ubuntu has to be by far the best developed, most user friendly Linux distro out right now. Now, I'm going to get a lot of crap from the linux gurus out there for that comment, but for the average, intermediate user, this can do just about everything you can think of with ease.
it also has a gui (graphical interface) for just about everything, so it's easier to transition to. you won't have to dive into much code/command prompt at all for most of what you will probably use it for.
would you recommend this to those that are intermediate with computers but know almost nothing about code writing/ merging partitions and all the other technical aspects of computing?
yes. very much so. Ubuntu is really easy to install. If you have any problems using it, a simple post on the forums will work. You will usually receive a response within 24 hours of posting.
Just don't do like a lot of people and expect it to BE Windows. It's not made by a corporation and provided poor support (you rely on the community for good volunteer support though any problem you have has probably already been answered on the forum) and it's not a drop in replacement so you'll have to learn new things. I started by dual booting, loved it on day 2, never used by Windows partition again by week 2.
You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. How about downloading it and testing it out before blurting out dumb remarks. It has quite literally thousands of available apps, many of which are developed by large, successful communities of thousands of programmers and even large companies such as Sun Microsystems. And all of it's free as compared to 300+ dollars for M$ products. Again, you have no idea what you are talking about. Get your facts straight and then try again.

My first linux distribution was slackware, and back then everyone should compile all the packages of the os to run it, also i have compiled the kernel several times , but thats geek stuff i dont spend my time for bullshit
I think it comes with more than enough apps, and the ones it comes with are all general purpose. They shouldn't be including anything more than what they already do in my opinion.

Those who gave me thumbs down are only noobs, users that killing their time on their pcs and doing only their hobbies, cause a professional can understand what i'm talking about.
I like ubuntu but with no serious applications its useless.
Lol With a selection of tens of thousands of packages you say no serious applications? I think if you're doing genetics engineering or calculating the trajectory to the moon you'll write your own custom software anyway.
if you wanna surf the net and burn a cd its fine if you were professional you would understand that ubuntu has only poor, primitive apps of no importance.
Until the Big Software Companies think about linux , will not have good software apps.
I have linux on my netbook and its fine for surfing the net , but using it for my job would be impossible or silly !!!
I really like ubuntu linux and i hope it will have softare , WindowsSUCKS - MACOSX RULES and has great apps make the job fast and BETTER
Ah, most companies are Windows centric so FOSS is generally a no go. Especially things like graphic design where they are rated not in their skill but in how name brand and latest version their software is. If someday there are enough people using Linux and needing software, there will be enough open source developers to provide superior software to overshadow and replace the licensed software provided by companies. Unless they port it to Linux but most companies have flat out hostility to it.
There is one big reason not to port to Linux. It's not allowed by Microsoft. Dig into it's history a little and you'll see that every company that has ever crossed them has been destroyed or if it's large enough, left a shadow of it's former self like IBM.
Many companies have open disdain for open source because it's freedom and they feel if they port their software, somehow they'll be supporting the enemy philosophy.
The answer I feel is FOSS community which can provide better software anyway

Indeed, probably the best thing to happen to GNU/Linux and the Free and Open Source Software community.

Too bad Photoshop still isn't available on linux platforms. I would also like to see Winamp (never going to happen)
The only thing that I hate is the default gnome look. If they could make it better Ubuntu would be more attractive towards first time users
JoeIbanez 2 years ago
try Kubuntu. its ubuntu, but uses the KDE desktop manager instead of gnome. much better for first time users and has a better 'WOW!' factor.
Gnome IMHO is better for productivity (or enlightenment/fluxbox...) but now im just getting too linuxy :D

The bad think is that it doesnt has many applications and has only primitive free hobbyist apps that can't help you in what you are doing.
Too pity....

With so many development software there's no reason companies not to port their applications to linux.
My netbook right know runs Xubuntu and i dont change it with anything.
But when comes to job i can't afford spending so much more time for a low quality result just to say hey i made it with linux.
I just want beside with the os development and advances to have software too.

Ubuntu will always carry brown or orange default themes. But what kind of person keeps the default theme anyway ;)
My girlfriend, for example, has her Ubuntu all Mac-styled, because she uses OSX at work ;)

the main thing about karmic koala is that it will use ext4 journaling by default, no usplash, and cloud computing (which i think is overrated)

This isn't a gnome update, but rather an Ubuntu one. Main changes will probably be non-graphics, but more under the hood.

Actually I don't like the ideas of missing the status icon next to the user name and the shutdown list goes to the "System" dropdown menu...
Any ways to change them back like the one in Ubuntu 9.04?
SandyHoldings 2 years ago 3
(right now) you just have to right click the panel and add those. So, it's just the work of like, twenty second. I, for myself like it :)
Still: the gtk theme. It's better, but why the hell don't they just use dust. It's way better.
