What the f* was this, this experiment proved nothing, if he had just taken out the hammer straight away and hit the rubber hand in front of me I would have been scared,...
Still calling bullshit. The phenomenon may or may not exist but this experiment doesn't prove it. People feel pain when they watch someone else get a shot or stub their toe. Any 'rush' these people are getting cannot be isolated from surprise or sensory adaption, thus it's a flawed experiment
Actually it is not bs I took a class with Rosenblum and was a subject for this experiment. It worked. Maybe you should take the class or actually understand what multi sensory perception is.
@StevenGaspard You don't just flinch in this illusion, you get a huge shot of adrenaline and some people even feel a quick shot of pain in their hand... Your brain actually is tricked into thinking your hand was just crushed with a hammer...
The best part of this illusion is that it works with amputees. If the stump of someone missing a hand is brushed next to a rubber hand they feel as if a hand is being touched!
It would have been nice to see over his shoulder to know what the real hand was doing in response to the sight of the hammer coming toward the rubber one. Did it flinch? Did it stay still? That seems like an obvious shot to have given us!
If you close your eyes while being stroked, then opened them after being stroked and just before the hammer. This wouldn't work would it., or maybe it will just from the sudden shock of seeing the hammer on a realistic hand and associating experience with sight. Or perhaps it wouldn't work at all and prove that vision correlates with sense(then there's the question of blind people)
The ability of the human brain to adapt is fuckin fast o.0
Who's to say they aren't reacting to a hammer smashing something a foot from their face? Put a tea cup down and stroke that, then smash it. I'll still jump.
So this is pretty cool and they explain that the subject thinks the hand is their own but they don't explain why they smash the fake hand with the hammer.
@Tatrer I think its because even though you don't hit their actual hand with the hammer for an instant they feel the pain that they would have felt had their real hand been hit, hence the whole neuro adoption thing or whatever he was talking about, your brain believes even for a moment that the plastic hand is yours and so makes you feel pain in accordance with what you dee, not what you feel
i would have that reactition of there wasnt a rubber hand anywhere... some guy pulls a hammer and does that in front of you? I got nothing from this vid at all
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this experiment is a load of rubbish. i think i'd know which is my real hand.
i don't have a rubber hand lying about (obviously) so can't test but i don't think this would work on me. notice how in the video its mostly little girls volunteering.
@simontay1984 this is a well known experiment in neuroscience, and the underlying theory has been used successfully to treat phantom pains in amputees.
so while you might know, your body will be more than willing to believe this.
@simontay1984 i was sleeping last night and a blanket had the same kind of position as my hand and i thought it was, when i tried to move my hand which i thought was the blanket, of course it wouldn't move. it works as long as you don't see your real hand because then you guess that the fake one has to be it
@simontay1984 If u took the time to read the full experiments conducted in a controlled lab environment you would find those who don't have their hand stroked in complete synchrony with stroking of the rubber hand 1. Don't experience the illusion of ownership of the rubber hand. 2. Don't demonstrate the same 'shock' when the rubber hand is harmed, as those whose hand was stroked in complete synchrony with the rubber hand. This effect has been replicated over and over despite appearing absurd
im more interested in the shoddy camera work, at 1:39 they have added a top heavy shading lense. these are usually added for dramatic effect or complimenting the screen action, etr. he is a tiny little man in the corner and they just made the sky look like brown instead of grey. wtf.
If anyone has ever hit their real hand with a hammer you would know that right after you would be shaking that hand around. Which not one person does in this video.
If you have the individual focus all their attention on what is going on with the hand and the fake hand then suprise them with smashing one of the objects they're focusing on out of the blue ofcaurse they are going to jump. Then you as the psycologist just evaluate why they jump as their brain adopted the fake hand. Then other person is just going to agree with you because they don't know why they jumped it doesn't make this statement true.
@RedTailedTuna Sorry, your argument is flawed because I've done this before. For an instant after your hand gets hit, it actually hurts. Good try though. All of that nonsense you spouted might have fooled someone.
@eldiablosrojo The real nonsense here is that you have been fooled into thinking the fake hand was yours and that you felt pain when you didn't through a simple hypnotic trick.
he does actually stops brushing the real hand at some point. but the eye's are transmiting the brain that the stroke is still in progress, so the persone actually felt the stroking even though it doesnt actually happen to them
I participated in a similar test where they position a mirror in a way that you see your real right hand and the mirror copy of your right hand on the left side.
Then they stroke both hands at the same time which is fine because the sensory image fits the visual one. But then they stroke only the right hand but since you see your imaginary left hand being stroked too you could swear that you feel something on that side too... Very creepy :)
I like this but I would have liked to see what happens if you were to ask the subjects to close their eyes before you hit the rubber hand with the hammer. Just curious.
@rodolfo1114 I think you missed the whole point of the experiment.... if you close your eyes, your brain couldn't see the fake arm. Nothing would happen.
@MapleFoliage I think that's the point he was making. I don't think he missed the point, he wanted it demonstrated further. He wants to see someone close their eyes an do the exact same experiment so he can see their lack of reaction compared to when they have their eyes open.
@yonskii depending on which millisecond the vid jumps to within 1:26 you either see the teenage girls or a little girl to the right of the test subject. since there are several frames per second. so no one is wrong
