject poverty and people eking out a living.
it also highlighted their humility, grace, selflessness & compassion despite their circumstances e.g. the tourguide.
i was touched, but the scene where the family was eating from one shared bowl and the tour guide's selflessness made it even more poignant.
Watched this movie some days back and hard not to feel touched by it. It's one of those movies that put current world society on the questioning desk. congratulations for all actors and the director. The movie deserved all prizes it won.
I didn't notice any one really depicted in a poor light at all... I was actually surprised to see people like arguing over it. It's ridiculous how people are saying that they're being depicted bad. Being some one who watched this movie and doesn't know anything of Morocco, this movie makes them look good in my opinion. If anything, Americans were made out to be selfish, inconsiderate and impatient, shown when it came to the man's wife being shot.
The little arab kid in this movie is the BEST KID IN ANY MOVIE EVER!! First he spies on the hot arab chick in the shower, then he wacks off, then he randomly shoots kate blanchett from about a mile away, who is the ugliest bitch with the biggest nose ever!!! WOOO!!!
Nice movie but there are some things exageerated a little bit , I'm a Moroccan and we don't shoot kids or slap womens in the mountains randomly for the sake of a wounded foreign tourist , I think the director made up this silly detail lol
I cant understand totally this film because in the end it reaches an paradox situation, where all situations going on are interconected, but this conection is transformed by the events itself, turning the "bad" situation into deep goodnes, mercy? It feels like an deep algorithm in a movie. Really a very good film, with an deep and amazing message about reality and life , i just saw it yesterday. I want to congratulate alejandro iñarritu and guillermo arriaga.
@archifx You talk about stereotypical and mention Crash as better? Hahahahahahahaha Crash was all about stereotypes and things we all already know, it takes a good movie like this one to bring so many cultures in one story.
So you think Crash is not stereotypical? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA xD Babel is a much superior movie. If YOU didn't like thats one thing, but it is NOT a bad movie.
All the characters are lovable, with a story you can feel for. But of course, as always, not the Arabs. They were always portrayed as a bunch of dirty, barbaric people with nothing to do but kill. The worst part is that this is NOTHING near what really goes on in our world, kids watching their sister strip? This movie is sickening, and in my opinion, should be banned for the scene relating to pedophilia. Watch Reel Bad Arabs to see for how long Hollywood has been dehumanizing Arabs in all ways.

"who probably are that savage and corrupt." With this kind of bullshit said, it shows how this movie is doing a good job in making you believe that it's true. The police in Morocco aren't any different from the police in America. Making them seem different, with you believing that they are different, when no records by the UN nor Human Rights Watch show any criticism on the police in Morocco being corrupt to this level. I'm not being 'touchy', you're the one being unaware. Of the 40 years of
of the humiliation, dehumanization of Arabs through movies for over 40 years. In the most meaningless, propagating sense you can think of, and you'd even feel the same way towards if you live in our side of the world. Since you're not it's natural for you to feel comfortably cold about it. You seem to have ignored how the KIDS were protrayed in this movie, with their lifestyle representing NOTHING of the reality in Morocco's childrens' lifestyles. With the movie making them seem un-innocent
and sick without limits to the point I'd say that this movie should at least be frowned on for pedophilia portrayal. Again, I advice you to watch "Reel Bad Arabs", and see what's the cause behind the 'sensitivity', as you say, that we feel towards movies such as this.
Most of Hollywood's work generally depicts other races in a glowing light without hesitation. But when it comes to Arabs, the shame is, the 'negative' side of the portrayal is downright propaganda most of the time, and it's
to see Arabs portrayed with a positive light unless they are portrayed with very negative light as well to 'balance it out', as if; 'this is all a part of their daily lives' when most the criticism, as a person who lives in this part of the world, is laughable at. The last movie I saw made my country look like a rural farm with goats and camels all across the road, and on top of that, made it seem like a hell hole, now one of the freest countries in the world. with the 8th most 'sinful capital'.
I think this film is just showing one aspect of Moroccan life. In Morocco I imagine you have a rich and a poor (like everywhere?), just like here in the U.S. So you can't say that those depictions aren't representive of morocco and it's people, because I assume some do live like that. The boys weren't portrayed bad; they were portrayed like boys. Boys behave irresponsibly. You're being moralistic and overly sensitive. Hollywood does have a history of negative depictions, especially in the past.

