imagine if such intelligent songs made main stream radio. Maybe play station 3 wouldnt be so popular ........Good luck to ya steve, Terrific song, ............see ya on the boat
@billybill56 Is he talking about an irishman or a scotch-irishman? Catholic irish didn't settle in appalachia or dixie, that was the scotch-irish protestants (ppl from scotland and north england that settled in northern ireland in the 1600s, then many of em emigrated from there to pennsylvania and filtered down through appalachia and started bluegrass)
billybill is right - if you listen to the lyrics, it is clear Earle is talking about a recent immigrant and Fenian (Catholic Irish rebel) who left Ireland and joined the 20th Maine. The unit was crucial in the Union victory at Gettysburg. The song is based on the book Killer Angels by Shaara.
Love this song! Very timeless, I don't care what he says about being politically incorrect...it's just good songwriting, Steve, and even if we don't have the same opinions, you can't deny the fabulousness. Kudos for having an opinion, saying it, and not putting anyone down.
eak, you are so right!! i've been a Steve Earle fan for over 20 years, he and i grew up about 30 miles apart in Texan...he's incredible, the best songwriter alive, i think....and i admire him, too, for speaking up for what he believes even if i don't agree with all of it....wonderful singer and i bet he's a wonderful man, too..
Great song. Amazes me how effortlessly he transitions across styles, and manages to bring fans along with him as he does it

@cloudbuster77 It was the Catholic Irish immigrants that fought for the north in the Civil War.
