I have a terrible concern about running over squirrels. That's half the reason I'm 18 and don't even have a learners permit yet, I'm not interesting in accidentally murdering anything. And my family will take in or at least feed, injured squirrels whenever we come upon them. Not everyone's a heartless bastard...

The reason why some people cry at their pets dying compared to when a family member dies, is mainly on how close the person was to the two. If your pet was a loyal and friendly companion, that greeted you everyday, played with you everyday, and all that. You'll tend to care for them more than that jackass brother who ignores you, bullies you, calls you a pest and does nothing with you. This isn't based on a true story, but the concept is the same.
Found a dead squirrel when I was a kid. I gave that little guy a proper burial. In all honesty, my dog is my best friend, though. I'd choose her over almost any human I've met so far. Humans are fucked up, they lie to you, degrade you, talk smack behind your back, and all that jazz. My dog cuddles with me when I'm sick, listens to things I have to say, whether she gets it or not, and chooses me over anyone including other dogs. Screw backstabbing people, I have a loving, loyal companion.
I have to say, I love my dog, and consider him to be a part of my family, but his death would certainly be no where near as painful as having my sister or of one my parents die. We really arent that superior without tools. We don't really have natural weapons or good protection. Also we are much weaker and more breakable than other species. I agree with everything that Foamy said, despite the fact that I am an avid animal lover. It's insane how people barely care about each other, yet would give their live for an animal. However, if there was a movie like Jackass where animals were being hurt, I would find it unfair for humans to torture inferior minded creatures for their own amusement. Natural human animosity. It's a built in instinct to remove all competition to our success, which naturally puts us at a more closed view of support, only caring in large part for those we rely on for survival; family, close friends, etc.
Pets, however? They're not competition. We can help them out all we want, because they don 't interfere with our survival. In fact they only enhance it.

@IAMARATEL I never turn a blind eye to the cruelties of nature, it's true animals do the same things humans do and true that they only turn out for the better if we bred them to be. Let's be thankful that not all of them are out to murder one another without constant end, but it is a brutal sight and feeling. Which is why we have good people and even good animals, yes even wild animals, that do settle differences without resorting to violence. Aside from survival, nothing kills for nothing.

We really arent that superior without tools. We don't really have natural weapons or good protection. Also we are much weaker and more breakable than other species. Most people that die (Usually the first/second/third kills) in those gory movies were jerks, anyway. The other thing is, I also rescue animals (mainly turtles) that I see alive in the middle of the road and take them to the other side so they don't get smushed.
