Fabulous song, fabulous album from a band that for numerous reasons, intellectually, musically, emotionally is the greatest band I've ever heard and seen. And by far.
Remember reading Warner were pissed cause they let the band pick the first single from new adventures and they thought this was awful, hearing this made me go to town to buy the record, beautiful song.

"Because the Night is made for lovers" patti smith(song co-wrote with "da boss") . not to be confused with the other patty smith or howyouspellit, famous for "bang bang/ i am the Warrior..."
When I first listened to this song I thought that the video had to be "with someone wandering alone during the night, in a city with lots of darkness and light". And so it is. I'm amazed.
I think this song is a masterpiece it reminds me a lot of things that I've done in the 90's. I thought then this song would be awesome and I love it so much! Thank you for posted!

i worked as a runner on this video while doing my internship in New York. One of my jobs was to buy all those little fairy lights, it was the middle of august and i spent days running all over the city trying to find christmas lights.
@ianese2005 Just curious but did you have to get the inflatable deers for the electrolite video as well. Assume it was shot around same time and studio.
@MrBushytop No, just the lights. The production company 'Open City Films" was based in New York where i worked. The studio shoot was in LA, while Pati was in Prague, where they director went and filmed her with his 8mm.
@bat115 i don't remember dollar stores, I was just given a list of places to try, eventually i got most the lights from a store that just sold christmas decorations, the assistant was really rude, and i doubt they had had any customers for months.
This brilliant song is on my top 5 favourite REM songs: 1. Cuyahoga, 2. E-Bow the Letter, 3. Strange Currencies, 4. The Great Beyond, 5. Imitation of Life.
Strange how great songs often have their inspiration in the drugs death or just flame-out of someone - here River Phoenix, Neil Young's "Change Your Mind" (Cobain), Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" (Syd Barrett), many others.

Because of the nature of the
job, I was unfortunately unable to entirely avoid lip-sync, but I made
sure that all of the instruments were plugged in and I encouraged the
band to play, read, and hang out as if they were in a normal practice
room. Patti Smith's presence is critical in the video, as it has been
in R.E.M.'s approach to music. We got on a tram with her in Prague and
shot without permission.

E-BOW, THE LETTER
R.E.M. Director's Cut, 1996, 5:22, 16mm/Video
The song, written in the form of a letter, invokes travel and memory,
apprehension and hope. The video was shot in L.A., New York, and
Prague, but I wanted to blur the distinctions between the cities
because regional distinctions are rapidly disappearing as corporate
presence becomes increasingly dominant
