I would've loved to see a race between Ruffian and Zenyatta, that would've been an awesome race, both are/were amazing. Ruffian was better then Secretariat (his trainer said so)
@queenluciaa No they didn't...they were going on about how horse racing is cruel. Half of my family races Standerdbreds (some of the best in the state) and one of my friends have an ex racehorse. I was just informing them of how that statement was judgemental and actually fairly wrong.

i hate horse racing is cruel my horse died on the track bout a month ago my mom fried the jockey he now that she was going down i hate that jockey then i was a jockey no horse went down on me but ruffian did deserved a second chance her owner's cant do that

She hit her shoulder on the gate at the beginning of the race, then when she broke her leg, her jockey tried to stop her and she refused to stop, she kept running till the jockey eventually got her stopped, so her leg was shread to peices. I did a paper on Ruffian, so i know alot about this race. Horse racing isn't any worse then any other equestrian sport! Horses break bones in Jumping, Barrel racing, hell even on trail rides so, ya dangerous

They got her to a hospital across from Belmont Park and they operated, she could've benn fine but when she woke up she started swinging her legs as if though she was trying to finish the race with Foolish Pleasure. The cast came off and rebroke her leg. They had to put her down. They all took turns saying bye and she died running. So sad. I miss her ): </3

@Rosslynne1, I think you're pretty spot on with that order. I'm a huge Zenyatta fan, but am also old enough that I got to see both Secretariat and Ruffian race in my lifetime. I don't believe Zenyatta will ever be beaten in what's left of her career. But, had they came through the same era of racing, Ruffian is the one filly who Zenyatta's late closing charge may not have been able to run down. As for Rachel and Ruffian, no contest. Ruffian would' destroyed Rachel on the front end of a race. IMO
watching the movie i believe she fractured her leg coming out of that gate. because during the whole race that leg kept popping and swatting outward a little. the pigeon might of made her shift a bit which then broke her leg completely. it breaks my heart everytime i see it

Among Winning Colors, Regret, Rags to Riches, Eight Belles, Indian Blessing, Zenyatty, Tanya, and all the other great fillies, Ruffian is FAR greater than any of them. There will never be another like her.
Ruffian was one of the greatest, but saying she easily greater than all of the other fillies is just not right. I know Regret and Rags to Riches would have given her a hell of time in a race. Regret was a fantastic filly and being exactly like Ruffian, she was never defeated by another filly. As for RTR, she just doesn't go away, there was never a race she hadn't given her all in. I'm not demoting Ruffian, because Ruffian probably is the greatest filly to ever hit the track, but saying she is
its actually gentics and human greed that usually causea horse to break down. especaliy now cause American Breeders are poorly matching mares with stallions. this some times cause TB's Legs to be weaker. but if you think of it in ruffian's era the legs were much more developed then today's tbs. theirs are weaker cause they dont race as much ( i think )
ruffian broke down because whan she broke from the gate she hit her left shoulder hard and immidiatly put all her weight on her right leg and it broke then she ran on it AFTER IT BROKE and it compleatly snapped and yea... you know the rest
There is NO possible way in the world to know at exactly what point Ruffian fractured her leg... I have been involved in Horses my entire life being a 3rd generation trainer and I know for a fact that horse can take a step or hang their leg in such a way that you just knew that they broke it only to discover that they haven't... The same being said for them taking a step or doing something that you'd never dream of them being harmed by it only to find that they have fatally injured themselves...

Countrylass, yes I have seen the film, a couple times recently.......it is very hard to take, the graphic-ness of her breakdown. I will always recall Sofie aka Ruffian as a true Champion, a pioneer, and an eternal bright shining star in horseracing's hall of fame.
It is so sad when any horse dies under these circumstances. I was not privileged to see her race but she clearly is one of the true greats. R.I.P Ruffian
Yeh, Ruffian could definitely fly, but i dont like that song very much, it is not as good as Ruffian. She deserves a much better song like Hilary Duff's song "I Am" or "Fly".