Hey, thanks for the history lesson! Now I have a whole new race of people to hate. You are the first Berber I have ever spoke with and already I don't like your people. I always thought that Morrocans were cool. I guess I was wrong. By the way, Babel was made by some greaseball in Mexico.
@candyman220 Well, your not doing any better. Your blaming the "americans" for generalising, and your doing it yourself by saying "Stupid fat country killers of children". Ironic huh?... Btw I thumbed you up.
What a beautiful movie - so emotional, so deep... and unfortunately so truthful. Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Mohamed Akhzam were amazing. Rinko Kikuchi was special one. She should have won the Oscar that year. I still can't believe talentless Jennifer Hudson won it.
I'm looking for people to take part in a university study of Babel and its spectatorship. Please just visit my profile for more info and a link to the survey. Thanks!
Yes, the police found them. The woman had left them under a tree, but when she came back there together with the police, the children were gone. After she was taken to the Police station, she was told that they found the kids.
this movie is really great ! Even if the race and the word are different, everyone is inhabitant in the same earth. I think that it is a grand story (3u0)
This movie has a masterful and thou8ght-provoking plot. If you don't 'get it' then watch the film again. It helps if you know a bit about chaos theory - all the action of the story happens because a Japanese businessman gives a rifle as a gift to a Moroccan tribesman - cause and effect.
The cast is well-chosen and nobody over-acts - they are all totally believable. No wonder it was nominated for so many awards.
this is my least favorite movie of all time. it just goes to show you in THREE HOURS OF BOREDOM that 'we are all the same, we are all miserable'. avoid it at all costs
I found that this movie might make people think they witnessed some insightful view on society and how small actions can cause so wide spreading effects and that we all should pay more attention to our surrounding and what not... bla, bla, bla. But I think the only thing this movie shows is how ignorant humanity has gotten because of their brainwashed society of sexual dominance, to make such shitty attempts at a "deep" movie. Enjoy your movie people, enjoy... I feel alone. :(
I just saw this movie. I had high hopes for it, because everyone said it was so deep and well arranged. IMHO this movie is none of it. It's just plain stupid and overtly exaggerated in so many ways. I study psychology and I never thought about this movie, simply because there isn't much to think about. But I thought a lot about what effect this movie caused in the minds of the people who watched it who said it was great. (Read on above...)
was on british ch4 a few weeks ago.. try iplayer... brilliant film.. first time i ever watched... got the cd for the music soundtrak from amazon.... brilliant!!!!
i dont understand what the moroccan kid wanking over his sister had to do with anything? it was sick and twisted....on the other hand i did think it was a good movie.
This is basically a rehash of Amores Perros. The 'apparently unrelated storylines that all end up being tied to the same incident/object' type of film is only interesting the first time you see one. Alejandro González needs to get some new ideas.
I watched this on Channel 4 last night also. I thought it was a poor film, but I liked it anyway. I think the message was that Americans are the best people in the world and you should not trust foreigners. The Arabs were stupid peasants, the Japanese were cold and insensitive, and the Mexicans were selfish. The Mexican maid was only concerned about getting deported after leaving those blond children to die in the desert. Even the British tourists were shown to be cowards.
The maid was self absorbed and did not care properly for the children. The Morrocan father was irresponsible giving a rifle to such immature boys. The Japanese father was unable to deal with his daughter. There really was no plot. The film just depicted non-Americans as lacking humanity. The only thread was the .270 rifle. The fact that they traced it back to Japan from Morroco was total fantasy. You would have needed Interpol to pull that off. It was a bad film.
Deep? If this film had any depth it wouldn't have had starred Brad Pitt. Have you seen "Meet Joe Black"? How about "Fight Club"? Both movies fell apart in the last 15 minutes. They died looking for a purpose. "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" has a lot of inner meaning too, huh? You sound like a phoney. There is no hidden meaning to this film. It was just made to expose people like you who think they are sophisticated. This film was about a Japanese girl's muff. Nothing more, nothing less.
You what? Brad Pitts performance was amazing. All actors do different kinds of films, but I'd love you to redo that scene where he's on the phone to his kids, I'm sure you could do better?
I never said there was a hidden meaning to the film, it lets you make your own mind up, come up with your own meanings. In fact, who said a film HAD to have a meaning? All I know is it effected a lot of people. But obviously not you (because you're a bore)
& I correct myself, you have the depth of a puddle.
You are just trying to impress your peers pretending to be sophisticated. This film sucked. As Peter Bradshaw from The Gaurdian would say,"Iñárritu has been such an exciting film-maker until now, but in simply repeating the narrative device, he looks like a one-trick pony and Babel has the unfortunate effect of retrospectively diminishing the value of his previous two films. It is less than the sum of its grandiose parts, while remaining bloated with its own euphoric spiritual pain." I agree.
I used to watch Siskel & Ebert until I realized that they were only giving good reviews to films with sub-titles. Most reviewers won't attack trendy writers and directors for fear of losing cred amongst their peers. Check out "Rotten Tomatoes". It has a range of reviews. The UK Gaurdian slated the movie. The Gaurdian is a super liberal paper that ususally aims to please the artsy crowd. Don't get me wrong, I liked the film. I also liked "Close Encounters". Both were badly made.
