  • 2:08 guy thinking "yea totally not gay at all"

  • hiposinate no dosent work for me

  • What the f* was this, this experiment proved nothing, if he had just taken out the hammer straight away and hit the rubber hand in front of me I would have been scared,...

  • Boring and stupid.

  • Those Jews are just so clever!

  • 3:04

  • Next UP: The Rubber Dildo Illusion!!!!!

  • @icefphil Oh God.

  • Still calling bullshit. The phenomenon may or may not exist but this experiment doesn't prove it. People feel pain when they watch someone else get a shot or stub their toe. Any 'rush' these people are getting cannot be isolated from surprise or sensory adaption, thus it's a flawed experiment

  • Actually it is not bs I took a class with Rosenblum and was a subject for this experiment. It worked. Maybe you should take the class or actually understand what multi sensory perception is.

  • This is bullshit... if someone randomly drops a hammer anywhere near you out of no where you're going to flinch... this is not science...

  • @StevenGaspard You don't just flinch in this illusion, you get a huge shot of adrenaline and some people even feel a quick shot of pain in their hand... Your brain actually is tricked into thinking your hand was just crushed with a hammer...

  • The best part of this illusion is that it works with amputees. If the stump of someone missing a hand is brushed next to a rubber hand they feel as if a hand is being touched!

  • Should have done it with a rubber dick instead. Would have been even funnier when he pulled out the hammer.

  • Would have been good to have had a shot of the persons real hand so we can see how it flinches in response to the hammer hitting the rubber hand.

  • professor!

    this is cool

  • i think she was startled cuz a DUDE WAS IN FRONT OF HER SWINGING A HAMMER

  • What director came up with that effect at 1:45? It looks like God took a massive shit across the sky.

  • thas my psych teacher!

  • 1:26

  • He said try it at home with your kids like these people gon set this jawn up with a rubber hand an shit

  • Why everybody have disgusting hands?

  • It would have been nice to see over his shoulder to know what the real hand was doing in response to the sight of the hammer coming toward the rubber one. Did it flinch? Did it stay still? That seems like an obvious shot to have given us!

  • the rubber hand feels so real it confuses the psychologist... in that case, OUCH...

  • 2:27 SARAH PALIN???

  • at 1:26 that girl is in the same position when i show her my junk......

  • @squishsqo ya cuz its so small

  • "try that at home with your kids!" HAHAHA

  • You think that's air youre breathing?

  • actors/10

  • ...i want to try this!! XD

  • would have been lolz it he had actually hit there real hand

  • Of course the brain can change due to experience. I called fucking learning.

  • I would like to try that one time...

  • 1:26 , girl on the right... also extremly hot

  • Comment removed

  • If you close your eyes while being stroked, then opened them after being stroked and just before the hammer. This wouldn't work would it., or maybe it will just from the sudden shock of seeing the hammer on a realistic hand and associating experience with sight. Or perhaps it wouldn't work at all and prove that vision correlates with sense(then there's the question of blind people)

The ability of the human brain to adapt is fuckin fast o.0

  • "was that scary?"

    "yes"

    "good i like dick"

  • lol pulls out the hammer :DD

  • That's so cool!

  • Who came here because they have a Psychology exam tomorrow!!

  • @UGURAKILLI

    forever alone...

  • Who's to say they aren't reacting to a hammer smashing something a foot from their face? Put a tea cup down and stroke that, then smash it. I'll still jump.

  • Congratulations, you just explained why so many people fap to porn.

  • Cool

  • I don't think this would work as well with black people....

  • thumbs up if you fast forwarded the video to 1:26 to look at the hot girl on the left.

  • @vickydilip hahahahaha. i so did.

  • neuroplasticity isn't very new for someone who's been closely following the field...

  • @I3L4NK Wow, tautology at its finest right there.

  • @sixequalszero I'm not quite sure you know what tautology means, because I don't think you know what tautology means.

  • It would be better if they strap the real hand down so the volunteers feel more as if the rubber hand is their own, as they cannot lift it away.

  • Hooray! I go to the school this guy teaches at!

  • So this is pretty cool and they explain that the subject thinks the hand is their own but they don't explain why they smash the fake hand with the hammer.

