You never know, I guess that's the worst thing about filtering, you don't get to choose what's good and what's bad, and the person making the decision may not understand it.
well remember every next generation kid are more and more tech gurus so if they are determined they can go and know how to deactivate most of that software or the open DNS if they are really want to freely browse the internet you would need to put very hardly encrypted passwords and other crap to really combat the curiosity of every new generation
yeah but i dont think its because kids are getting better every generation, its just that the internet has made certain information available for the average person to find. if u look at kids from the 70s/80s they had to do it all themselves. so i dont think kids are getting better if fact, they are learning to code less i think.
Yes I am all for protecting kids too. But where do we draw the line? What's considered "harmful" on the net can be subjective, and for less tech parents, what if they get some off the shelf software, not all of them are good, i.e. some actually breaks legitimate things. But again "legitimate" can be subjective. I guess that's view I am coming from, I grow up without internet filtering and I feel that a kid may be disadvantaged to others with filtering.
Exactly, and the fact that you can't really block everything, I can set up a LAN such that it only have proxied web access, but then that is only a small part of the internet and I think kids will be disadvantaged from learning other protocols etc.
Take a look at "OpenDNS" awesome free internet content filtering solution.

not sure, but I know their is software available that filters the internet. I think it should be up to the parent to make the decision.
