very interesting commentaries you make, and ur hilarious too. btw, I LOVE final fantasy 6's storyline. I haven't played many other FF games but i'm sure no other FF could beat its story.. For me the issue was that most of the characters' own stories and backstories didn't entwine with the main plotline which means you needed exposition to explain and develop the characters that had nothing to do with the main plot, often feeling like the game was going off the boil.

maybe you can't understand some of the the characters like lightning because you don't watch a lot of Japanese styled shows. there are small hint through out the game that show lightning's true character. as for orphan if you understand the code of honer in Japanese style they don't just let you kill them even if they want you to that might sound confusing, but it makes a lot of sense.

with Snow I agree with you because he believed that he was the "hero" but it happens in all games, the same thing with Fang ... Hope as he was14, he was still a kid who had never lived a danger and he was confused and angry with snow because of his mother's death .sazh was most of the time looking for the person responsible for what happend with his son. He also looked like a man with much experience of life and he was madethe only adult in the game with 40 years.

Yeah I see your an ff6 fan yeah that's my favorite final fantasy also. I do agree that this is one of the better newer ff's but it does have one of the most complicating story's ever and it was so hard the bosses on this game are just fukin hard. Now I don't think it's even possible for square to make a game better than ff6 now that is but i hope they do. I actually did like the ending except for the whole vanille and fang still being crystalized pissed me off.
hmm, the story was hard to understand at first, but at the same time it's hard to fairly judge the story when admittedly the datalogs have been skipped. When taken into consideration it makes a pretty well thought out presentation that is hard to forget.
The character analysis is subjective, and I think the entire cast has redeeming points that can be more accurately described than just "bitchy and whiny" lol.
Don't forget other parts to an FF game too! The music and art were both stunning!!
I will end with saying that setting the bar at Final Fantasy 6 or with me it would be Final Fantasy 7 makes it extremely difficult to even try. Those games are so much better than any other it makes it extremely difficult to reinvent what those were.
The games ending really makes this game need a sequel.
I never had to grind in my playthrough, it's all about paradigm setup.

Orphan doesn't let you kill him because Ragnarok has to do the deed and he has to cause despair and pain and suffering to make fang/vanille turn into him.

I felt the story was good, but not the best FF game story, the characters were okay but not that interesting I have to admit. The battle system was good, but the damn enemies were so hard. Graphics were amazing. Music was great. World was linear but I can live with that. Side-Missions were tedious and the stones and monsters were in such out-of-the way places. The Side-Missions really detached you from the story. Overall I enjoyed it, though it isn't the best FF game I played
FF12 sacrificed linearity for story and that game sucked. FF13 was a lot more focused narrative wise and it was a lot more enjoyable for me, although somewhat confusing.

Phil, if you made me love anything during this whole playthrough you've made me love you. Screw the game. I absolutely agree with all of your final thoughts. Square Enix definitely missed the mark in terms of story on this game. It seems this is a trend they've been going into. Ever played Dissidia? Terrible story. FFVII: Crisis Core... was ok but not epic. Gameplay in XIII is great though.
I agree on the character's not being likable. Lighting is the only one that is remotely likable IMO. Vanille is childish and annoying, Hope is a whiney bitch (like you said), Snow is a gung-ho idiot, Sazh is the token ethnic minority comic relief, and Fang basically has zero personality. It seems she's just there so you can have an even 6-person party.

-In the Japanese, there were characters I could attach myself to. Why? Again, the voice acting. It gave life to the characters and drew me to certain ones. Even more odd: My favorite character? Vanille.
-English FF Vanille's pisses me off to no end. Sad huh? Remember, I watched this AFTER watching the Japanese version.
-Like I said before, just bad. Orphan? Yeah. Made more sense in Japanese. Rage, sadness needed for Ragnarok was clear. Not so clear in the English. The list goes on and on.
-The reason why it was so confusing was again, an issue of them changing some things to "westernize" it. The story made perfect sense to me when I watched a Japanese play through. Looking at the English though, the story made hardly any sense without all the subtle cues and even various things brought on by the characters.
-The voice acting blew. Let's just face it. The story was enhanced for me in the Japanese. In the English, it made me hate everyone, like Phil said. No one to attach to.
The only reason they killed Orphan was to complete their Focus. But they would have to destroy Cocoon except they destroyed it in their own way, in other words loopholes and they technically did destroy Cocoon. The story is cryptic you just have to pay attention and think deeply, also you don't even need to read the Datalogs those are optional.
the points you made would have been more valid if you actually showed an effort to try to understand the game or at least have the brain power to piece things together without the game blatantly showing you everything in plain sight. don't be too quick to judge just because the storyline might be too deep for you.
supposedly the only way to truly destroy fal'cie (including orphan) is through ragnarok. i thought even the barthandalus told you that. with that said, orphan wants to die so to achieve it he has to fight you in earnest to let your anger and despair turn you into ragnarok. does that make sense now?
Good god man the reason Orphan fought back WAS explained. Pay closer attention to the game. The Fal'cie couldnt kill themselves, all they could do was follow their specific function (or focus if you prefer). Letting you kill them would interfere with that function so they have no choice but to defend themselves even though they want to die.
but still at the end of the day I'm entitled to my opinion which is FF7 sucks compared to FF6

