it usually what your listening for is that the compressor makes things louder, i went to school for engineering and it was hard for me to understand compression at first as well.
I have to correct you there. A compressor isn't used to make things ;louder. In fact if a sound comes out louder then putted in, it's used in the wrong way. One important thing to remember about compressors is to keep the volume output the same as the input volume. A compressor is used to make the quiter and louder parts less obvious. And ofcourse it can give some nice effects like coloring the sound etc. Hope this helps.
i hear that...the learning curve on certain compressors are tricky at times...once you get it down....u can't leave them alone! very useful tool for dynamic vocalist!!
