I'm a Iraq war veteran US. We are not victims of war we are victims of blood. Between our Celtic/Germanic/Norse roots we come by the sad endeavor natural. The scary part is when you like the thrill. Other races make war just not on our European grand scale it's like a disease of the blood you can't cure it has always been with us and will be forever. I have no regrets about fighting
@Brus1066 check out a civilization 'Attara' in ukraine i think, from between 12000 to 22000 BC may be older. megalithic structure 5 time larger than stonehenge and plenty more. the strange thing is that they have found no weapons at any of the sites or any evidence of war in their society.maybe it has not always been with us nor is it our natural state of being... stillness and love
if you dont wanna die or cry, dont get in the army, if you get in the army is to make war (not metter the reason), if you makee war maibe u die, so you know what can happen, so dont cry know damn!
@t40ajr said, "There are so many deaths and so much grief all because of different religions."
Ah yes that old canard, spouted often regardless of the facts. Try looking into things a little deeper instead of resorting to such tired, old and worn out clichés. Thanks.
First of all, yes, this subject must be addressed and music is stil the way to get the message across, BUT, this is way too uncommercial but in contrast has the cheesiest of raps that completely turns me off the track. Otherwise the Massive Attack like groove could have been complimented by snatches of the original melodic riff, that is the bit that reminds people most about the original. Still time to do something about it if the election is holding up the release. Opportunity missed I'd say.
Yes, you're right about the music still being the way to get the message across. I dare say it is the most powerful one as it's the language people understand the most. I remember an interview in which Matt Johnson (The The) said that a fan of his wrote to him saying he'd never re-join the US army again after hearing the "Sweet Bird Of Truth" song.
@TheMercyBeat Equally if you watch the video for the Faithless track 'Bombs', which really says everything about perceptions of the Afghan 'war'. The music and video together of that track have the same profound effect on me now as '19' did in 1985.
Yes, that track is another as perfect example of music being the way to get the message across. I also think "19" probably has bigger impact on people now than the first time around. Firstly, most initial Paul Hardcastle's fans were in their teens/early 20s and had no children to look after when the song was released. (...)
(...)Whereas now when they're grown-ups and got to know how some certain things work they're less willing to send their children who are in around as the same age as they were back then to an endless and often questionable military duty abroad, especially to the countries like Afghanistan et al.
"19" is a timeless classic that will continue to spread people's horizons and make them change their opinions about the things going on around them. And that's most important.
I'll just repeat what I said on another video: Bloody brilliant rework! One of the best things to come out of this year (2010). As good as the 1985 original. Video left me totally lost for words. You did it again, Paul! And I'm taking my hat off to you for that.
I thought a song like this couldn't happen in today's world. But it did happen. I just deeply hope they heard you well this time. War is the greatest evil ever created.
Is the song going to be released in CD form too, btw? :-)
Awesome video..... i lost my father due to the vietnam war ..... he came back in a wheelchair and stayed in that wheelchair until he passed away at a VA hospital . i only saw him once.........the vietnam war should have never happened.
The message is still relevant today, but the "Tubular Bells"-esque riff is obviously missing (perhaps for preemptive legal reasons?). It doesn't sound as contemporary as, say, putting the stuttery narration over Wolfgang Gartner's "Fire Power". But since Mike Oldfield keeps revisiting TB, I keep hoping he and Paul Hardcastle will collaborate. (Slim chance in hell.)
i know who are you fighting with.you are fighting with your self.the zionist capitalists have control on all of your live and they play with life of you with name of "fighting with terrorist".medias ,food and clothing and poloticians.every thing is in their hands..i have many afghani friends.all of them say that talibans take money from NATO governments.you need a savior.a hero.open your eyes
"Personally I tried deep emotions in seeing these images in thought and memory of how many of our brothers died in that war as in all wars ... Great Paul Hardcastle to be able once again to awaken our consciences."
Over 50,000 of my dead countrymen in Vietnam. And those poor Vietnamese. Nothing their government ever did to them could equal the horror our politicians brought them. Brothers, fathers, sons and lovers. Life deprived. And, for what? Why do we let them do this to us?
Not too long ago i heard the fact, that british troops have an average age of 19.... At that moment my first thought was: Hm, sounds familiar to me, wasn't there a song called 19? I just found a word on a news page, that Paul redid this song. Back in the days i didn't really understand, what the song was trying to tell me ('cause in 1985, i was 12^^). Some might say "all done for commerce". Nope. This is the best way to open public eyes by doing a song, that is heard and spread! Gr8 Song&Vid
I don't agree with 'very weak' musically. The original was far more up my street for music (that 80's electro groove), but this is still great stuff. And a very potent message of course. 5/5
Paul you are so right . When we begin to really realize why the military industrial complex wants us to be in these hugely profitable wars maybe something will be done about these crimes against mankind. Wars are different NOW. Keep up the fight.
On a muscial front this is a far more subtle & menacing work than the original (no catchy melodies etc) which I think pays an intentionally respectful reverence those affected by these current troubled times. The video also so very eloquently communicates the fact that we are a part of history repeating & that we do not appear to be learning anything moving forwards despite the continued & undoubted heroism of those serving their countries.
Even more pertinent today than it was when originally released in 1985.
This piece of music was resonsible for both arousing my interest in electronic music & for raising my socio-political awareness.
I truly hope it has the same (if not greater) impact on this generation as I think we have all become desensitised to the horrors of war & the regimes that drive it. Respect indeed Mr H
Paul, as I watch and listen I am again inspired and feel overcome with reverence for our young men who have gave so much! Three such things have given me this overwhelming feeling before; the Vietnam wall when I saw it and every time I see it., your first "19" and now this! I am a young man of 48 years but know war and it's impact. I have a stepson serving in the USMC and I support him and all our troops. They are our sons! weeping.
I hope the giveaway event helped the video go viral. The time is now 2 get political, 2 raise peep's awareness about govts' needs 2 do war as economachines & of risky foreign policies.
I support our troops & hear those who served made a difference. But, I see a gaze of the 'Nam vets I saw as a kid in San Diego @ MiraMar USNbase: a lost look/spirit.
My mom volunteered, meeting wounded & I went w/her f/1969-1972 & learned compassion. Is it 'too inconvenient' 4 govt's?
The video is a stark reminder that nothing changes in war...still making the same mistakes. Nuff respect Paul for keeping the horror of war to the forefront.
Mr. Hardcastle... you have made an awesome impacting video - again... the updated footage and incorporation of newer elements melds right in (sad to say). I hope you have some friends at the SxSW and WMC shows that will play this - it might make a difference...
Ive shared this on my wall on fb, Hope it does some gd :-)

As a 21 year old, in 1967, stationed at the Naval Supply Facility, Cam Rahn Bay, Vietnam,I never gave much thought to why I was there.
A caring Judge gave me the choice of military service, or jail.
As a 64 year old Grandfather, I can say I made the better decision, although
I'm glad that my Sons did not have to make such a choice.
War is hell, and is usually fought by the young!

I got to know Paul & his family personally in Spain at his second home.
When are we going to understand, nothing is gained by WAR.
There are so many deaths and so much grief all because of different religions.
We are all going to die sooner or later in life. Why make it shorter.
What is gained? NOTHING