@KanameTousen Obviously, no one plans to make movies and sequels to games the day they are released unless its obvious in the game like..*Spoilers* Kratos stabs himself and dies in the end of GOWIII then his body suddenly disappears. They have already 5 thousand other things to do. For instance, Square has FFXV coming out this year and are still working on versus not to mention Agito (and possibly a FFVII remake but probably not).

It didn't have an intresting storyline it just copy pasted 6's story line partly except that in 6 Locke(the guy in the love triangle) gets over the death of his girlfriend(who was in a state of near death until she finally dies after he cures her from an illness she had) in 6 instead of Terra(who's basically the mold for Aeris) being killed she becomes more powerful being using her ancient blood lines powers and saves the world

I really like FFX it had great characters (like Auron) and a gripping storyline in my opinion. The whole fear against sin and the element a sacrifice really drew me into the story, and compelled me to play on.
Orphan wanted one of them to turn Ragnarok, so that he could be killed by Ragnarok and then Ragnarok could destroy Cocoon and kill all the people in it. That sacrifice would be enough to summon the maker.
I'd argue that Sazh is likable. He loses his wife, then fights to save his son, almost kills himself when said son turns to crystal, and and somehow finds a way to forgive the person most responsible for his son's misfortune. And like you mentioned, he's funny.
But I agree that Final Fantasy VI is the best of the series. It had the best music, the most interesting villain (Kefka), and a great romance (Locke/Celes).

I agree. I remember watching an article in Playstation underground (if you ever had that magazine you know what I mean) about video game music. They said since they didn't have the technology to make the best music they tried to make tunes that were memorable instead. But once they were able to put better music on tha games they moved away from that.
Maybe it's the same with story in that since they had to make a great story so people would buy but now they're moving away from that for graphics?

I will end with saying that setting the bar at Final Fantasy 6 or with me it would be Final Fantasy 7 makes it extremely difficult to even try. Those games are so much better than any other it makes it extremely difficult to reinvent what those were.

Ok, here is some counterpoints to your own.
The games ending really makes this game need a sequel.
I never had to grind in my playthrough, it's all about paradigm setup.
Ok just like movies you have to listen to what's going on for the story.
Orphan doesn't let you kill him because Ragnarok has to do the deed and he has to cause despair and pain and suffering to make fang/vanille turn into him.
I agree that graphics don't make games.
I latched on to shadow from FF6 lol.

I felt the story was good, but not the best FF game story, the characters were okay but not that interesting I have to admit. The battle system was good, but the damn enemies were so hard. Graphics were amazing. Music was great. World was linear but I can live with that. Side-Missions were tedious and the stones and monsters were in such out-of-the way places. The Side-Missions really detached you from the story. Overall I enjoyed it, though it isn't the best FF game I played

FF12 sacrificed linearity for story and that game sucked. FF13 was a lot more focused narrative wise and it was a lot more enjoyable for me, although somewhat confusing.

Your total playthrough of the main game, with all the grinding, was 50 hours? Geez..... I trained a fair amount, but my total playtime when I beat the last boss was 80 hours. Ouch. I hope I'm not the only one :|

Phil, if you made me love anything during this whole playthrough you've made me love you. Screw the game. I absolutely agree with all of your final thoughts. Square Enix definitely missed the mark in terms of story on this game. It seems this is a trend they've been going into. Ever played Dissidia? Terrible story. FFVII: Crisis Core... was ok but not epic. Gameplay in XIII is great though.

I agree on the character's not being likable. Lighting is the only one that is remotely likable IMO. Vanille is childish and annoying, Hope is a whiney bitch (like you said), Snow is a gung-ho idiot, Sazh is the token ethnic minority comic relief, and Fang basically has zero personality. It seems she's just there so you can have an even 6-person party.

-In the Japanese, there were characters I could attach myself to. Why? Again, the voice acting. It gave life to the characters and drew me to certain ones. Even more odd: My favorite character? Vanille.
-English FF Vanille's pisses me off to no end. Sad huh? Remember, I watched this AFTER watching the Japanese version.
-Like I said before, just bad. Orphan? Yeah. Made more sense in Japanese. Rage, sadness needed for Ragnarok was clear. Not so clear in the English. The list goes on and on.

