  • it sounds good.

    we play sakura sakura ,too.

  • Красиво

  • I very much agree with ladyinblacklace.

  • it's so pretty ...

(it has this weird feeling like, a mix between road's theme from d.gray-man and 'come little children' or whatever it's called from hocus pocus~. and then it adds an extra level of magic and the result is this and it sounds amazing.)

  • this is so beautiful

  • Uống được chén trà của nó chắc chết vì khát quá....

  • I believe you "feel" the song more without lyrics,it speaks with the soul not with the words.

  • the wooden flute is called a shakuhachi. traditionaly this song is also played with a koto.

  • @scarroll66 I believe Shakuhachi are traditionally made from Bamboo, though.

  • mor than romantisism... amazing..

  • i love it <3

  • Absolutely beautiful. You surely have a lot of fantastic folk music in Japan:)

  • the wind instrument is a bamboo flute right?

  • ^O^ Kaori believes this song is really nice~ Makes me wish i had my old keyboard to play it on... Makes me regret i sold it.

  • now, now, Kaori, why did you sell it? :(

  • i have this song on my piano!lol i love the song!

  • Amazing Video!

Have bought today my second Quena, because with my old, I am not able to blow the last 3 holes (from the tune DO, downwards).

    Still not working!

Could anyone help me? Wy am I not able to blow a tone from the third hole down?

  • Hi Loomitt,

Make sure all holes are closed tightly with your fingers and blow softly when you play low notes, especially lower than "DO"

    Doppo

  • hi doppo,

    thank you for your answer.

    will try it today.

    best regards

  • @Loomitt77 hey, place the quena on your chin, then use your tongue to apply gentle pressure on your lip to seal the quena. (easier said than done) now the higher notes the Quena needs to tilted lower and lower notes (three notes) the quena is tilted upward. if that makes sense, if you can play the high notes, blow then lower the quena and cover the last three holes. should work if i have explained it properly.

  • Let us Japanese decide for ourselves whether this melody sounds "sucky" when it's not sung. The traditional melody means more than that to us than for it to just be sung and it is right to maintain that spirit in different interpretations with traditional Japanese instruments playing the melody, out of all things.

  • I thought the traditional melody had BOTH singing and instruments.

  • It can be performed with or without singing. You may not know this considering what you are saying here, but Japan has an instrumental tradition, such as with solo Koto music akin to solo piano music and arrangements in Europe.

Your statement makes as much sense to me as someone complaining about a brass quintet playing the national anthem as being "sucky" because there isn't someone singing in it.

  • Wow... beatiful song... I love it. When i lived in japan, i used to hear it lots of times... so many memories....

  • purdy

  • I know the lyrics, there really deep sometimes XD

  • I feel tired after listening to it, I get a headache at 1:20. I am not saying this to offend the video, but I feel ill listening to this. I am not sure if its sadness, but I feel hurt.

  • I feel the same way, but I don't know why either.... Its so beautiful and peaceful though ne?

  • I honestly think its the key its played in. In the movie "Amadeus", when Mozart played a certain song in a certain key, the dogs howled. When he played the same song, different key signature, the dogs stopped howling, so perhaps it's the notes themselves, not the song?

  • Judging by their white turban, is this a funeral song?

  • no it is not a funeral.

  • What exactly do they mean when they say the flute is in Locrian mode?

I know the synth section of "YYZ" is in Locrian but I have no idea what it means. What is Locrian?

  • basically, it is a scale starting on Ti

Ti Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti

modes were a way of describing scales in the medieval times. Modes were primarily used in church music, and people avoided Locrian because it's tonic chord was a diminished chord, so it sounded very dissonant (as evident by people asking if this is a funeral song) and was said to be of the devil.

  • beautiful

  • If this is the song of cherry (spring ) festival, why there is so much melancholy in the tune?

  • yes, i wonder that too. sad and delicate song like rain falling on blossoms.

but then song like Sukiyaki sung by Kyu Sakamoto is sad song that sounds very cheerful. ???

    beautiful playing Doppo, bravo :-)

  • My Japanese teacher told our class that it was because the song is relating the beautiful sakura trees to the soldiers in Japan who were marching off to fight in WWI. The song's message is that no matter how beautiful something is, it will fade away, just as the cherry blossoms only last a little while before falling to the floor, and just as many of those "beautiful" young men were going out to meet their deaths.

  • i've always loved this song since i was little

  • we also study this, nice song, love it.

  • We're studying this song as of now.

  • This a song of the spring festival when the cherry flowers burst into blossom. Then why there is a sad note flowing through the song? Whether there is a latent pain among all happinesses?

  • i heard this song in my middle school music class lol

  • I have a side ways bamboo flute, but no matter, how I stick the paper, no sound.

  • i like sakura and arirang (korean song). they're both very beautiful.

  • I sang Arirang for my District Festival with my school chorus. Gorgeous song; I never got tired of it.
