What I want to know is why theres no shotgun next to the shotgun shells at the beginning. I played this level on the PC and was really dissapointed when there was no shotgun at the crashed pelican. The weird thing is I see that theres a shotgun there in the xbox version, and its really confusing

Oh, I remember this level. The swamp part was so incredibly atmospheric. You didn't know what was going on, where everybody was and what were those creepy things constantly appearing on the radar, not to mention the oppressive music and the mysterious radio transmissions playing in the background.

Holy crap i remember playing this level only the third  day after christmas for the first time, many a year ago. Shotgun and pistol were my favs but i had no idea what was about the jump out of the darkness when i played through this. Now this was truly a scary part of the game, one that i'll always remember ;) and me and my brothers recation when they burst through that door

I remember this level, first everything is quiet, then when the Flood appears you start running away from the shooting and shooting triying to make them go away bit then you realize the amount of Flood that is charging at you and get desperate and fearful, the whole place looked the same, and you didnt now where to go, always running out of ammo, it was hard as fuck and scary

I kind of envy people who were able to fear this level. At the time I owned the game, I was only about 8, and, consequentially, I didn't know or care about what the hell was going on. To me they were just squid-like monsters and weird greenish enemies that needed to be shot down. I didn't really appreciate the fear they could invoke until around Halo 2, and by Halo 3, I really didn't want anything to do with them.

Actually, that is a flood. You can actually shoot it and it will fall over. When it falls over keep running towards it and then you'll see it's a elite combat form. Takes a few tries though.

One of the things that really scares me during the level is not just the "Where is everybody?" atmosphere, but that combined with the ambient sounds...Especially the flood gurgle/wind sound that is in the background at 3:54 and the unknown machinery humming in the light bridge rooms.

Unlike certain games design to scare you, this isn't over the top with gibbing or anything. It feels like a happy daytime scenario at first, but after this level, it turns to something much darker.

I agree with you, Jester. The Flood in Halo: CE were always terrifying. I mean, 343 Guilty Spark was building suspense the whole damn level, and then, you had to fight these horrible monsters that had sent a man insane.

Floodgate, on the other hand... the name was a dead give-away, and the flood are never scary because the levels aren't designed that way. They're just annoying. On 'The Covenant', they're kinda cool though. It's like leading an army of horrible mushroomy Pikmin around.

The way the creators introduced the flood is nothing short of brilliant. It was something stright out of a horror movie. Build up the tension with music, lack of strong enemies, a crazed marine, and blips on the tracker that disapear a second later then bring them in with a bang. Probably my favorite level in the entire halo trilagy.
