I use an outback in Australia, I have the 3.0 H6 premium. Absolutly fantastic car, the only thing they can do to make it better is A, offer the H6 in manual, or dual-range in automatic and B, offer it in Diesel for the Aussie market.
It's all about CID cubic inch displacement... A 6 is going to use more gas than a 4. If gas savings is what you want get the subaru 4 boxer less power due to less CID less cylinders but you will save gas
I really wish more car companies would put flat-mounted engines in their cars. They're amazingly smooth, relatively efficient (though the 3.0 H6 is really thirsty), and they've got boatloads of low-end torque.

It burns a lot of gas! SUBARU, MAKE THE NEXT MODEL USING LESS GAS!!! DO IT!
