No, Mario was right when he said Super NES because Super Mario World was (at the time) the last Mario major 2D sidescroller. If you really wanna get technical, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins was the last 2D sidescroller but it's a pretty minor game compared to SMW.