I didn't look at any reviews for the film...all I did was watch it and enjoy it. I was moved by it. If you want to look at it from some shoddy academic point of view then don't bother talking to me, if I like something I like it. End of story.
I'm not trying to impress anyone. I like the film. Do you know what Babel means? It means confusion. The film isn't necassarily meant to mean anything in the slightest. But you're being a moron trying to disregard anyone who actually likes the movie.
I won't talk to you anymore. You are the one who starting calling names. I just offered my opinion on the film and since you didn't agree, you attacked me personally. I never crititize anybody on the Tube unless they rip on me first. You think someone who has a different point of view is less of a person than you. You are a Facist. Enjoy your reign of power with the rest of your phoney friends. Your time is coming to an end. It has happened before. It will happen again.
I attacked you personally? I'm sorry, you started trolling about the people who like the movie as if they're phonies, which is bullshit and totally stupid. If anything you're "fascist" if you don't like the movie you don't have to have anything to do with it, you're free to fuck off any time you like.
Wrong Missey! I just added a comment that you didn't like and you replied with a remark about my shallowness. You could have said "Let me explain what I think this movie is trying to say....". But you didn't, because you can't. I have read this entire blog and nobody has even given a hint of
what the film is trying to say. People like you just resort to anger and name calling because you don't have the intelligence to make a proper argument let alone comprehend an Art Film.
No, I think you are extremely shallow. The way you look at things you must be extremely depressed.
Like I said, the film doesn't have to MEAN anything. People relate to the struggles. But to me, the film highlights a complete breakdown of communication and the chaos it results in. There you go.
In the 70's, young idealists like myself were looking for meanings of David Bowie songs. I found out later that Bowie was getting his lyrics by cutting words out of magazines, throwing them up in the air and sticking them together to make a song. I think that is what the film makers did with "Babel".
This was the best movie I watched in ages, watched it on C4, never even heard of it, up until now. it was deep, emotional and GOOD. Truly fantastic plot and acting
Those people who don't like this movie probably have a shallow mind and don't understand the meaning of the story. This movie is a masterpiece! This is actually one of my top list of best movies I've seen. Perhaps those who don't like this are big fans of cheesy romantic movies--like Twilight. LOL
The film is brilliant on so many levels. I only just see now the thing about human communication after Arekux pointed it out, but i think that is totally true and in so combining all different elements such as both peoples physical and pyschological isolation, the director has achieved a great thing.
I don't understand people who don't get the idea of this movie. It's brilliant. And beautiful music. There should be more as unique movies as this. These days most movies that people produce are same crap with no meaning.
I just finished watching this. Ok it was a good movie althought but there were still some clips that they could have cut out like those nude parts and little kid wanking. Still I recomend this it is totally something new.
i liked this movie but first 5 min there is only arabic people doing cool stuff and some kid wanking...i was like "wtf is he doin..? shitting..oh no..ohh shit"
Great movie!, for those people that don´t understand the message of the film: This is about emotions that doesn´t need translation, it´s about real drama and pain that hits to any person in the world, no matter race, country or status, the tragedy is the same for everyone and all characters are human beings, with qualities and defects aiwthout fake poses and special efects or heroisms, life hits very hard to people everyday and we have to deal with it.
although what you said was touching, you're wrong.
this movie is about the necessity and the impossibility of human communication, as you can see the couple in morocco struggling to have an ambulance coming to save them, the nanny and the children in the middle of the dessert with no help whatsoever trying to find someone to help 'em. And of course the most obvious is the one of chioko, the japanese girl who is deaf and cannot communicate with the world.
I just don't get why people are so against this movie. I think it has been a while since I watch a good movie, with a real meaning and good actors, not like movies these days.
So the white people almost lose their children in the desert, the morrocan boy's brother gets SHOT twice by the feds, and the horny jap girl... doesn't get laid? Lmao. It seems like they left some parts of this movie unfinished; so many unanswered questions, oh well it was still pretty good. It would have been cooler if Yussef killed all the cops with the rifle though..he's a helluva good shot.
KisakuReindan no to grieve but Morocco it has of hospital! of hotel! schools as you therefore if you has ever come here to Morocco do not consider it okéé!! and I am indeed according to that you say that you have never known of other country has part your!!
alex ruch 55even if I definitely understood your text me say that the film Babel is against Morocco and gives a wrong picture on him !!! sorry i dont speak very good english i speak just french ^^
This is probely to greatest film ever made. This is my favorite movie. This movie has a great message and it shows that everyone connects in a way that people cant understand. Amazing film. 5/5 stars.
great film, I think that idea is that everything and all people are connected, if we wish to understand each other and life itself and finally our destiny, we need to get bigger, wider picture...ego can only see divided world, soul can see the wholeness

