Typical dirty, filthy Hawthorn thugs did it their way once again on this day. The dirty bastards would've never won so many flags if trial by video existed then.
Does anyone have footage of the last five minutes of this game? I was one of the boundary umpires and my claim to fame is running backwards alongside Mick Conlan whilst he was doing one of his famous runs along the wing. I'd really love to have the footage.
To me Fitzroy were the most exciting team to watch in the 1980's under Walls and in the season of 1986 under Parkin-for memory they were 10th after round 11 with only 3 or 4 wins and only made it to the finals after the last round.Shame they didn't win the flag in 1983-they should've won it that year.
I remember the early part of the game when Fitzroy were well ahead and hearing "Fitzroy have the loose man". At 2:10, Hawthorn should have got a free for a throw, and the commentators never saw it as I did.
This was a great flashback - this match was Fitzroy's last final. They got this far by beating Essendon by a point then beating the Swans by a kick; and as we saw in this clip they started promisingly in the prelim final but were unable to last the distance against Hawthorn.
The club's future was in doubt, but for this finals campaign they put that behind them to make a real fight.

I'd seen the Grand Finals from 1983 onwards, but this was the first time I saw all the Finals action. Great memories!
