  • how well does the vg-1 steel resist rust? and hold a edge? i hear its easy to sharpen.

  • How did the elk hunt go for you? Did this knife meet your expectations? I planned a hunt for red stag in SEPT 2011.These amazing animals weigh in at 445 lbs approx live weight.

  • knife is ok ,, but ,,, i do not like kryton handles ,,,,, they are ok when new ,but ,they get soiled and change their texture in time ,,, and if you use them around lots of grime they feel slimy ,,,,and you can not wash out that slimy feeling .

  • Just got my Pendleton Hunter a couple days ago, it came with VG1. The belt loop sucks, its too big. So I ordered a belt clip from Blade-Tech, hopefully it fits. I'm also considering a Counter Tac II or Kiridashi.

  • I have the mini hunter and you wouldnt think so but it feels good in hand... I want them all... LOL... I got the mini for EDC... I have a video on the mini. great videos man.

  • NO NO japanese suck! have you seen the stuff that has been on television latley! their killin machines!

  • @paintballhead03 Japan has good steel... China is bad... As for the TVs Im sure some are made in China... I am all for USA made but I dont mind when my blade are from Japan... PS I drive American cars...lol

  • Nice knife! Mine already on the way... looks like the nylon belt piece of the sheath can be screwed of and replaced with MOLLE straps or a Tec Lock? like the bellied handle in the middle. I think this is going to be my new favorite in combination with the Ka-Bar Kukri machete for splitting... sweeet!

  • is this knife good for some light batoning?

  • @sevendays00 I would say very light batoning at the most. Not its intended design I don't think. Really meant to cut through meat with that hollow grind. If you start pounding hard wood it could jack your blade quick. I'd recommend a number of different knives for batonning...

  • @MrChinelas22 .. thanks!

  • @sevendays00 Hi, I am going to butt in here as I have an aversion to any hollow ground blade being used for heavy duty tasks like batoning as there is just not enough steel behind the cutting edge to handle all those lateral forces when it is being hit. No one can hit straight and square each time so each time it is not a perfect strike you are loading the side of the blade. This is where convex grinds come into their own. MrChinelas22 sorry for butting in,I enjoyed the clip Thanks.

  • @labrat7357 all good labrat. I actually agree with you completely. I have several bark rivers for my heavy tasks. This cold steel is really built to cut up meat. It is crazy sharp but I would be better off using a convex edged knife on something hard like wood...or rocks.

  • Not bad. Usefull information. I give it a tumb up.

  • how do you like the steel? does it scratch much?

  • hey i have a question for you though , does this blade have a convex grind on it i mean i see a slight line at the very end of the blade does it have a secondary grind on the ende of the blade?

  • for the price that cold steel charges i would say if you want a stronger stainless laminated blade and a better quality knife try fallkniven knives they hold an edge much better then cold steel

  • @samstterhamstteer Yep. I agree. I actually already replaced this one with a Bark River Highland. Fallkniven is an excellent choice though...

  • @samstterhamstteer Although, if you shop right, this one is almost half the price of the Fallkniven equivalent...

  • @Yebache yes thats true for the price this knife is very usefull i might just get one but im the type that if something is lets say 3o or 40 dollars more and it performs better i dont mind spending the money, i just bought another f1 and they are 100 dollars now with shipping thats not bad at all in my opinion

  • how is the aus-8 ss working for you? I heard it sucks but I dont know....

  • @Tevujin Aus8 aint so bad. This one is VG1 though.

  • hey good review u got me to get this knife.. its coming in the mail

  • Really good job. Thanks for the review.

  • Haha I laughed when you made the comment about stabbing through 20 layers of motorcycle leather.

  • Yeah, those cold steel demo videos are pretty rediculous...

  • Thx for a nice informative review!

  • Agreed on the comparison. I ended up just going with the cheaper knife that I felt would still get the job done. I don't field dress big game everyday but I still wanted something up to the task. Looking back on it, I would have liked to get the Fallkniven F1 but it came down to money. I did this review to show a cheaper alternative. I will review again post hunt.

  • The handle is filled with epoxy and the tang is pressed into the epoxy "It is not going anywhere are the words that our senior design engineer used. (and, it was obvious from the cut out of it and his explaining to me each step/process)

I was really impressed with their customer service and I still may get the Cabelas Gerber Gator. Very light almost too light..but the engineer said it wasn't going anywhere and engineers go to college for 1 or 2 yrs longer than I did...

  • It has a 2/3rds tang into the handle. The tang is forkedThen, at each end of the forked tang there are small notches that click and lock it into place inside the glass filled nylon handle (the glass filled nylon handle is a material that is used to make something more rigid)

  • On the other hand when I contacted Gerber, the cust serv rep didn't know if the gator was full tang or not. So, she said she would find out and let me know. She actually contacted the Senior Design Engineer who explained that it was like this,

  • Thanks mate. Although the dog/reflector idea was good, I ended up going with mother nature this time to provide the light.

  • LoL.. Didn't he stay Put? I've ripped open the Recon Scout, the SRK is the same.. I've seen many of them opened up.. The lanyard is generally drilled about 1/4" from the end of the tang.. and they are all about 1/2" high :) plenty tough.. and a sharp knife takes that kraton off in a few seconds. :) its not glued on.. the lanyard pin holds it all in place.

  • from what I've seen on all the Kraton CS knives.. the tang is a Full Length hidden Tang which terminates at the lanyard hole..

  • I don't know. I guess I could cut it open to see. I would need another Cold Steel knife to cut through it though. That's how tough they are. No really, I don't know. I just contacted the company and simply asked if it was full tang and I got a simple one word emailed response, "yes". It does feel very solid even past the lanyard hole for what its worth...

  • Really nice lighting. Good video quality.

That blade shape and design looks almost identical to the dozier video I did.. So I assume it may work just as well.. That knife is a mean cutting machine for skin deep cuts.