i understood Pitt was in a quandry but he was so abrupt to the sitter; he wasn't bad tho otherwise he would've pressed charges.
the border patrol were sickening and god help me but i wanted to hit the little girl for saying "no" to the question.
the Japanese story was very touching, that poor girl is in sooo much pain. i believe that she was the one who wanted to jump off the balcony.

hicker233 2 years ago

What a beautiful movie - so emotional, so deep... and unfortunately so truthful. Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Mohamed Akhzam were amazing. Rinko Kikuchi was special one. She should have won the Oscar that year. I still can't believe talentless Jennifer Hudson won it.
I recommend this brilliant film to everyone

Great and advisable movie.
Complete and fulfilled without exaggerated action or sex.
It shows the world's dark and sad sides, which people try to avoid and to ignore.
I loved it. I hope there will be more movies produced like that!

megatroll 2 years ago
I just saw this movie. I had high hopes for it, because everyone said it was so deep and well arranged. IMHO this movie is none of it. It's just plain stupid and overtly exaggerated in so many ways. I study psychology and I never thought about this movie, simply because there isn't much to think about. But I thought a lot about what effect this movie caused in the minds of the people who watched it who said it was great. (Read on above...)

Rozziio91 2 years ago
edybudokai 2 years ago
Rozziio91 2 years ago
edybudokai 2 years ago
hicker233 2 years ago
edybudokai 2 years ago
lucia8885 2 years ago 3

This is basically a rehash of Amores Perros. The 'apparently unrelated storylines that all end up being tied to the same incident/object' type of film is only interesting the first time you see one. Alejandro González needs to get some new ideas.

