Wasn't she just beautiful? She was an absolute perfectionist with her music/performances, and from what I read before took very little rehearsal because.............she was just that "Great". I would have paid anything to be in the front row to any of her performances.....or back row for that matter!!!
Thankyou so much for sharing this wonderful show. I remember it from when I was a little girl and it was sweet to see and hear it again. I still weep when I hear "Rainbow" but not in a bad way. Judy knew how to touch the heartstrings and I can only imagine that she does that with the angels in Heaven. RIP Dorothy--you were loved more than you could ever begin to imagine.
this was delightful to watch (especially as its Christmas eve where I am right now!.. well.. its technically Christmas day) thanks so much for the upload, Merry Christmas! <3
The biggest treat of her TV series. She rarely sang it on TV and kept it for her Concerts. My guess is because she wanted it to be very special when she agreed to sing it for TV audiences. Also I bet Judy felt that when she sang it live to her audiences in conerts that it packed more of a personal punch to their emotions. This was truly HER song!
Thank you so much for posting this timeless television treasure from Christmas 1963. One thought: This show aired not long after the JFK assassination. The nation was still in mourning; you can tell that there's a bit of a pall in the air from the way all the performers do their numbers. Variety shows like this no longer exist today. All of today's entertainers would want like a $100,000 appearance fee just to show up. It was a totally different world then.
@TheTweeter53 If I hadn't known that this show was recorded only two weeks after JFK's assassination, I wouldn't have noticed anything. I think that the performers did a remarkable job pulling themselves together and to act so professionally. But I suppose that this show (among others) helped to ease the pain the American nation must still have felt at the time when the show was aired, namely December 22, 1963 -- exactly one month after the assassination. Sad times -- but also very classy times!
@Great2C I totally agree with you that the performers did a wonderful job. Judy Garland was a personal friend of JFK's and must have felt the loss more so than the general public did. You have to give her credit for her professionalism. Also, did you know that Judy Garland and Mel Torme had a major falling out shortly after this show was taped? Appearances can be deceiving; on this particular show they seem to be all buddy-buddy. You certainly can't go by appearances!
"Now stay tuned for a special Christmas edition of 'CANDID CAMERA', followed by a VERY special mystery guest on 'WHAT'S MY LINE?'...over most of these stations".
Thank You for generously posting this . . . this was better than I initially remembered it and for that I'm grateful -- grateful too that these recordings exist . . . wonderful, historic stuff.
Hi Carmine, I had to look this up too, and was glad I found it...I sent it out to several people so they could see the actual video of Over The Rainbow...I think the emotion is genuine here...the first time I heard this, it was just the audio, and a lot of the noises you hear didn't make sense to me, but when I saw the video...it made much more sense! Thanks for posting this video Univfoxx! :)
I had to say too...I noticed this many years ago when I first heard this in the early 80's when I was a teenager...at 4:48 I think you can hear someone sobbing...when Judy says "fly"...I think someone in the audience was becoming emotional...this performance has given me goosebumps for almost 30 years...I love it! :)
@Prod62366 actually, the sound is at 4:46 and it sounds more like someone is laughing because Judy had to duck her head down for the boy to put his arm around her, which in turn messed Judy up with the note she was singing.
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww so sweet to see how much judy adores and loves her children :)
god bless judy