  • @Tatrer I think its because even though you don't hit their actual hand with the hammer for an instant they feel the pain that they would have felt had their real hand been hit, hence the whole neuro adoption thing or whatever he was talking about, your brain believes even for a moment that the plastic hand is yours and so makes you feel pain in accordance with what you dee, not what you feel

  • gay

  • "Was that scary? Good, we like that..."

Psychologists. They're always trying to scare you by hitting your adopted wax hands with hammers.

  • @CheerioCheetah it's rubber

  • @CheerioCheetah Those bastards...

  • I would be stealing their rings.

  • i would have that reactition of there wasnt a rubber hand anywhere... some guy pulls a hammer and does that in front of you? I got nothing from this vid at all

  • Neural plasticity is definitely not a new idea!

  • It would be funny if hit the real hand with hammer and they didn't feel it.

  • this is not new .... its an old idea in my 8th grade science book 9 years ago

  • @simontay1984 And yet it's two older women and a bloke actually taking part. Everyone thinks they would act differently once they've seen it.

  • @simontay1984 this is a well known experiment in neuroscience, and the underlying theory has been used successfully to treat phantom pains in amputees.

so while you might know, your body will be more than willing to believe this.

  • @simontay1984 i was sleeping last night and a blanket had the same kind of position as my hand and i thought it was, when i tried to move my hand which i thought was the blanket, of course it wouldn't move. it works as long as you don't see your real hand because then you guess that the fake one has to be it

  • Comment removed

  • @simontay1984 If u took the time to read the full experiments conducted in a controlled lab environment you would find those who don't have their hand stroked in complete synchrony with stroking of the rubber hand 1. Don't experience the illusion of ownership of the rubber hand. 2. Don't demonstrate the same 'shock' when the rubber hand is harmed, as those whose hand was stroked in complete synchrony with the rubber hand. This effect has been replicated over and over despite appearing absurd

  • I've ALWAYS wanted to try that!

  • im more interested in the shoddy camera work, at 1:39 they have added a top heavy shading lense. these are usually added for dramatic effect or complimenting the screen action, etr. he is a tiny little man in the corner and they just made the sky look like brown instead of grey. wtf.

  • @kibaXxXhinata hmm i didnt notice that the sky was brown there... maybe that was part of the experiment... WE'RE ALL LIVING AN EXPERIMENT..

  • If anyone has ever hit their real hand with a hammer you would know that right after you would be shaking that hand around. Which not one person does in this video.

  • If you have the individual focus all their attention on what is going on with the hand and the fake hand then suprise them with smashing one of the objects they're focusing on out of the blue ofcaurse they are going to jump. Then you as the psycologist just evaluate why they jump as their brain adopted the fake hand. Then other person is just going to agree with you because they don't know why they jumped it doesn't make this statement true.

  • @RedTailedTuna Sorry, your argument is flawed because I've done this before. For an instant after your hand gets hit, it actually hurts. Good try though. All of that nonsense you spouted might have fooled someone.

  • @eldiablosrojo The real nonsense here is that you have been fooled into thinking the fake hand was yours and that you felt pain when you didn't through a simple hypnotic trick.

  • he does actually stops brushing the real hand at some point. but the eye's are transmiting the brain that the stroke is still in progress, so the persone actually felt the stroking even though it doesnt actually happen to them

  • I wonder what would happen if he stopped brushing their real hand and kept brushing the rubber one.. would they still "feel" it?

  • The brain is responding to what the eyes is seeing...

  • if i told you to focus on a piece of tissue paper and then suddenly hammered it, do you think you wouldn`t be surprised?

this experiment has lots of problems lol stick to the original one , horizon

  • how does it reveal anything?

What result would not lead to this conclusion?

  • ok what doesn't this guy "like"... lol.

  • I participated in a similar test where they position a mirror in a way that you see your real right hand and the mirror copy of your right hand on the left side.

Then they stroke both hands at the same time which is fine because the sensory image fits the visual one. But then they stroke only the right hand but since you see your imaginary left hand being stroked too you could swear that you feel something on that side too... Very creepy :)

  • 1:59 that guy shaved his arm hair ??

  • thumbs up for the HOTTEST GIRL EVER !!!

  • 1:25 Marry me????