-The reason why it was so confusing was again, an issue of them changing some things to "westernize" it. The story made perfect sense to me when I watched a Japanese play through. Looking at the English though, the story made hardly any sense without all the subtle cues and even various things brought on by the characters.
-The voice acting blew. Let's just face it. The story was enhanced for me in the Japanese. In the English, it made me hate everyone, like Phil said. No one to attach to.

Well I just finished watching your videos all the way through and a few comments:
- I would agree with most of what you said in your assessment at the end of the game. Quite fair-minded and accurate, I would say.
- The biggest problem that I had with the game led to a lot of your conclusions/problems with the game. This was: The voice acting.
-Like you said, the older 2d FF games had great plot. This plot was not bad, but it had issues being ported over to English.

The only reason they killed Orphan was to complete their Focus. But they would have to destroy Cocoon except they destroyed it in their own way, in other words loopholes and they technically did destroy Cocoon. The story is cryptic you just have to pay attention and think deeply, also you don't even need to read the Datalogs those are optional.

Good god man the reason Orphan fought back WAS explained. Pay closer attention to the game. The Fal'cie couldnt kill themselves, all they could do was follow their specific function (or focus if you prefer). Letting you kill them would interfere with that function so they have no choice but to defend themselves even though they want to die.

@KanameTousen Obviously, no one plans to make movies and sequels to games the day they are released unless its obvious in the game like..*Spoilers* Kratos stabs himself and dies in the end of GOWIII then his body suddenly disappears. They have already 5 thousand other things to do. For instance, Square has FFXV coming out this year and are still working on versus not to mention Agito (and possibly a FFVII remake but probably not).

FF6? Oh come on Phil, Final Fantasy 7 was better with Cloud, most things i disagree, the characters yes were bad, but the reason was because the plot was to quick, and Square Enix felt like they had to rush that and i know that was bad. But Phil you have to give the game the benefit of the doubt, i just thought that this time you were being to critical of the game to understand that it was perhaps better than most FF's..

@Crazyfrankie666 Cloud was a bad character for 2/3rds of the game he though he was Zack, he wanted Aeris who obiviously was still in love with Zack, Sephrioth didn't even do anything(compared to Kefka who killed over a million people and left the world in RUINS!) Phil gave 60 hours of his life to playing this game....he gave it the benefit of the doubt! He played this game to completion he grinded when he felt it was needed. He says it sucks he's entitled to opinion!

I gave 35 hours of my time to the game as well, but if Phil didint like the game he should have stopped playing it in the first place. Cloud was not even bad on 2/3rds of the game but even though he loved Aeris who she loved Zack it atleast had an interesting storyline than

It didn't have an intresting storyline it just copy pasted 6's story line partly except that in 6 Locke(the guy in the love triangle) gets over the death of his girlfriend(who was in a state of near death until she finally dies after he cures her from an illness she had) in 6 instead of Terra(who's basically the mold for Aeris) being killed she becomes more powerful being using her ancient blood lines powers and saves the world

BOTH were top rank soldiers for their respective governments both went nuts, Kefka cause he was experimented on and Seph cause he found out he was an experiment using Jenova cells
Kefka used his powers to take the power of the gods and ruin the world for the lulz
Seph went rouge and attempted to end the world but only killed about 50 people including Aeris before he was brought down by Cloud

@Crazyfrankie666 Dude the killing millions thing was just the MID POINT OF THE GAME. from there you saw the aftermath of people trying to pick up their lives, you hear tales of the millions of people left homeless and lonely now worshiping the new god that Kefka had become, FF6 if you ever played it to completion(which it's now obvious you didn't) had a sequence where you had to participate in an opera and remember lines. It also had grinnding, power ups and other elements like that

I really like FFX it had great characters (like Auron) and a gripping storyline in my opinion. The whole fear against sin and the element a sacrifice really drew me into the story, and compelled me to play on.

Orphan wanted one of them to turn Ragnarok, so that he could be killed by Ragnarok and then Ragnarok could destroy Cocoon and kill all the people in it. That sacrifice would be enough to summon the maker.

I'd argue that Sazh is likable. He loses his wife, then fights to save his son, almost kills himself when said son turns to crystal, and and somehow finds a way to forgive the person most responsible for his son's misfortune. And like you mentioned, he's funny.
But I agree that Final Fantasy VI is the best of the series. It had the best music, the most interesting villain (Kefka), and a great romance (Locke/Celes).

I agree. I remember watching an article in Playstation underground (if you ever had that magazine you know what I mean) about video game music. They said since they didn't have the technology to make the best music they tried to make tunes that were memorable instead. But once they were able to put better music on tha games they moved away from that.
Maybe it's the same with story in that since they had to make a great story so people would buy but now they're moving away from that for graphics?
