@samedifference123 I disagree. I've always found this theme very stately, and I feel it goes perfectly with Wimbledon. Of course, you'll ever hear it again on YouTube, since NBC lost the broadcast rights.
I have occasionally heard snippets of the BBC theme in US broadcasts. It is aptly named "Light And Tuneful" because it does sound more light-hearted than the NBC theme, which sounded military the first time I heard it. But the NBC theme does have a lovely but rarely-shown middle section (not shown in the clip above) that seems to take you down memory lane, and is usually shown with a montage of past champions. Search youtube for 1991 wimbledon opening to hear to complete piece.
Certainly seems like the NBC theme takes the event more seriously than the BBC theme. But still, who cares? Why snipe about something as stupid as that? If you don't like the NBC theme, you don't have to listen to it. Stick with the BBC.
I were to list everything the various British media get wrong about the United States, I'd be here all day (the writers of Doctor Who and Torchwood haven't the faintest, for example). But you know what? I don't sweat it.
Anyone know where the closing theme is? The one that plays right when NBC goes to a commercial break immediately after the match is over? It also has trumpets but I'm not sure what it is...
it's not tennisfan81's closing theme vid, either...
What is it with fucking British cunts going to videos of everything American-based and exclaiming "The Bri-ish version is beh-uh?"
Talk about a self-conscious nation...poor turds have such feelings of inferiority their citizens have to proclaim their superiority over everything that has to do with "America."
@EmceeNolan since when were british saying that just because our theme song for wimbledon is better, we are a better country. your stereotype of brits is way off the mark, so think about it before u make a comment. and the revolutionary war is completely irrelevant
@AK47NOVEMBER On every fucking Youtube video of something from American culture, there are British wanker cunts who come in and proclaim "the Bri-ish version is beh-uh."
And no, your Wimbledon theme song is not better. So suck it.
@EmceeNolan No-one in Britain gives a fuck about shit nobody cares about that happened 200 years ago, funnily enough we were too busy running the greatest empire the world has ever known. U jelly?
Sorry, wanker cunt, but I don't go on videos of British-based shit and talk about how the American version is beh-uh. When you have to consistently go around insisting your superiority, it reveals feelings of inferiority.
@ProtectTheDamned Did you win the War of 1812? You do have to realise that due to our (USA) founding fathers, we put a massive dent into British superiority and your empire began to crumble.
Now before you start getting defensive, let me point out that I am an Anglophile and LOVE many things British. However, the one thing I am not going to defend your "what happened in the White House in 1812" question, when moments before you were scoffing at the Revolutionary War comment.
@ProtectTheDamned What does the theme have to do with British people? The theme is about the event itself...the history and drama of Wimbledon. British people can be summed up as follows:
No use arguing with sick minds, fellow Yanks......they have trouble with open feelings over there and run from anything truly inspirational. Poor shallow chaps.....
That BBC theme sounds like another version to that "bloody awful" Dating Game show of the 70s
Does anyone know the name of the song HBO played during the Wimbledon champions, when HBO televised the tournament? I have been trying to get this song ever since HBO stopped their coverage of the tournament. Many thanks to anyone who has this info.
I'd have to agree 100% with @controvertialverdict (the irony of his/her name here is great!). Although I've been watching "all the action from SW19" on the Beeb since I was about 10, so I'm a bit biased.
I'm British, and I've just listened to this three times, trying to see whether I can get enthusiastic about it (like all the Americans seem to be). But I can't. At best it can be descibed as serviceable; merely a solemn fanfare. I don't know whether the graphics that NBC might present it with would spruce it up, but musically, my vote goes quite firmly with the BBC option.
i think its because when you listen to the BBC version you immediately correlate that with all that wimbledon means to you because you're so used to listening to it. its the same with americans and the NBC version. more than anything the songs are nostalgic. its impossible to decide which song is better it is truly an opinion based on where you're from and what you have listened to your whole life.
ok...here and now I am declaring. I will go to Wimbeldon, England and play on their courts with this music blasting in my ipod/phone/ipad. Bucket List has grown.
Just a note to all you Brits, the ending theme is much better anyway. I'm sure you'll all dismiss it simply because it's not BBC, but you should at least give it a listen...
Listen people there is only ONE Wimbledon theme and that is the BBC theme, this one is not even close to being as good, the bbc theme is iconic and easily better.
all you ugly british complaining about this tune are fucking morons because keith mansfield, the man who composed the nbc themes for use in america IS BRITISH YOU FUCKING TOOLS. god you're so blinded by your bias in hating everything american that we've actually traded places and you are the ignorant ones now.
Couldnt give a shit whether he is British. BBC theme is the correct one because its BRITISH. Look, we wouldnt attack Americans for chosing the 'wrong' theme tune for an AMeican tournament so whats your problem..?
bloody yanks.. think you own the universe dont ya
If you go to a YouTube link titled "Wimbledon 1984 - McEnroe vs Connors, Part 1", you will get a short, truncated version of the old school version of this theme.
Still waiting for the full-length version, but at least you can access a taste of it! It's in the first minute of the video, so you don't have to wait very long.
This NBC theme is far more refined and triumphant sounding than the BBC tune; with a regal character that resonates more in keeping with the royal patronage of the Wimbledon tournament.
The BBC theme sounds like cheap stock music from a 1960s TV commercial.
Still waiting for the old school one (early 1980s through early 1990s), but it's good to have this one officially in the YouTube library now. Thank you!
Sounds more like it's a Spanish Open Bullfighters Championships theme than Wimbledon.

It's OK I suppose...nothing particularly spectacular. It's trimphant and dramatic for the first few seconds, then it repeats quite a lot.
But if NBC inserts commercials into the coverage, I suppose this would suit "break bumpers" perfectly.
But for a 'proper' intro I'd go for the BBC theme every time.
But each to their own taste...