  • I like this but I would have liked to see what happens if you were to ask the subjects to close their eyes before you hit the rubber hand with the hammer. Just curious.

  • @rodolfo1114 good point

  • @rodolfo1114 I think you missed the whole point of the experiment.... if you close your eyes, your brain couldn't see the fake arm. Nothing would happen.

  • @MapleFoliage I think that's the point he was making. I don't think he missed the point, he wanted it demonstrated further. He wants to see someone close their eyes an do the exact same experiment so he can see their lack of reaction compared to when they have their eyes open.

  • 1:26, girl on the left.....extremly hot

  • @jerzees good call

  • @jerzees Its funny how thats the only thing you notice :L Your a true guy my friend :')

  • @jerzees OMG I actually rewinded to watch!... and glad I did! lol

Girl in the middle is going to be a heartbreaker too when she's older haha!

    ..perhaps they're hired extra's ;-)

  • @jerzees i extremely agree.

  • @jerzees its tje tits.. and the face.. and everything

  • @jerzees not really

  • @jerzees thats the face she'd make when she unzipped my pants because of how excited she would be

  • @jerzees Why don't you just have a seat right there...

  • @jerzees middle pretty hot too

  • @healster87

    he's a straight male human....

  • @healster87

That isnt a kid, learn your right from left.

  • @yonskii depending on which millisecond the vid jumps to within 1:26 you either see the teenage girls or a little girl to the right of the test subject. since there are several frames per second. so no one is wrong

  • @i000110001100

You cannot be serious. You can barely even notice that girl in the background, she looks like a blue blur, and its only for a FRACTION of the second. The majority of 1:26 is the teenage girls.

  • @yonskii but depending on which frame the link takes you to you either see one frame or the other. when i clicked the link i saw the little girl on the right and since it was paused the duration of the shot doesn't matter.

  • @i000110001100

    Who gives a flying fuck?

  • @yonskii obviously you do or you wouldn't keep responding! you're absolutely terrible at arguing aren't you? more specifically though, you're a total cunt hole! LOL!!!

  • @i000110001100

    And you're a troll. Goodbye.

  • @jerzees I concur with your observation wholeheartedly.

  • @jerzees jailbait

  • @jerzees i tend to agree with this statement

  • @jerzees Oh the ":o" one :)

  • this is like that episode in House, MD!

  • i do the same thing when i play wii

  • They are completly lying to you other guys viewing this video... they know what causes this, and they know other implications of it aswell. Its called "mirror neurons", and there no "rewiring" going on at all.

  • Cool video when u guys get a chance chk out PINK AND PURPLE da remix i did...

  • asdssd

  • whos the fucking fox at 1:25?

  • @yertman3000 yeah i noticed her to :) shes standing with her mouth in the "ready position" ;) . . . or perhaps you were talking about the girl with the flowery shirt? I know youtube is full of those guys aswell...

  • I suppose that this is related to when warriors say "my weapon is an extension of my body."

  • @NonsenseAbounds this has absolutely nothing to do with that man. this is a sensory perception illusion created by your brain, and the other is a personification of a weapon. . .

  • @SaulMeyersz well you still have the rubber one left

  • @NonsenseAbounds those tools remove my comment..

    weak

  • @SaulMeyersz awwww :( although, youtube comment board is not the place for discourse

  • Girl on left @1:25 = HOT!!

  • Would be funny if he actually hit the subjects real hands. O.K, not so funny, just painful.

  • its a bit like avatar :S

  • @QueenBonesofdarkness oh my god you actually just said that?

  • It would be interesting to know, whether the volunteers try to pull away their hand at the last moment.

  • @ikweetmeer They probably can't see the hammer until its to late.

  • his my professor at UC RIVERSIDE:)

  • he's

  • could you post the full Program ? I dodn't have access to the I player

  • @LegoDudez Cheers fella.

  • the woman's voiceover wasnt loud enough...

  • something wrong with the volume level of the voiceover and music.

  • to tollan23; correct, needs some adjustment.

  • @tollan23 BBC uploads are like this a lot.

  • Seen this in the science museum.

  • @LegoDudez Whereabouts is it? Wanna check it out lol. Im 22 for fucks sake but I feel like a kid and really wanna go try it!