tommyddoolin 2 years ago
I watched this on Channel 4 last night also. I thought it was a poor film, but I liked it anyway. I think the message was that Americans are the best people in the world and you should not trust foreigners. The Arabs were stupid peasants, the Japanese were cold and insensitive, and the Mexicans were selfish. The Mexican maid was only concerned about getting deported after leaving those blond children to die in the desert. Even the British tourists were shown to be cowards.
Janko1492 2 years ago
you cant be serious about that message....!
yesshes18 2 years ago
The maid was self absorbed and did not care properly for the children. The Morrocan father was irresponsible giving a rifle to such immature boys. The Japanese father was unable to deal with his daughter. There really was no plot. The film just depicted non-Americans as lacking humanity. The only thread was the .270 rifle. The fact that they traced it back to Japan from Morroco was total fantasy. You would have needed Interpol to pull that off. It was a bad film.
Janko1492 2 years ago
You've got the depth of a paddle pool.
nicck 2 years ago
Janko1492 2 years ago
& I correct myself, you have the depth of a puddle.
nicck 2 years ago
You are just trying to impress your peers pretending to be sophisticated. This film sucked. As Peter Bradshaw from The Gaurdian would say,"Iñárritu has been such an exciting film-maker until now, but in simply repeating the narrative device, he looks like a one-trick pony and Babel has the unfortunate effect of retrospectively diminishing the value of his previous two films. It is less than the sum of its grandiose parts, while remaining bloated with its own euphoric spiritual pain." I agree.
Janko1492 2 years ago
Seriously, IMDB rated it over 8..
johnbleek 2 years ago
I used to watch Siskel & Ebert until I realized that they were only giving good reviews to films with sub-titles. Most reviewers won't attack trendy writers and directors for fear of losing cred amongst their peers. Check out "Rotten Tomatoes". It has a range of reviews. The UK Gaurdian slated the movie. The Gaurdian is a super liberal paper that ususally aims to please the artsy crowd. Don't get me wrong, I liked the film. I also liked "Close Encounters". Both were badly made.
Janko1492 2 years ago
I didn't look at any reviews for the film...all I did was watch it and enjoy it. I was moved by it. If you want to look at it from some shoddy academic point of view then don't bother talking to me, if I like something I like it. End of story.
nicck 2 years ago
I'm not trying to impress anyone. I like the film. Do you know what Babel means? It means confusion. The film isn't necassarily meant to mean anything in the slightest. But you're being a moron trying to disregard anyone who actually likes the movie.
nicck 2 years ago
I won't talk to you anymore. You are the one who starting calling names. I just offered my opinion on the film and since you didn't agree, you attacked me personally. I never crititize anybody on the Tube unless they rip on me first. You think someone who has a different point of view is less of a person than you. You are a Facist. Enjoy your reign of power with the rest of your phoney friends. Your time is coming to an end. It has happened before. It will happen again.
Janko1492 2 years ago
I attacked you personally? I'm sorry, you started trolling about the people who like the movie as if they're phonies, which is bullshit and totally stupid. If anything you're "fascist" if you don't like the movie you don't have to have anything to do with it, you're free to fuck off any time you like.
nicck 2 years ago
Wrong Missey! I just added a comment that you didn't like and you replied with a remark about my shallowness. You could have said "Let me explain what I think this movie is trying to say....". But you didn't, because you can't. I have read this entire blog and nobody has even given a hint of
what the film is trying to say. People like you just resort to anger and name calling because you don't have the intelligence to make a proper argument let alone comprehend an Art Film.
Janko1492 2 years ago
No, I think you are extremely shallow. The way you look at things you must be extremely depressed.
Like I said, the film doesn't have to MEAN anything. People relate to the struggles. But to me, the film highlights a complete breakdown of communication and the chaos it results in. There you go.
nicck 2 years ago
I mean, I already told you what Babel means. This film teaches valuable lessons and thankfully it's okay for most of the characters at the end.
The whole movie is based on communication, judgement and even morals in a sense. Geez.
nicck 2 years ago
In the 70's, young idealists like myself were looking for meanings of David Bowie songs. I found out later that Bowie was getting his lyrics by cutting words out of magazines, throwing them up in the air and sticking them together to make a song. I think that is what the film makers did with "Babel".
Janko1492 2 years ago
There's meaning in many Bowie songs, but at the end of the day...a good tune is a good tune.

The film is brilliant on so many levels. I only just see now the thing about human communication after Arekux pointed it out, but i think that is totally true and in so combining all different elements such as both peoples physical and pyschological isolation, the director has achieved a great thing.

Great movie!, for those people that don´t understand the message of the film: This is about emotions that doesn´t need translation, it´s about real drama and pain that hits to any person in the world, no matter race, country or status, the tragedy is the same for everyone and all characters are human beings, with qualities and defects aiwthout fake poses and special efects or heroisms, life hits very hard to people everyday and we have to deal with it.
xhonasvky 2 years ago 3
although what you said was touching, you're wrong.
this movie is about the necessity and the impossibility of human communication, as you can see the couple in morocco struggling to have an ambulance coming to save them, the nanny and the children in the middle of the dessert with no help whatsoever trying to find someone to help 'em. And of course the most obvious is the one of chioko, the japanese girl who is deaf and cannot communicate with the world.
